The small piece below the strings is called a tug bar and it’s from early days with assumption strumming was with the thumb. It’s been relocated on some models above the strings as a rest for the thumb as playing bass evolved to more finger playing…I think😂

The black ledge is a rest for your fingers for when you use your thumb to play. It was common on early fenders because they thought that is how most people would play an electric bass. I just learned that last week and have been playing bass for over 15 years lol.

Some albums that got me into playing bass as a guitarist were Interpol's "Turn on the Bright Lights" and Joy Divisions "Unknown Pleasures." They both have amaziong melodic bass riffs, and they're fun to play. The standout songs are "The NEw" on TOTBLand "Dissorder" on UP.

That's a cool bass. The black bar is there because Leo assumed people would play bass with their thumb and rest their fingers there. I like short scale basses, they're fun to play. My favorite short scale from Fender is the basic Player Mustang P/J in natural. The one you got is a little higher up the totem pole. You should get a bass amp, though. It does make a difference. Even just a Fender Rumble 40. Ask me questions, I have 36 years of experience with the big toddler-stringed instruments.

I knew that there was such a thing as a Mustang bass… but I had no idea they so much smaller. It looks awesome! Some folks don’t like the racing stripe. I really do.
But I don’t get the “burgundy” thing at all though. LOL

I bought this bass over the Fender JMJ Mustang. The JMJ is great, but the Vintera II just felt better, and I liked the bridge better. Very good bass.

It's handy to be able to play bass as well as guitar. I was able to pick up gigs when my friends needed someone who could play many instruments. You can also track lots of things. Guitar, bass, mandolins, vocals etc. Pretty much all you'll need is a drummer or a way to create a percussion track(s). As far as where to rest your hand... the top of the bass. put your thumb there and strike the bass strings with your index, middle and sometimes ring fingers. Occassionally you can slap.

As was said before, the small black plastic bar is called a tug bar. It was used when Fender thought players would use their thumb to play.
Think about a bass amp, for better sound. For all around weight, price and sound, it's hard to beat the the Rumble 40 combo. Take that Mustang Bass to your music store and plug it into one. Set the tone controls to 10, 2, 2, 10 o'clock (BASS, LOW MID, HI MID & TREBLE), this is true flat, NOT all controls at 12 o'clock. Ensure the Bright, Contour, Vintage and Overdrive buttons are out and tune to taste from there. It also has DI out if you want to record or run it to a sound board.
I think you'll love it. Compliments my AC15 and Brown Princeton very nicely. Plays great in acoustic sets. Can hold it's own, if not pushed close to it's limit with mild to modest electric sets.

I would like to try a Bass VI. I have played a bass, now I mainly play acoustic guitar. I would like to see what happens the two worlds meet in one instrument. Go ahead and rock on both. Bass made me a better rythm guitar player. Guitar made me not afraid to go above the 12th fret and play the bass in more melodic way. Playing the piano made me learn harmony and theory and that I can hear and see where every instrument lies in a frequency spectrum. Playing drums helped me to stay in time and to have fun making music. I wish to every person who sings or/and plays instruments to be a musician. Voice and guitar are just tools that project our music to audience.

Landon, don't be shy to play bass with a pick, if that's what feels more comfortable and natural to you! 😉👍
I'm more a bassist than guitarist but have always felt way more comfortable playing bass with a pick myself, and I play fingerstyle only about 20% of the time 🙂
And man, it took me a moment before it clicked with me that one bassline was from R.Stewart's 'Maggie M.'! I was already getting nervous: "I so know this! But what is it?!" 😅
And funny, I'd mentioned 'Fraggle Rock' in a message to a friend only yesterday! 😄
Oh, and whoever composed the music behind the dismantle segment of this video has heard 'August 10' by Khruangbin 😄

Hi Landon, my son, has a music degree and is a bassist. He plays and teaches electric, double and fretless bass.
He says your technique is dreadful 😅. You look like a guitar player. That said, when he plays my guitar, he looks like a bass player. 😂
Throw that pick away and use your index and middle finger.
As for that thing under the high string, he has no idea what its for either, bit his are jazz basses.
He rests his thumb on the top of the pickup.
He says the good thing about a bass is you don't have to deal with those high B&E strings.
    Enjoy - Rod

My only choice was Squier, a non-Fender brand short scale, or regular scale. I love the bass I ended up going with (a Nate Mendel signature, MIM) but I every time I see these new short scales I get GASy, despite being terrible at bass. Thanks for that, Landon.🥲
