there's a learning curve with the hand plane, but it is a very satisfying and therapeutic tool
I love it!
Excellent info, fair analysis and very accessible. Thanks!
Michael McDermott thank you so much for commenting, it’s really good to find the videos are useful!
Great video and really useful. Would a hand plane be able to cope with shorter lengths of wood? I’m making frames for my wife’s new painting project which start at 8” and increase. Need to smooth off the frame and sometimes reduce the depth of the wood to accommodate the picture she’s already painted (on hardboard). Would like to use a plane but not sure they’re suitable for short lengths of wood 🤷♂️
For short pieces, it’s all about work holding. I like to use the masking tape and superglue trick to hold pieces down, but yes a plane still works well
Smashing. Ta ever so 👌🏻. Off to a certain auction site to pick up a nice old one 😊
MY English-made 12-204 is one of two or three I seem to pick up the most.
I've never used a belt sander but I'm not sure I could cope with the dust in the garage, plus I can imagine myself being dragged around the room with a belt sander like a cartoon character :)
Chris Franklyn you do find you’re pulling back all the time rather than pushing through.
Useful stuff!
Agree on the electric plane, my was finish not as good AND it was not flat...even when I had the lowest setting...nice vid!
Thank you👍
Great stuff mate. I’ve mainly only used my belt sander to flatten surfaces. I’ve got a no2 hand plane that i restored, but that’s way too small. I’ve been given a Stanley no3, do you think that’ll be good enough once I restore it?
O.G.B Woodwork it will work great! Just slightly narrower so will need more strokes. Certainly more enjoyable than the dust and noise!
King Bespoke Creations perfect! I’ll get it restored sooner than later then.
Great contents !
I wonder which one I should use in my case. I've made a workbench of 2x4 for my diy cnc but after putting the mdf top I reallised It's uneven and I've got some spot with 2mm gap. So which one do you recommend in that case since I've got to shave along the grain for the top horizontal lumbers and accross the grain ( end grain) for the top vertical feet. Thanks
A sharp plane will do both. Don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t plane end grain.
If you find the plane isn’t working for by all means swap to the sanders. But I would always try the quiet clean approach first!
huh,
Now I want to buy a plane
Artur Brzozowski it worked!
Nice video
Thank you! I hope you enjoy more of my videos!
😂😂😂that’s the first plane I got.
Paul Calvert hideous isn’t it!!
King Bespoke Creations I got it when I was a teen. I didn’t know any different.
