In my 29 years of active duty Naval Service, I served on 7 different ships, from aircraft carriers to amphibious assault ships. All but one of them are gone from the fleet, this is to be expected with time. Just like many of us Fleet Sailors, our time will come. With that said, we have all made our mark in history which will live on forever. I salute each and every one of you, Thank You for your service. Fair Winds and Following Seas.

I served in USS Ranger for 2 years. I was part of the effort to try and save her.
Basically, I think we need at least 15-17 super carriers. These should be converted back to CVAs (Attack Aircraft Carriers) and smaller carriers to handle the ASW work, as we had when I was in. We need another ship building facility, like Newport News, on the west coast. There's only one dry dock big enough for the carriers - Bremerton, WA. Having only one major ship building company is absolutely absurd, this is exacerbated by Newport News being the only place to build new carriers, to refuel them, and do other maintenance. This whole setup was extremely short sighted by the Navy and the government.

I was a Mustang officer for 24 years, but I have been retired from active duty for 20+ years. I was assigned to four ships and rode several others for various lengths of time including several submarines. Every vessel has since been decommissioned, sold to foreign governments, sold as scrap, or sunk during large-scale training exercises. It breaks my heart to think about all of those great ships & boats that were our homes and beloved vessels for decades being put out to pasture like that.

I served on the Kitty Hawk in the mid-sixties. A bit of trivia...in the movie, "Seven Days in May", a movie about a plot by the Chairman and several members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff t ol overthrow the government, the Counsel to the President is sent somewhere in the Mediterranean to obtain a sworn affidavit from the Commander of the Sixth Fleet as to his role in the plot. The counsel, portrayed by Martin Balsam, arrives at the Admiral's flagship and as he is escorted across the flight deck, you can plainly see the number 63 emblazoned on the superstructure, which is the number of the USS Kity Hawk! At the time this scene was filmed Kitty Hawk was in San Diego undergoing repairs and I was aboard her. I remember watching the scene being shot while standing well out of camera range!

Just mustering the personnel to serve on those ships right now would be a challenge. Then there's the extra complexity of finding ways to train them on non-current technical systems when the ones who used them in the past are no longer around to teach. Younger generations seem to rely on Googling everything at the last second. Nobody seems to have ready knowledge anymore.

I served on the Ranger in 1970-71, I believe it was her 4th West-Pac during the Vietnam War. Years later we tried, unsuccessfully to have her saved as a museum ship but she ended up being towed to Brownsville TX. and scrapped. It would have been nice if at least one Forrestall class Super Carrier could have been saved.

The teaser pix includes Forrestals; CV-61 Ranger, and CV-62 Independence, and Kitty hawks; CV-63 Kitty Hawk, CV-64 constellation. Those 4 carriers were in a pix in 2012 at Bremerton. At this time in 2023 all 4 have been sold for scrapping.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 4 місяці тому +1

All but Kitty Hawk have been entirely scrapped.
Kitty Hawk is probably 65% scrapped at this point. The job will be done by the end of this year... They have saved artifacts and bit and pieces of the hulls and interiors from most if not all these ships. Largest piece of hull saved was the nameplate from the Forrestal. Usually the biggest recycled items are the anchors and anchor chains -- those weigh tons!!! The anchors and anchor chains will go back into active fleet use until they're worn out. The bow anchors for the USS Enterprise/CVN-65 are 67 years old and were both cycled back into the frontline after clean-up and repainting.
A ship's bell was probably saved from all these carriers.

Was on the USS Hayler DD997 from 2000-03. Was a Spruance class destroyer. I’m not as much worried about the size of the navy but more worried about the training needed. It's very difficult for us old salts that served on many different ships and we all bonded not only with the ships but our shipmates as well and it's hard to see the old ones get retired but it's was also retire ourselves. We need a strong navy and well trained sailors to man those ships. 350 is not good enough with all the global bs going on. I'm more in tune with 500 like what president Regan said was needed.

I was an E-2C pilot and served mostly on the USS Kennedy. I also has a few weeks on the Kitty Hawk. Both of those ships are now decommissioned. Last I heard was that the Kennedy was already sold off for scrap which does not sit well with me since I went to war on that ship and have most of my memories of service from that time frame. As for the size of a Navy that we need to properly do the job we are tasked with we will most likely never have enough ships to properly carry out those tasks due to budgets constraints.

I served on a destroyer tender in the 90s. All have been removed from service making it that much harder to repair surface ships overseas. Now ships have to come all the way home to get repaired or we have to pay a shipyard in a foreign country to fix them. A waste of money either way.

I think that some of the month ball fleet should be refitted into backup power stations placed along coastal cities and rivers that are plaged with natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes. By floating these ships that have been refitted up into a dirty dry dock, then after water supply from rivers have been setup, can be filled in with dirt to prevent from sinking. Can supply electricity from each ships original ship board generators. The current fuel tanks can hold long term fuel storage for lengthy power runtime. In addition each ship is already setup with a helo pad that handle air reps and arrival and departure of personal for various reasons. Not withstanding radar and in house medical facilities that can handle small emergencies.
The bigger the cities the more ships. The biggest cities can have non nuclear aircraft carriers that can handle large numbers of helicopter operations simultaneously. Plus having onboard repair shops.

That's actually a rather remarkably good concept. Not sure how practical, safe or realistic it would be to carry out, but at the very least still definitely a fantastic repurposing idea worth exploring. Without a doubt a much better end result for these old girls than a damn scrap yard or some shit. I'd appreciate your idea here no matter what, or where I lived, but considering I currently live (& have lived for most of my life) in coastal areas off of or at least near the eastern seaboard of the US... Virginia, Massachusetts, South Carolina, [especially] on St. Thomas (1 of 3 islands that make up the US Virgin Islands) & [the island of] Puerto Rico (down in the Caribbean), and finally (most of all) all over the southeastern portion of North Carolina... I find your suggestion/solution especially useful, helpful, smart & that much more worth looking into. I've lost count the number of times in my life where, usually due to weather-related events and/or natural disasters, particularly hurricanes (although lots of flooding as well as a few tornadoes too) have either damaged or destroyed countless facilities and other very necessary infrastructure systems of various types & purposes, and been anywhere from days to weeks, and even several months in a few cases, without electricity, water, gas, internet/phones & communications, and it's also greatly upended or at least affected transportation & travel, first responders (LEO/EMS/FIRE), medical, business & finance, trade & commerce, education, tourism, etc and so on.... Basically EVERYTHING. and depending on the damage, there's sometimes no telling how long or what it's gonna take in order to fix whatever it is requiring repair, replacement or whichever solution. So again, I think it's definitely worth extensively looking into and figuring out. Bravo & well done for thinking outside the box

America should donate a couple of these large ships to the Philippines to drive onto the Second Thomas Shoal. This will help the Philippines maintain their hold on their territory and piss China off. It would also cement positive feelings within the Philippines towards the US.

Problem with reactivating some of those old ships is they are just worn out! Those frigates (Perry Class for sure) pivot points had to be fixed after commissioning. While some of the other classes could be repurposed they will not be. Why, to many people in the pipeline with hands in their pockets who want to purchase the next innovation in surface warfare? Sometimes you just have to go with what works! I do agree with some of the comments about the US ship building capabilities. Why Wisconsin? I believe that is where the new frigates are being built?

Hi. Just returned last Saturday from the Philadelphia Navy Yard and Drydock Tour of Battleship New Jersey. Awesome tour. Stopped at the dock where the JFK is berthed and took some photo's of her. I had not seen her since 1995 when I received a tour on board when she was the last Carrier overhauled at the Yard prior to the Yard closing. She is scheduled to be towed this year to Brownsville, Texas for scrapping so if you wish to see it get down to Philadelphia soon.

Served aboard the USS Oriskany CVA 34 During the Vietnam war which was sunk off the coast of Florida in 2006. as an artificial reef. It's sad to see many of these great ships scrapped. But as mentioned technology and budget constraints are killing the size of our fleet. Warfare is changing fast. And many new ships can be manned with less personnel savings 10s of billions of dollars over many years.

Nail two carriers together at their keels to make a "Dance Floor" between them and turn them into a monstrously large floating drydock/repair facility. Lots of storage space for parts, specialty shops and heavy-duty cranes. This drydock could keep up with the fleet, and be on hand to repair battle damage.
Ex: They're having problems re-charging ships with missiles. 'Stability issues'. Park a destroyer in this Dry Dock and re-supply it with missiles on a much more stable platform with special jigs, fixtures, and lifting devices. They won't have to travel all the way back to a port and be out of the action. They could be resupplied in hours (instead of days or even weeks).
These drydocks could also be anchored out (like at Ulithi Atoll) and become an instant port facility, and, a great asset to the fleet. A whole lot better than just becoming razor blades.
