      While consideration to the environment should be paid, and hopefully these territorial disputes will be better resolved, who knows what could be hidden under the ice? We're talking about an area more than half the size of North America that's gone mostly untouched by human hands. Maybe the miners will find some archaeological treasure, another meteorite with signs of life on it, or a cure for cancer in some previously undiscovered mineral.

    The "leave nothing behind" rule also applies to tourists, who are told when they take a trip off their cruise ship to go walk on the icy land that they are not to leave anything, not even hair. Apparently cruise ship companies can be very alert to tourists traveling with other companies just in case they break that rule so one company can be taken out of the tourist running. I got this info from a friend of my mum's who took a cruise that stopped off at the Antarctican peninsula.

    • @Treviisolion

      +JustinBobcat Well every country that would have the power to mine there. If Antarctica were to become completely claimed and then everyone who owned the claims renew the mining part of the deal, then if another country like Brazil decided they wanted to mine there, because they hadn't signed the treaty, as long as the treaty didn't require the countries that signed to give up their claims, Brazil would have to go through those countries who have claims first.
      Now if everyone but say the UK were to sign the treaty then all the countries that signed wouldn't be able to mine, but the UK could mine, at least in the land that they claimed was theirs (and if they wished to prevent international tension, only the land that everyone else agreed was theirs and wasn't claimed by someone else).

    • @rondowar
      @rondowar 9 років тому +2

      +JustinBobcat everyone who's part of the treaty has to agree to the treaty
      those who agree to the treaty might enforce the rules from that treaty, if that is part of the treaty
      since I don't know the exact wording of the treaty and can't be bothered to read the thing, I'd say this is the safe answer:
      if enough major forces agree to the no mining thing then there will be no mining there for however long they agree on
      and I'd be surprised if they go promining, as that will get a LOT of border disputes, which could end up in tempers, which could end up in war, which could end up with a nuked away earth, which none of the countries (apart from north-korea maybe :P) want

    I've always found the territorial claims over Antartica fascinating. So many overlapping claims. Sovereignty is a curious problem for the world's only (mostly) unhabited continent. I suspect that one day space colonization will pose similar thorny issues like this.

    I feel like a war over Antarctica would inevitably bring conflict onto the landmass, but that would in-turn lead to the destruction of part of (if not the entirety of) the resources which would be fought over. Seems like the perfect battleground to model human conflict.

      Lawrence Clarkson The only reason there's warning on mechanical equipment is that it makes sure nobody can sue you for damage.

    • @velikiradojica

      Lawrence Clarkson I don't read them, so I couldn't care less.

    • @aundalius1
      @aundalius1 9 років тому +12

      +Lawrence Clarkson While I don't actively mock them, I think they're childish. It's no one else's responsibility to pander to a minorities issues. I don't see paraplegics demanding to be carried up stairs, they find an alternate route/ramp and leave everyone else well alone. Certainly, those ramps are mostly mandated, but that's hardly as intrusive as the intent of "trigger warnings"(to silence discussion on a matter someone finds disturbing).
      If the content isn't ideal for this person's consumption, perhaps they should read something else instead of expecting the world to revolve around them. It seems like it's a cry for attention more than anything else...
      Warnings are for the operator, what you're referring to ("Stop this or i'll have a breakdown") is a threat that children make. You know what, computers should have mandated warning labels just like even the most innocent TV shows do now a days, "User discretion is advised". That puts the responsibility solely on the user, where it ought to be.
