Hi, I´m 63 years old and I can remember steam at Carlisle. I can just about remember going to Silloth by steam with a small saddle tank loco. I used to live in Hartley Avenue near the Kingmoor yard and can remember the noise the coaling tower used to make. I was very young when the marshaling yard at Kingmoor was made and my older sister used to take me to see the ´New Bridge´being made near 14MU where my dad used to work. I can remember train spotting on the Caledonian Bridge and the Waverly line Bridge when steam was on its last legs. We put old copper pennies on the line near the Waverly Bridge and had them squashed flat by big steam engines. Near the Caledonian Bridge there was a turntable and I saw steam locos turned on it to go back into the steam sheds. I can also remember a sort of railwaymans barracks near the steam sheds and the Redfern pub full of railwaymen. Standing on the Cally Bridge when a steam loco passed underneath steam fumes wafted up and I can still remember the smell of steam and oil, there is nothing else like it. I had every Ian & Allen steam loco number book (North West) and crossed them off diligently. We had´nt much money and trainspotting was free so thats what we did, boys and girls hanging out together and talking to each other and having a laugh....no anti-social media in those days. Coming home covered in mud, blood, snot and grass stains and a book with a few more numbers crossed off to a proper home made tea with yer mam and dad. Happy days my friend...😄
My mam lived in Eden Street, Silloth. The back bedroom overlooked the bowling green, station and yards. I remember steam. I also remember jumping waist-deep into the grain as it was being vacuumed into the mill. That was in the days you got walk over the lock gates and nobody ever heard the term health and safety. It was a wonderful time.
Very enjoyable, thank you

I’ve always wondered what it was like back in the day when steam was around
