I did that. 2. I *think* everyone is using these coverplates wrong. What I do when opening the Powerlock to access the inner tools is the following: Grab the handle in which the required tool is. With your other hand grab the coverplate of the !!same!! handle. Pull. The pliers will then slide through the hole in the plates and you can access the inner tools. No extra step needed. The file and the scissors are pretty bad though, but having sth bad is better than to have nothing at all.
Thank you for the detailed information. It’s nice to have on opinion from someone with experience using this multi tool on a regular basis. I think the things I pointed out, it does very well. I just wish the remainder of the tools were as good.
I think you missed a few things about this tool. 1. The 1/4 inch driver is mostly for using regular 1/4inch extensions and 1/4inch screw driver adapters. This make this tool extremely versatile in what it can do. It can also lock in the 90 degree to get more leverage or to get into tight places. Most people use it for screw drivers just like the Centerdrive or the Leatherman. 2. Even though the pliers open to where the handles are uncomfortably positioned the extra power this plier has I think makes it more easy to hold bolts as you explained even when the handles are open wider. Also when you are in this position with a large item SOG's allow you to reverse the handle grip so you can grab things that are larger. No other tool that I know of can do that. 3. The knife blade is easily fixed by just ordering a plain edge blade and installing it. 4. If you need wire stripping they have an accessory you can install or just buy a V-Cutter. It strips wire well. 5. The Phillip Screwdriver is weaker for sure as you said but it is ground very well and works better than any Phillips screwdriver I have used on a Multitool. If you need to crank on a screwdriver then that is what the 1/4inch driver is for. I am a data center tech and the SOG Phillips is one of the reasons I carry one over other tools. They are precise for hard drives and computer components. The 1/4inch driver is how I get more reach and use Wiha bits when I need. In conclusion I think the SOG Power Assist and the Power Lock are top tier tools. Even today. If SOG would just update these tools as they are now. They would be awesome. I've been happy with a black oxide Power Lock, it's older US-made without the tooth shroud. I can't fault anything on it except the covers are an additional operational step. I've not had any of the negatives people describe and I've used mine for quite a few years, I've never broken a multitool either. I just never used an MT as a substitute standard and never expect it to be one, that would be setting any universal MT up for failure. I'm looking at the SOG PowerPint to keep in a minimalist cycling tool kit. Thank you for your honest review !
One thing many don't know is that SOG comes from the MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command - Studies and Observations Group (or as some called them Special Operations Group) units in Vietnam in the mid-1960s or so. The MACV-SOG units carried out mostly covert operations during the Vietnam Conflict. I have had the SOG Powerlock for over 20 years and have never had a problem with it, I am looking to replace my combo knife blade with the plain straight-edge. I knew when I bought this MT that I could order replacements from SOG. I know that a company in New Hampshire used to make parts for SOG as I saw them when I worked in the company's Littleton, New Hampshire plant, in the early 2000s.
I just found one of the SOG folding shovel/pick/saw tools. It is new and was laying out in the desert where the owner left it. I can see why. It's a piece of crap wonder if these are any less crappy.
I used to have a Powerlock. The highlights and lowlights are similar for me too. The deathnail for the MT and SOG as a whole is the warranty, limited as it is. To replace a damaged tool they wanted me to buy a replacement. Being used to the Leatherman warranty all other pales.
My experience so far has been different. I have a set of power-lock V cutters for 10 years or so and I broke the locking mechanism using the file as a prybar. I called SOG, told them exactly what happened, and they said to send it and they will take care of it. UPDATE - they are sending me a wholes new tool. As far as replacing tools, they do have tools you can purchase if you want to, and they are actually pretty reasonable. If you broke a tool it they would probably cover it under warranty based on my experience. I think you would mostly purchase a replacement tool if you want to change out your toolset - which is pretty cool...
Out of the box..i just got mine this xmas. Its actually a little big and heavy for my taste 1st thing. The tool shields. Dont care for those ?i didn't. So they just pop off. Just push on the inside of one side. Off it comes. 2, then take your allen wrench and snug up the allen heads. 2. two hot spots are the sharp corners on the tool locking plates. Sandpaper them down . Its then comfortable. ..
You didn't mention one of the selling points that SOG stresses: it comes from the factory already adjusted to one-handed opening; you don't have to tune it to get that action as is needed with the Leatherman. Another thing is that they make it easy to switch out tools and sell the tools separately. I don't need scissors in my full-sized multi-tools so I substituted the seatbelt cutter for the scissors. The strong points you mentioned are why I carry the PowerLock and the Super Tool daily. The Leatherman is on my dominant side and the SOG on the non-dominant side. The old Leatherman bit holder works fine on the SOG Phillips head. So they are very good together.
@@txtoolcrib I find it very VERY handy to be able to deploy the pliers with one hand since, as often as not, I am already holding the work in one hand before I pull my multi-tool. It takes hours (and hours and hours) of opening and closing, oiling, and loosening the Leatherman pivot points to get to the ease of deployment that comes with the SOG out of the box. Like you, I rate the Leatherman higher overall. They alone really fill the internal space with as much toolage as possible that is also well made. But it really irritates me that I have to work so hard to make the pliers open smoothly, let alone easily, and that they seem to have gone out of their way to make mods hard rather than easy as SOG has.
Been carrying SOG MTs for over a decade. Best in the biz IMHO. Very robust, the covers keep it comfortable when applying lots of force and I have never been in the position were the tool covers extra second of deployment time has been an issue. Great warranty support as well the one time I used it.
Good review, thanks. I like the file on the swiss champ because the nail cleaner at the and of it can also be used as phillips screw driver for small screws.
I like how precise the jaws come together. Its way more precise than the two leathermans i have now and the 7 or 8 that i have owned. Granted leathermans touch for the first few teeth at the tip but flair out as you go back. I really like those.
Excellent review! I have had the SOG Powerlock V Cutter for at least 10 years now. I am not working in the trades as you are so I don’t use mine nearly as much as you do and I find your perspectives extremely helpful. I certainly agree they are not perfect, and you are right on the mark with your comments. One thing you don’t mention is the ability to change tools. You can actually add what looks like a pretty good wire stripper in place of the V cutter, which I’m actually considering doing now. Those handle covers do add a step, but for me it’s not that big a deal. Overall, I have been very happy with them and I think they are a very good value for the money. What I use more than anything are the pliers and the cutters, and I agree they are outstanding. I think with the added wire strippers they will be pretty good for me anyway. Thanks again! Excellent review!
Thanks. I actually sent my SOG Powerlock in for a warranty repair - I broke the corner off of the locking plate using the file as a prybar. As I was doing this (helping someone break into their car they were locked out of) I knew I was asking for trouble and might find out just how good that lifetime warranty is ;-) I spoke with customer service in the warranty department twice. Very nice, very helpful. I was told to send it in and that they would repair it under warranty even though I was very up front about how I broke it. I give them points for this as I think they would have every right to refuse to cover the repair. I was told worst case scenario it would be back to me in 3 weeks (ouch!) but it might be back quicker. In addition to the warranty repair, I have inquired about switching out the blade with a full non-serrated blade and replacing the v-cutter with dedicated wirestrippers. I know we don't often use or need warranty service on our possessions, but I really appreciate superior customer service and warranty coverage and I tend to become very faithful to companies that provide this to me. SOG has an opportunity here to earn future purchases. I will keep you posted...
@@txtoolcrib Quick update on the warranty repair. I called last week and followed up yesterday. Again, they are always very courteous on the phone. I was told Giovanni, the Warranty repair guy, was not in but would be today and would call, which he did this morning. Turns out they could not replace the locking plate on my (original) version of the Power-lock, and rather than replacing the handles, he wanted to know if it was OK to just send me a whole new tool, which is fine with me. I was going to ask about the gear shields anyway, which will be on the new tool. I also asked about a pouch. He offered to send me one. He was very helpful and took a lot of time answering all of my questions. I am going to hold off on switching tools out for now, but on their website there is a detailed set of instructions on how to switch out any of the tools, which take up one slot, which take up two, and some rules on what can go where. So, down the line I can re-configure the tool however I want within those parameters. I have been considering whether I would sell the SOG and switch to the Surge (your favorite), but honestly I think I am going to stick with the SOG and add the hex bit kit. I know that Leatherman is a great product (I have an old Leatherman Sideclip which still works great), and at my age the 25-year warranty is for all practical purposes a lifetime warranty. But at this point SOG has impressed me with their customer service and has earned my loyalty. I again agree the Power-lock is not perfect, but mine has served me well and I am looking forward to getting my updated version replacement tool and putting it to work. Thanks again Ben for your awesome reviews! In the past couple of weeks I think I have watched most of the online reviews of multi-tools, and yours are unquestionably the best out there. Perhaps I will do a review of the Power-lock when I get mine back ;-).
I forgot to say that SOG allows you to purchase equipment for this tool so you can purchase a new knife blade or change out what you do not like. Thank You.
I want to try a SOG multitool. They are the only ones I haven’t yet. Gerber isn’t for me.. big and clunky. Leatherman is fantastic but kinda expensive for the ones I want. SOG seems to be a good middle ground there. Some of the best of both. My only requirement would be having a pocket clip on my next multi tool.. which requires it being smaller and that’s fine. I am however worried about it clacking together with every step. No idea why. Also a good clip is essential not an afterthought style one like the older leathermans. I don’t wanna have $70-120 fall out my pocket haha. Love your reviews. You’re a real user and pretty mellow. All that experience and level headedness make for a killer reviewer. Thanks. 🙏
One thing you missed is the socket adaptor is more meant so that you can use standard sized screwdriver bites. Which is refreshing after dealing with Leatherman scrappy proprietary flat bits that you can't find anywhere. Like if the Leatherman surge or wave had a standard bit holder with some length on it, not as much as say the Gerber drive, but maybe an inch long or so I would have made my mind up already. Like the power access has the same adaptor but also comes with a bit set and socket to insert the bits in and it's a temping option, it's just so big that I am hesitant to get it over the surge or wave. I am damn close to buying the Gerber center drive because FINIALLY someone realized the importance of the driver to these things vs stuff like a file and a can opener that I will probably never use. But I just am not a huge Gerber fan and I am weary of the build quality.
Ben, while I love the great features that you named that set this multitool apart from others (compound leverage, great wire cutters, great crimpers, i like the blade, saw seems good). I have had nothing but grief with this can opener. My "wave" can opener works perfect; my dozens of victorinox swiss army knife can openers all work perfect. For Starters, the SOG can opener is backwards from the victorinox. And, it on the wrong side of the handle. I have moved it twice and it still barely works. It mangles the shape of the can. I have it on the other handle now and the bevel is facing the wrong way-- to make clearance for the pliers to close, but it somehow closes ok. But: get this!!!: I have to use it as a lefthander ( or, if you can picture: I have to set it up on the opposite side of the can. I tried it earlier on a can and it worked but marginally. And, it just tried it now and it failed (I had to finish the cutting with my swisschamp. I noticed the cutting part is not sharp like on my swiss army knives. I think I will try to sharpen it. I thought so highly of this tool when I first got it and set my wave aside for weeks. Then, was utterly miffed when I ran into this prob. With the can opener. It makes me wonder about the engineering dept. at SOG
Tex , I bet the reason the Blade is a combo blade is because of the Environment it is meant for, an Operational most likely Marine (ocean) environment, the best blade to cut Wet Synthetic Line is a Combo blade, most self respecting Salvage Divers/EOD guys use a Combo Blade for their work knife
You should review the SOG Power assist. Its a really nice tool in general. The outside accessible tools are spring loaded. And the pliers are really enjoyable to use
Thanks for the review, Ben. I have mixed feelings for the PowerLock too. Great pliers, great crimper though I never use it, but everything else is sub-par. I hate the handle covers, they are obviously an afterthought. That Phillips is notorious for breaking off.
@@eatmelily Your old sog was made in the USA the new sog multi tools are outsourced to china and with questionable or awful quality control to boot now. Unfortunately as it stands its a gamble to buy any new sog multi tools cause of the lowered quality of materials and overall lacking in fit and finish.
Just got one of these kinda free, I made something someone wanted and it was a onesided trade well in my favour imo, time will tell how much I come to love or hate it but it's nice to finally add a SOG to the collection lol.
I only carry a SOG POWERLOCK B63N EOD. Do not remove the cover. -The powerassist doesn't look symmetrical -You need a dedicated knife anyway like a compact SOG Instinct fixed blade (sheath included). A SOG multitool is Jack of all trades, master of none. The purpose is to supplement your EDC. It's a mission-ready multitool.
I've had my SOG Black nitride EOD since it pretty much came out, Best tool like this I've ever owned....Not sure if they still come with the heavy duty leather case or not, but to be honest, the case is what keeps me from carrying it a lot of time, it just makes it bulky and heavy. If I had a nice corder sleeve, It would be with me every day....... and in the same vein......every Leatherman I've owned has been a dud...
Hey Ben ?? Do you see yourself picking up the SOG power access assist muti tool ? Would love to see a review on that from your channel . I’m guessing you don’t like SOG very much . 🤔
The blade is quite sharp, to have a combination blade it's all chisel ground, a lefty chisel grind. The socket driver can use a bit socket and have a bit kit.
Just a little disclaimer 420 steel isn't the same as 420HC steel. 420HC is a evolution of 420. The 420HC has a higher amount of carbon and 57HRC hardness while 420 is around 50HRC
do you know what is the difference between this and the eod v-cutter? also, know of any other multi tool with a socket driver? i don't know that i've ever seen that before
You're rolling out the reviews, keep them coming because I find them the best on web. Now, to my question. What happens if you're tightening something and it slips off? Are those wire crimpers gonna cause some damage, like the dreaded Leatherman pinch?
That’s a good question. I don’t think it would be a major issue because they are inset a bit and this is a larger multi tool. Because of it’s size, hand placement will be just a bit different in most cases.
Have you seen the Poweraccess? It eliminates the cover problem and puts the tools on the outside. I hate those covers as well because they always catch on the pliers when opening tools. But I don't know if the poweraccess is a good tool.
Another great review 👍 A few comments: - Combo blade (eye roll) - What is the slotted hole on the can & bottle openers for? I’ve seen it on other SOGs. - You’re right about the 1/4” socket adapter. It’s a good idea but not really worth a damn. Unless you want to carry sockets 🤷♂️ - I agree about the edge covers. Sometimes mine inadvertently pop off. I bought my PowerAssist (different SOG model than here) back in 2016. The wire cutters are great. Where I have an issue is it has an overall loose janky feel to it. I adjust it but with use it quickly loosens back up and just doesn’t feel as solid in built quality as most Leatherman products. (You can tell I prefer Leatherman but they’re not perfect) The draw to me for the SOG was the quick access blade but that feels like one of the cheapest aspects of the tool. Also, other than for testing, I’ve never used the V cutter. That was a waste for me. I try to concentrate on implement combinations that I’ll actually use. Or at least just really like for whatever reason. For example, I very rarely use the can opener on multitools but feel more prepared having one on there. The PowerAssist was pretty affordable at around $65 over 3 years ago. After trying it for about three months or so, I started carrying a Rebar & Gerber EAB & put the PowerAssist away. Lastly, I sent it into SOG for warranty service earlier this year. I thought perhaps mine was maybe just off and not assembled as solid as it should have been. SOG’s communication through the process was severely disappointing and the service took months. I was not impressed. Buck, Benchmade, Kai (ZT & Kershaw) and Leatherman all have better warranty service. That’s a consideration in my purchases as to how I’ll be treated after the sale. Ok, that was more than a few passing thoughts. Thanks again for making your videos Ben. Take care.
You’re welcome. I’ve heard more than one person say that the SOG customer service is lacking. I’ve never had to return anything to them myself. Unfortunate to hear.
TX Tool Crib Do you happen to know what the slotted hole on the can and bottle openers is for? Perhaps weight reduction or to save on material/cost? Sorry for the rambling above lol. I geek out on these things
TC1836 I actually do not know the answer to that. It’s something that I’m going to have to investigate. My assumption would be that it is only for weight savings though.
TC1836 Thanks for your opinion! It really answered my question “should I bother with SOG multitools?”. Also, it’s great you included the warranty experience. TBH it’s more important than the price or any other factors (except, of course, the tool quality itself)!
Michał Wow. I’m glad someone got something out of that rant lol. SOGs are not horrible really by any means. It’s just they’re not on the same level as Leatherman. I’d take a SOG over many other multitool I’ve seen - I’d take one especially over having nothing ha ha. I also have to give a shout out to Ben here. His reviews are my favorite. No hype. Just a real guy given his factual observations.
Just picked up one of these. The pliers are amazing. Tools arent very good. Loose and doesnt lock them properly, they feel very thin. Scissors separate when trying to cut anything other then paper. Shame cause those pliers are amazing.
One more quick thought/question: do you have interest in doing flashlight reviews? Not sure if that’s your thing but confident you’d do well with them.
I only use one brand. Fenix. I have considered it, but I’m a bit out of my league because I don’t have enough practical experience with other brands to form an objective opinion. Multi tools and tools I know incredibly well though.
I just don’t need compound leverage in a needle nose plier. The compound leverage thing is very gimmicky and overstated, much like the one handed operation of the Leatherman Free series. The ability to use the drivers with the handle extended out and grasp larger fasteners one handed is so much more important. If SOG, Gerber, Leatherman and Victorinox are the big 4 in multi-tools SOG is definitely AMC, Gerber is Chrysler, Leatherman is GM and Victorinox is Acura. See what I did there?
The compound leverage isn't gimmicky, it's just not for you. I have a powerliter which is the same size as a juice and it has double the clamping force of any multitool pliers in its size. just because it's not useful to you doesn't mean it's a gimmick
Never liked the combo blade. I have a Center drive and i wanna find a Center drive plus the idea is I want the scissors and straight blade together. The original has no scissors but a straight blade the plus has scissors but a combo blade. So when I get the plus I'm making my own plus that has the scissors and straight blade👍
I don't believe that is shielding I'm pretty sure that's there for strength I have one of the older versions that doesn't have that and it broke right there the rivets snapped from the gearing for the compound leverage and now the tool is useless
I Owned The Original SOG Powerlock USA Made... It Was Junk Then (Stupid Tool Covers On Handles)....It's Junk Now!!! Stick With Leatherman!!! The SURGE Is The Best All Around Tool!!!

I'm looking at the SOG PowerPint to keep in a minimalist cycling tool kit. Thank you for your honest review !
I got this for my husband for Christmas. I hope I made the right choice!
Are you still married?
@@jkn2k yes, and I didn't make the right choice. This tool kinda sucks.
Sorry to hear that.
@@cassiealexander1827 god, was joking lol , have a nice day
What does your husband do for a living, maybe I can help you find something more suitable to his needs.
It's a piece of crap
wonder if these are any less crappy.
They are ok? Not great, except for the pliers.
I used to have a Powerlock. The highlights and lowlights are similar for me too. The deathnail for the MT and SOG as a whole is the warranty, limited as it is. To replace a damaged tool they wanted me to buy a replacement. Being used to the Leatherman warranty all other pales.
Wow. I’ve never heard of that. Of course I don’t use SOG much either.
Certainly a fun flipper MT.
You’re right about that point. They do open smoothly.
SwissChamp is just full of useful features.
You’re very welcome, thanks for your comments too. It’s always good to hear somebody else’s perspective.
Thanks. I actually sent my SOG Powerlock in for a warranty repair - I broke the corner off of the locking plate using the file as a prybar. As I was doing this (helping someone break into their car they were locked out of) I knew I was asking for trouble and might find out just how good that lifetime warranty is ;-)
I spoke with customer service in the warranty department twice.
I know just what you mean. Warranty after the sale should not be overlooked.
Perhaps I will do a review of the Power-lock when I get mine back ;-).
tex, try when you wanna hold on to a Half in nut invert the handles it will make a narrow Clamp in your hand
I like my SOG Power assist and Love my Leatherman Charge TTI, I use both but my EDC is the TTI.
I forgot to say that SOG allows you to purchase equipment for this tool so you can purchase a new knife blade or change out what you do not like. Thank You.
That’s a good point, I had forgotten about that.
Good luck with that Gerber 😂
It makes me wonder about the engineering dept. at SOG
Great review! Best I’ve seen so far. It is from 1st hand experience.
If they could make their other tools a good as the pliers, they would have a real winner.
TX Tool Crib from my limited experience with SOG, that’s a big ‘if.’
hmm, mine is about 20 years old, and has not broken, I suppose you could break it, if you really wanted too, lol
About the wire cutters, I've been using my Leatherman Wave to cut rebar tiewire 20-50 times a day for 8 months and there isn't even a knick in it yet.
Just got one of these kinda free, I made something someone wanted and it was a onesided trade well in my favour imo, time will tell how much I come to love or hate it but it's nice to finally add a SOG to the collection lol.
Love multi-tools
Don’t we all?
I only carry a SOG POWERLOCK B63N EOD. Do not remove the cover.
-The powerassist doesn't look symmetrical
-You need a dedicated knife anyway like a compact SOG Instinct fixed blade (sheath included).
A SOG multitool is Jack of all trades, master of none. The purpose is to supplement your EDC.
It's a mission-ready multitool.
I took my covers off since I don’t need to apply as much pressure on the handles as I’d usually do in leathermans👍
Lovely tool right there!
I think some of the tools you take to be larger flathead screwdrivers are meant instead for prying.
Another great review, thanks for posting. 👍🙂
Yes sir.
Just a little disclaimer 420 steel isn't the same as 420HC steel. 420HC is a evolution of 420. The 420HC has a higher amount of carbon and 57HRC hardness while 420 is around 50HRC
do you know what is the difference between this and the eod v-cutter? also, know of any other multi tool with a socket driver? i don't know that i've ever seen that before
Carry 1 Socket size 1/4" magnetize it and you can use 1/4" bits
Good fix!
I have one, will be putting out a review of it later on.
@5:40 I don’t like the way the tools bunch together when pulled out. My Swiss tool opens like butter, but of course I’m not cutting as many wires.
One thing I don’t quite understand is why does the flat screwdriver have chisel geometry? Would it be that expensive to grind it properly?
You wouldn’t think it would be that expensive to do it right.
I got this and swapped the scissors into mine.
(14:50) so true sir. The cls does lose its advantage
Another great review 👍
A few comments:
- Combo blade (eye roll)
- What is the slotted hole on the can & bottle openers for? I’ve seen it on other SOGs.
- You’re right about the 1/4” socket adapter. It’s a good idea but not really worth a damn. Unless you want to carry sockets 🤷♂️
- I agree about the edge covers.
(You can tell I prefer Leatherman but they’re not perfect)
The draw to me for the SOG was the quick access blade but that feels like one of the cheapest aspects of the tool.
TC1836
Thanks for your opinion!
What is your everyday multi tool?
Leatherman Surge
Every multi tool manufacturer needs to consult you before making a product and they’re idiots if they don’t.
My phillips on my sog has been broken off since 2011 lol
One more quick thought/question: do you have interest in doing flashlight reviews? Not sure if that’s your thing but confident you’d do well with them.
I only use one brand. Fenix. I have considered it, but I’m a bit out of my league because I don’t have enough practical experience with other brands to form an objective opinion. Multi tools and tools I know incredibly well though.
TX Tool Crib Fair enough my friend. I have a couple from Fenix and several from Olight (they run frequent sales like one coming up on Halloween)
Cool
Wow really amazing review!!! :D
Thanks.
@@txtoolcrib you're welcome
I just don’t need compound leverage in a needle nose plier. The compound leverage thing is very gimmicky and overstated, much like the one handed operation of the Leatherman Free series. The ability to use the drivers with the handle extended out and grasp larger fasteners one handed is so much more important. If SOG, Gerber, Leatherman and Victorinox are the big 4 in multi-tools SOG is definitely AMC, Gerber is Chrysler, Leatherman is GM and Victorinox is Acura. See what I did there?
Lol. I do.
I agree with you, that’s how I would want it too.
I don't believe that is shielding I'm pretty sure that's there for strength I have one of the older versions that doesn't have that and it broke right there the rivets snapped from the gearing for the compound leverage and now the tool is useless
Two can openers? Missed the bottle cap.
Not an easy carry.
No replaceable cutter.
Knife edge on the inside.
It's not a wrench.
The best multitool on the market imho, even if the tools are so-so, thanks to its great plier
It does have a really good set of pliers.
I Owned The Original SOG Powerlock USA Made... It Was Junk Then (Stupid Tool Covers On Handles)....It's Junk Now!!! Stick With Leatherman!!! The SURGE Is The Best All Around Tool!!!
I would agree that it is lacking in many areas compared to the competition.
me has dado todas las razones para comprar una
Que bueno. Gracias por mirar mi canal. Espero que también te tomes el tiempo de ver algunos de mis otros videos.
Is it just me or does the finish look abysmal compared to leatherman, victorinox and even some Chinese multitools?
The plies are good, the knife sucks
