Save Your Audio - Removing Drone Noise w/ Jake Sloan

- With drones becoming more and more popular in everything from feature films to content creation, the propeller buzz is something we in the sound world are going to have to deal with. The big question we film sound guys are always asked is "how bad is that sound?" They know the answer just like a toddler knows how bad something smells when they want you to smell it but it still happens often. In this video we're going to look at a few options and see if there's anything we can use to dial out the drone sound and preserve our audio.

YESSSSSSS!!! This was so much fun to be part of and frankly I'm amazed how well you were able to make the drone noise disappear
Thanks for participating in this with me. Really makes me miss Alaska. Next time we Collab I think I absolutely must go there to talk in a studio about footage.
@@SoundSpeeds YES lets make that happen!! we can discuss some on location sound in the wild recording sound too!
Hmmm... Record sound somewhere where there's nothing to make noise? Count me in!
1:34! :) Two of my favorite dudes, Nice!
Yes sir.
removing noise using the spectrogram it’s an art itself. i’ve discovered recently acoustica7 and it’s quite impressed on their spectrogram too.
Yes indeed. I'm not talented enough to do that but I've seen it done in really cool ways like boosting nearly inaudible sounds to full volume then dropping everything around it. Really amazing stuff.
there is a lot of electromagnetic science into it. thanks for making this simple to understand
Sure thing. Thanks for watching.
5:26 Jake is always pushing buttons! 😉
Great video, Allen and Jake!
And yes, Allen, you're good at imitating drone noises.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
@@SoundSpeeds 🤣
😉
When you said "Sound Advice" at the end, I heard your drone noises... 😋
Amazing what one can do to stop unwanted waves.
And isolating them. Totally. These plugins are amazing.
This is so cool thanks for this
Sure thing! Thanks for watching.
ReaFir is my go to for quick and dirty stuff. I get best results when playing with mix knob after removing noise. Good balance between artifacting and suppressing background noise. You could even run couple lighter instances instead of one aggressive one.
But man… I might need to get that waves vx.
I use ReaFir still at my desk followed by NS1 to knock out subtle artifacts. Works great.
Keep this up and you’ll put the adr shops out of business 😂
Not with Marvel and other huge shows still doing everything they can to get the visuals they want.
iZotope RX should have been able to do a little better job with more time. I just tried RX on some dialogue and it was almost able to totally eliminate traffic noise from an outdoor shoot with very minimal impact in sound quality. However the traffic was off axis, which really makes me wonder what RX could have done if the drone was above/behind camera.
If you are interested in some samples let me know.
I appreciate it but I'll pass.
This reminds me of how I remove my wife's voice from my head when I'm watching football. I only have a few seconds after the 1st word to remove her voice from what I hear from the TV so I can continue to watch in peace.
Wife tone. The standard issue man filtering autoprocess. I also have an impressive daughter filter that many would envy.
I have two newbie questions 1. Can noise cancellation be used at the source. i.e could a mic placed on the drone be used to cancel out the waveform created by the drone itself. 2. Will AI yield quicker results going forward?
1: I'd rather process on post to make sure settings are the way they should be. You may be able to though.
2: It probably will in time but results aren't great now
Can you cancel out the drone noise when the mic is mounted on the drone?
That's overly ambitious. Not at this time.
I've been using clarity with much success. (Over RX) The newer AI stuff are definitely better at preserving dialogue.
I wonder if they tweaked the algorithms in RX 10.
Just a minor correction: Audacity is not technically freeware nor open source, it's a Free Software (as in freedom, GPL3 licence), which is also free of charge.
Thanks.
FOSS!
👍
I can't remember what it was I think it was a commercial maybe a show in it there was a short segment of a person operating a drone flying right to left behind the operator by about 3 feet. And it was dead silent! Can't remember if there was dialogue I don't think there was but I was thinking no way is that real.
If there was no dialogue, very easy to replace
The microphone is not moving though so I would think it’s much easier to remove the sound.
Yeah, as long as the mic is picking up a constant sound, it'll be easier to remove.
