YES!!! I love this video. The key to swimming is not going from point A to B but rather learning how to be present in the water and have fun. Building confidence and then learning the mechanics.
Thank you! Finally almost 30 years I found a video that makes sense. We non-swimmers or those that fear swimming never think human body has buoyancy and the body is pushed to the surface. I will try your tricks and I feel good already. I will let my head go underwater, come out, breath tread water that way in a shallow area first. I can see where this is going.
The best video for new swimmers like me. I can swimm but never tried in deep water. If i had a chance to take 1 h lesson from this guy i would have no problem anywhere.
I used to get so nervous and could barely tread water for a minute the most. I was surprised that I was able to tread water for more than 3 minutes after trying what's shown here. Thank you so much.
Found my vertical bouyancy today in the beach. I always freak out when I cannot reach the sand anymore. But today was different. Big thanks to this video! 👍🏾
Many thanks for this video. MY treading is too exhausting and active. I shall start by perfecting this passive form of treading first and then build from there. I wish that I had seen your video sooner. Thank you for these super important tips and techniques.
Everyone's going on about how we don't all have the same bouyancy, I feel that's beside the fact. I like this video because getting comfortable with your buoyancy, whatever it is, is the key to being relaxed in the water. I'm desperate to learn to be comfortable in the deep, and no teacher i've had has addressed these techniques.
A good video, one of the best I've seen so congrats. I already know how to tread but it's really great to see a video focusing on minimal effort by making use of natural buoyancy. Exactly how I teach. Breathing is everything, it doesn't state it in this video but the more air you hold in your lungs the more likely or faster you will float to the surface.
This was a great demonstration. I recently took a swimming refresher as an adult and the instructor started us off in a 9ft area and just worked on breathing and vertical buoyancy. He said that everyone will float back to the top and then glanced at me before adding...except this guy. He'll come back up eventually...hopefully. lol. I have a very low body fat. Many of the women let go of the wall and their heads were above the water without having to do anything. A few muscular guys bobbed for a sec but didn't go that far down. The guy next to me sank rapidly so myself and the guy on the other side reached down and pulled him up. He was tense and essentially pushing the water up instead of down. He tried again next to the ladder for support and felt safe enough to relax and was able to float. I then let go of the side and sank about a foot before slowly coming back up but only my goggles broke the surface before leveling out just below it. We were confident afterwards but I wish that we'd learned more about playing with position/surface area like this.
The best video that I have ever found. I have been swimming for years and I can dive in deep water but I can’t tread and I have been comfortable but you really made it easy. You gave some light in understanding the physics behind the buoyancy..Great job man .
This is such a great demo. I'm an adult learning how to swim and tread, and I have watched almost every single video on treading but I really enjoyed watching this one, especially how easily you're able to move from floating your front to your back by calmly letting your head lead without much movement. The other video focused on sculling is great too, I've had it explained to me and I've watched a ton of videos but still not quite getting what I'm doing wrong until I watched that video. Ready to try these techniques in the pool.
I don't think I ever realized I never sink past the top of my head, this is good information for when I try again. I know the motions of the freestyle and breaststroke but I never learned the basics and have had to learn everything myself.
I discovered something like this on my own but not quite vertical as he does it but I am inspired. I realised one day that my limbs were actually sinking me in the water but if just stopped using them buoyancy took over. Then I learned to use limb movements that help not sink. But to stay buoyant like this you have to slow your heart beat and practice breathing techniques similar to free divers but not quite all the way to hyperventilating. I could almost sleep in the pool.
I was learning my friend how to float in water and she was delighted about hardness of sinking, she was thinking that her body acts like a rock, so this video can be really helpful for begginers, because it shows how we act in water :)
The key point is to stay relax and calm when performing the vertical bouyancy. It won't work if you are anxious and tense. The bad part is our nose is still submerge in the water, that is when we apply the sculling and kicking to bring our nose above the water.
that's right. water line for most people is at their forehead. I taught my friends this buoyancy. they have to wear goggles when learning this because it doesn't help at all when you can't see clearly underwater it will make you tensed. and better try this at not very deep part of the pool just beside the wall. it will greatly calm you if you bring a friend with you when learning this just in case
This is a very good video. Especially for beginners and people who learn on their own, like me. I had to figure out all of this on my own (after casting out all the fear demons, of course). Thanks. Keep'em comin'!
@@mistervova11 I can float like that no problem just wearing a regular bathing suit. If the water was calm, the only thing that might cause me to drown would be hypothermia. I can tread water indefinitely because I don't need to move my arms or legs to stay afloat. It has to do with body composition. Most people are buoyant, but I think this video is misleading because some people are much less buoyant than others and wouldn't be anywhere near the surface once they found their equilibrium.

Hi Swimmers! We've posted another treading water video - all about sculling (using the hands/arms) to create lift and controlling your body in the water. Sorry for the long wait!
It's because I'm not trying to keep my head out of the water. Some people can actually float with their face clear of the water without needing their arms. Depends on buoyancy and lung size, usually.
I used to swim alot as a kid with no issues, after puberty I gained weight for rugby. Now I'm 6'2 ~210lbs and sink like a rock, even when I hold a large breath
Tried this multiple times in the pool at the deep end. I always sink all the way to the bottom of the pool. Tried with full breath of air and being very relaxed. Even then, I slowly go to the bottom. With normal amount of air in the lungs, I sink much faster. Tried being horizontal and that is slightly better than vertical, but the water level is still way above my head. Feels like I am truly negative buoyant. Any advice for increasing your buoyancy? I struggle in freestyle because of this but find breaststroke easier.
If you try floating in a vertical position, keep in mind that "floating" might mean that your face is submerged, and perhaps just the top of your head is at or above the surface. It's very rare to be so negatively buoyant while at the surface and with full lungs. Do you know your lung volume? Another way to test this: take a full lungful of air in about 4 feet of water, and lie on the bottom. Do nothing. Do not exhale a thing. Do you float up all the way, a bit or not at all. Another question: can you float on your back and kick gently? Does that work for you?
I'm exactly the same... Even taking a full breath if I lay at the bottom of the swimming pool I don't float at all. I just can float on my back if I move my legs and arms. if I do it lightly I sink immediately. I lay on the bottom of the swimming pool even if I'm holding a noodle.
@@s1vinicius I am the same. I love to scare the life guards by laying on the bottom of the pool for long periods. I can stay on the bottom about 3 minutes before having to come up for air. Styrofoam stomach SwimFree just does not get it. He ASSumes everyone is as boyant as he is. WRONG.
ya its easy when you float and half your face is out of the water. on a full deep breath I float with my eyes and and forehead under water. Only the tip top of my head is out. is there anything I can do to fix this? apart from buying stuff to make me float.

I'm trying hard to do that vertical bouyancy drill, I sink all the way down every time. Should I keep the lungs filled up, or what do you think I'm doing wrong? Thanks a lot!!
The kind of mental calmness you are showing in deep water, is very difficult to acheive unless we are sure that we will float, which does come very late.
One question. Are you maintaining air in your lungs fully. I seem to have to take a deeper breath than just a normal breath. I like the way you are so relaxed. I did it fairly well with a deeper breath. Better than I ever have. I love the water now and don't fear the deepens of the pool without worrying where the wall is!! Thanks. I want to be able to do the same in a lake. Great video!
you don't need to take in air fully. it will hurt your chest in the water. and you can exhale a bit of air in the water too. you don't need to keep all the air in the chest.
How are you floating with your head pressing up while your hips are down.you made it look easy. My hips damn near have to be touching the surface to stay afloat but you can somehow keep your head above water at a 45 degree angle without using your legs.
*tries to sense vertical buoyancy...sinks* I'm terrified of water and I plan to join the marines and one of the tests is to tread water... idk for how long but I know I'll b the first to sink
Hi +Oodles. Try in chest deep water and start underwater with a comfortable but full lungful of air. You'll probably float with your eyes underwater, but wait until you stop bobbing up and down, maybe 5-10 seconds. Feel free to hold onto the wall. Get comfortable with your face partially submerged (depending on your lung volume and body density). Then tilt your head back while keeping your ears in the water. Let me know how it goes. More videos coming soon - we had a really busy summer!
they let you blow up your blouse for the tread part if you want and you can literrally float like that forever you just blow all your air in your blouse and youll button the very top button and hold it tight to your neck while blowing air. all you need to know is how to swim ive been in for about 2 years and im just now trying to become a better swimmer you'll be fine trust me as long as your a little comfortable in the water and you dont panic you'll be good to go.
Start in shoulder deep water, hold on to the edge. Hold your breath with comfortably full lungs and let yourself sink for 5 seconds. If you have lots of muscle, you'll probably sink past your eyes and just the top of your head will be above the surface, maybe only slightly. This is still floating! Try it with a little less air in your lungs and note the difference in buoyancy. Keep doing this until you can float vertically for 10-15 seconds (don't go any longer, or you'll be too tense at the start and for safety). Learn how to float in a vertical position first. Then try to float on your back, again, in shallow water, with your ears underwater (crucial) and the water up to the edge/corner of your goggles. Otherwise, you'll be lifting your head much too high and it will sink your body underwater.
Also, a key thing to mention: think of this like learning a new language. If you can go to a pool for 15-20 minutes each day, in chest deep water, and learn how your own buoyancy works (it's a bit different for each person), that will help way more than trying to do it in a longer session 1-2x per week. I hope you have that option!
This was super helpful! Tried this today and I managed to float longer than 3 min for the first time! My head would come up and down the water surface but it was enough to catch my breath. If I try just "standing" up straight i'd be submerged just above my eyes. With some light sculling I can raise my head to breathe. I did it without moving my feet and had my knees up to my hips. I was rotating though when i was doing it, any tips to keep that from happening? Can't thank you enough for this pal! Keep 'em coming
I can float fine...my problem is the kicking and hands movement...I can swim for a few seconds and bec my form isn’t good I get tired. The side breathing is hard to do. I need to learn that too ugh
the calmness he has in the water and the music makes you already feel comfortable before even going to learn swimming.. very nice.. :)
i know! I always feel that way when i watch this video, but a whole other story once i get in the water!

How are you floating with your head pressing up while your hips are down.you made it look easy. My hips damn near have to be touching the surface to stay afloat but you can somehow keep your head above water at a 45 degree angle without using your legs.
THE EaSIEST way to explain the secret on hoe to tread in water
thank you..
thanks i needed this
So , its your head that make u float and sink? If u put your head down , you sink and when u put you head up , u float
You've got it. The head weighs 5 kg or so I think?
no... its the opposite.. you put your head down, your legs will start floating...
On your back yes, on your front its opposite
*tries to sense vertical buoyancy...sinks*
I'm terrified of water and I plan to join the marines and one of the tests is to tread water... idk for how long but I know I'll b the first to sink
Thanks guys for the helps and tips, I just hope I don't f up in the marines
So are u holding your breath when u go under or exhaling
I love this song.
I wish I was that relaxed in the water 😩
This was super helpful! Tried this today and I managed to float longer than 3 min for the first time! My head would come up and down the water surface but it was enough to catch my breath.
If I try just "standing" up straight i'd be submerged just above my eyes. With some light sculling I can raise my head to breathe.
I did it without moving my feet and had my knees up to my hips. I was rotating though when i was doing it, any tips to keep that from happening? Can't thank you enough for this pal! Keep 'em coming
Awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Awesome
New subscriber here! Great informative video. Any tips about treading with your arms above your head?
I can float fine...my problem is the kicking and hands movement...I can swim for a few seconds and bec my form isn’t good I get tired. The side breathing is hard to do. I need to learn that too ugh
ivi122 This is exactly where I am.
very helpful, thanks!
Does buoyancy of a person depends on body weight?
Anuj Arya Yeah it does.
The music on this video is great..any idea what the title is?
Woww look easy..but when do it..too nervous on deep water..
Great video
