- Officers with the Vancouver Police Department will start wearing body-mounted cameras in what they describe as an effort to boost trust and transparency. But as Michelle Ghoussoub reports, the technology has drawn criticism.

All police officers should be wearing a body cam.
How are Canadian police NOT yet wearing body cameras in 2024??? And $20k was all it took?
Increased safety for the public and for the officers. You should only be worried if you're a criminal or a dirty cop
Dirty cop for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
most are in vancouver
A lot of cops have a reputation for "creativity" when it comes to releasing bodycamera footage...either a lot of audio/video "surgery" or any number of reasons why they flat out refuse to release footage...trust everybody here, but expect the unexpected....
Why is that taking so long?
About time for some accountability for the RCMP
@@AllYouHaveToDoIsBeHonest works both ways but able to establish the truths much easier
@@AllYouHaveToDoIsBeHonest Let the chips fall where they may, would of liked to see this transparency when the shooting went on in Nova Scotia that implemented the hand gun ban
A decade late
This should not be a pilot project. They should all have them on, at all times. They should not be allowed to mute them either.
They cant. The only time the audio is muted is when its first turned on. It records all the time and when you turn it on saves 30 seconds before. Those 30 seconds dont have audio.
The cops probably have the ability to edit the footage.
Long overdue
vpd cant afford $20,000 for cameras?????
They can't, but they also can't afford the investigations and lawsuits against VPD officers.
per officer, i guess
will be any of the VPD gangsters held accountable for their criminal actions against Cdn population while wearing the cams?
If course not they just have proof they can show their buddies now
About damn time
Body Cams should be Mandatory for ALL Police in Canada. In fact, they should have been in place years ago. They have been proven "more than just useful" in MANY prosecutions throughout the USA. They have also been useful against the Police when the popo gets a little too violent unnecessarily.
The cost to the public of having police without body cams is much higher than the cost of the equipment. In fact, considering it's 2023 it's time ALL of Canadian Police should be wearing these devices and have a Federal Policy regarding their use.
It was just never turned on.. lol
It is always better to have the cameras.
I am definitely not a police lover but...
the Vancouver police are the right type of police.
They are actually human beings ( yes, I got a few tickets btw ), the people you want to have around.
May God bless them.
It can't reduce use of force and civilian compliance because reduced civilian compliance leads to higher use of force
ABOUT TIME !!!
Can a citizen request the camera be turned on?
Damn good idea!
How is this news, the news should have been the VPD have been using them for years?
So far behind the times, time and time again body cams are a vital role of law enforcement.
Why did it take these pork products so long to get these? Bodycams been around for a long time now.
I faced at least 15 vpd in 2007 if cameras were present and the evidence had been accurately presented I may not have been sent out of the holding cells into needle laden streets in jail stockings.!!!🙄 thk goodness I wasn't shot !😊
You only live just once, be excellent to eachother.
the fact it took this long for canada to use body cams is kinda crazy. and instead of spending money on bike lanes and concrete planters get more cams..
I approve. I'm surprised they don't already have them, tbh. And I think it should be a felony to shut them off.
There is no "felony" in Canada. That's American.
about time
Its about time in Canada...how about Manitoba....way past due.
About time
Thought they had been wearing them for years 🤔
FINALLY!
Are they also carrying narcan ?
This, in 2024, a pilot project!? 🙄
Facial recognition systems
…but there is an option to film discreetly
BS Liars!!!!! These cams also have a stealth mode when recording that mutes any audible tones and no lights, but is still recording. They’re already lying so be aware.
Which is set by department administration an only on certain axon body cams
@@Chumpy_1 Wrong kid.
@ You can look it up my man lmao. Takes two seconds to look on their website.
@@Chumpy_1 Learn how to spell ‘two’ and if you actually believe these liars and what they put out there, then so be it, but I simply know better.
Yeah my bad I was typing fast. I typically believe the company who made the product and I also believe law enforcement.
American police has these for years and Canada just got it?.
Not even, it’s only a “pilot project”.
The public doesn’t have privacy concerns, the officer unions do.
What's the point of the pilot program when you know, almost every other city has been "piloting" for you for almost 10 years.
Always record police in your presence, it is your right as they cannot be trusted. Body cam footage can be redacted .
How long until they start using the excuse they forgot to turn it on or accidentally turned it off? They should be activated automatically at the beginning of a shift to record the entire shift of the officer.
Okay let me know when your workplace starts recording everything you do for your entire shift, and then we can ask these officers to do the same. Thanks.
@@dz-ed8oe iI can let you know that it's already that way. I drive a gantry crane unloading container ships. There isn't a blind spot in the entire Delta Port facility outdoors or indoors. I am under constant camera surveillance in my crane. In fact the only place there is no camera is the bathroom. Even our lunchroom is monitored. The Amazon warehouse which is also under our union membership is also monitored the same way. I'm sure where you pick up your welfare cheque there are cameras too. Feel free to remove your foot from your mouth before replying.
And yet this will bring even less accountability to these corrupt gang members.
They lie a lot. We had a issue years ago and they turned off their cam. it turned out they were playing games with my wife's ex husband. After a investigation they got desk duty for 6 months and I lost all trust in our cities rcmp.
It's ridiculously beyond words how it's a news story in Canada when a police for gets 'some' body cams. The ganster police unions have been fighting this accountability tool for decades. I live in the most dangerous Candian big city, and our srupid police force has a helicopter, but no body or dash cams. O, and we have 3 injuries inflicted by officers in the past 7 days. We also hand write citations....if they never give them.
We need them for dozens of reasons, but a major one is to watch for all they are NOT doing. The milluons of traffic violations they ugnore everyday wheich has resulted in the in us having the worst drivers North America. Drivers her suck because traffic enforcement sucks. Dash cams and body cams would make a huge difference; partly cause they will start doing ALL of their jobs.
about 10 years late!!!
The body cams are no good unless they make it illegal to tamper with them.
