    Thank you for the video. I bought this camera the week it was released and have been very happy with it. I'm surprised to how little recognition this camera has received on youtube. It is a small, light, and cheap DSLR with almost no compromises. I use it professionally and it never disappoints. I also own a 40D, but this has become my main camera.

    I'm a beginner and I don't know which camera to choose. I narrowed my chooses down to the Canon SL1 and the Canon T3i. I mainly intend to take shots of friends and some landscape shots. Which do you think would be a better camera suited for myself? Or is there a better camera more suited for me? Thank you enjoyed your review.

      Lil Savage Thanks for the kind words. If you hold both in your hands you'll know which is right for you. Both are equally well suited for a wide variety of photo opportunities. There are lots of choices, particularly if you're looking for small/light - in addition the Canon G7X (much smaller) ua-cam.com/video/_KvXlzXRivw/v-deo.html - there are similar cameras from most name brands (Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Fuji ...) Check out my channel for some other reviews, I tend to concentrate on cameras in this class.

      Thanks for the appreciative comment. Don't overlook auto mode as one of its best capabilities - it's not a mistake to use it as long as it produces the photo you want. You only need the other modes when you want to do something different than the camera expects.

      It is my pleasure. First, set as many things - ISO, shutter speed and aperture in manual, (M mode) using the on screen meter in multi mode to get within a stop or so of 0. Shoot in JPEG ( for faster burst). If the distance is predictable, manual focus. If you are comfortable use the histogram, let the sky get close to 100%. Use auto hdr. Then shoot in burst mode, remembering to lead the subject. I'd use the viewfinder, with one eye to spot the eagles, the other to compose the shot in the viewfinder.

      Maarten Heilbron Could you comment on the kit lens. Sometimes a kit lens is poor quality and returns poor photo quality. And sometimes the lens is quite good etc. Where does the kit lens stand?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron 7 років тому

      It's a suitable lens, but not an outstanding lens - you get what you pay for. Pricier lenses are nearly always better, and there are lots of reasons to upgrade, or add. You might like a longer zoom, or a wider angle. You might want a wider aperture or a constant aperture throughout the focal lengths. Canon makes some excellent lenses (L series with the red ring) that are superior to the kit.

    Hi Martin..thank you for sharing. I've purchased this Canon with white body. The SLR came with the 55/88 lense and a 75/300 lense. I have tested the 75/300 for my landscapes and I get an awful, overexposed shot. Can you suggest anything? My Nikon SLR does not do this so I am baffled. I wanted a smaller SLR. Liz Douglas If you are not getting over-exposed shots with the other lens, it may be faulty. If you are getting over-exposed shots with both you may need to check the settings. Is it only landscapes that are overexposed? Are you shooting in auto or manual? Try the other. Good luck.

    Your videos are really well made. Thanks for this review. I do like Canon's functionality and menu system, the touchscreen and the variety of lenses. I also know that it takes experience to shoot good pictures at the right exposure. Having said that I guess I was using my 60D as a very heavy point and shoot most of the time, but I got exceptional pictures doing that. The photos you took with the Sony A6000 seemed livlier and crisper and more colourful, though I know the lighting and settings were different. Thanks again!

    I have tried 3 different cameras. I have owned the EOS Rebel XTi for 8 years. Just recently I purchased the Sony a6000. I love the small body, do not care for the difficult programs needed to remove photos using Sony programming. I am looking at exchanging the Sony for the Canon SL1. Your video has helped me decide that this is going to happen now. I would love to share some of my photos with you, if you are interested. Do you have a facebook or can I share through google +?
    Thank you for the video, and for helping me "seal the deal" so to speak!!!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron 9 років тому

      Kelsey Mathis Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate that.
      "difficult programs to remove photos"? I don't understand. If you don't like the workflow or interface of the Sony desktop photo app that comes with the camera, use another one like Photoshop, Lightroom, or one of dozens of others that suits your style.
      My computer has a SD card slot, I copy the files (from any/every camera) to my backup drive and then import them into whatever software. I don't find Sony's files are any different from any other camera. In my mind, that's a very bad reason to ditch the A6000. On the other hand, if you prefer the look and feel of the SL1 over the A6000, or if you have/prefer Canon lenses that's a different issue.
      Please share through Google Plus, or DM your flickr details.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron 8 років тому

      +iujj012 Check out Canon's web site in your country, maybe. I'd try with the 70-300 before I give up on it, just to see if you can work with it. The non-IS issue just means that you'll need a faster shutter speed and/or a higher ISO. Unless there's a one time only (your daughter's playoff finals soccer match) I'd take it to a few sporting events and try it out. Even if it's not working for you, at least you have a basis for comparison and understanding why you need to spend more. A more expensive zoom will get you IS, a smaller (and constant) aperture and better glass.

    I'm so confused at what I am gong to get. I was thinking either getting the Sony RX100 Mark 2 (I know it's a point and shoot, but heard and saw works really good! EMAlife Both are good choices - with the SL1 you get a bigger sensor and the ability to change lenses. That's not really enough information to make a fully informed decision, but yes, it's perfectly suitable for that. I'm confused between the Canon 100d and the Nikon d3300. it'd be great if you could help me out!

      I didn't review the D3300 - but I'm sure both are fine entry level cameras. Choose with your wallet, your hand (which is easier to hold) and your heart. By heart I mean the one you'd be proud to own and would never leave at home.

      DemiGabourel The SL1 does not have wifi, so no ... unless you have a wifi enabled SD card (like eyefi).

    I really like this camera, but I'm not shore if the grip would fit my hand. Anyone else with big hands have this camera?☺

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron 8 років тому

      My hands aren't exactly big - but I do prefer the size of the 50/60/70/80D series over the Rebel-sized models.

      Thank you ☺. I actually held a canon 80d before so that gives a pretty good base to work off of.
