In the video above (for those who don't know) when I say tonality, I'm talking about the picture; the color scheme, visual aesthetic. When I say tone, I'm talking about the mood. Also, for those wondering what I thought of the 2009 remake....I liked that it went back to a more serious tone (mood), tonality (in terms of picture), and vibe, but I thought the movie was "meh."
Dave McRae I am on board with you 100 percent. The first 4 are the only one's I give a crap about. When you said "tonality" you said it all. Great job guy.👍👍

Dave .. I agree with you 98.9%! 5&6 changes around for me! Part 5 lost that “in the woods” feel! But MOST important.. in part 6, not only did the atmosphere change but, .. not only tone of the movie (the setting and WAY it was filmed) the VIBE of the movie got lost in that.. the MUSICAL SCORE changed DRASTICALLY!!! I think it had to do with modern progressive MTV music being in films at that point.. ie.. Alice cooper or like Dokken in Nightmare 3! The score of the film has a LOT to do with it! 1-5 had that classic Friday the 13th score with minor changes to the Melody! Part 6 all that started to change! Part 3 changed with the HOT ICE performance (disco crap) but .. it was was only used in the opening credits and closing credits! And.. one little spot in the convenience store scene but .. other than that, through the movie was the classic score used in the previous 2 films! For me.. all that kinda really changed in part 6! Love your videos man! Keep it up!!!

I think Jason X and Goes to Hell are underrated. Friday fans seem to like the comedic Jason Lives and gory Final Chapter the most. And yet they hate Goes To Hell which has a lot of the most gory scenes of the series and Jason X, which has comedy very similar to Part 6. I don’t get it.
Part VI Jason Lives to me was the BEST

Great video Dave! Thanks for sharing. I'm of the opinion that once many of these horror films get past the first couple of films, the initial idea is exhausted and they all become interchangeable and the only difference between most of them is which stuntman is wearing the costume. I think Halloween is especially bad at that because it not only inspired the Friday the 13th series, but then went dormant while that series ruled the box office through most of the 80's. But when Halloween came back, they essentially started mimicking Jason in scale and, in some cases, style of kills. Giving it this napkin thin story about a family chase didn't, in my mind, give it any more dignity in the creativity department than any of the others. They all serviced the same result.
Of all the Friday the 13th films, I actually enjoy "Jason Lives" the best. I think that film is incredibly smart in it's execution. The entire movie is effectively a love letter to the horror genre by throwing a slew of Easter eggs into the tale. You have the Frankenstein inspired reanimation of Jason. You have Tommy Jarvis standing in front of Karloff's Garage. The little girl who thought she was having nightmares was named " Nancy". The town is named "Carpenter". Megan mentions Cunningham road after the director of the first Friday the 13th, Sean Cunningham. There's allot more. And to be honest, it sounds like this new Halloween film is going to essentially ape that film as well with similar Easter eggs from it's own series.
So while I certainly agree many horror sequels tend to be tired rehashes of established material, I think Friday the 13th actually does a better job of embracing the material honestly and trying to evolve it, if not always effectively, into broader scopes. I think that explains why it remains the most successful franchise in the horror industry.

Friday 1980 is my 1st in the list too, best atmosphere, downright creepy and cozy that location. I love masked Jason but the 1st one is my favorite.
While I don't agree with your ranking I enjoyed listening to your reasoning and I thought you argued it well.

I remember watching the 1989 Batman movie in the theater and they had a teaser trailer for Friday part 8 and everybody busted out laughing when the title of the new Friday the 13th movie was said... not a good sign for a horror movie lol.. I agree on the 1-4 being the series.
The only Friday the 13th movies I enjoy are parts 1-4 and part 6 the others I'm okay with or don't enjoy. Nice to hear from you Dave thanks for the video.

Part 6 is my fav because it was the first horror movie I ever seen and the first movie that got me into horror. That's why friday the 13th and jason Voorhees is my fav slasher franchise. I'll admit it's not the best movie in the series but it holds a special place in my heart

2 and 4 are my favorites by far.
Sorry but part 6 is way better then 2 or 3 IMO and most other die hard Friday the 13th fans. My rankings would be part 4,6,1,2,3. The rest I don't even rank because yeah the screwed them up.
After discovering you today, you’re my spirit animal. LOL. You got this exactly right. I’m a purist as well. F13 ends for me after part 4. The rest is pure junk. I’m not really much of a fan of most of 3 or 4 though 3 has some great moments. I’m glad the original is getting the love from critics it deserves. It is a rock solid scary movie with great scenes and a memorable finale. Part 2 is just about its equal since it is a different, and scarier, killer. I hate when any final girl is killed, but Alice was given a good long scene and great death.

My favs are the first 4, after that they are all crap. I was also disappointed in the reboot, they say it was a reboot but it felt like a sequel.
I agree Dave when I watch a franchise like Friday or Halloween I generally only like a few films in that franchise like the Friday movies I only really enjoy 1&2, 3 i can watch as it has some redeeming qualities. I don't get these people who say no most of the Friday films are good and I say why? All they can answer is blood and gore. I need a good story, interesting characters, mood, Atmosphere, suspence, pacing and cinematography.
I only watch and enjoy one movie from this franchise regularly: _Jason Lives._ And _Part 2_ is my second favorite. But I get all the _Friday the 13th_ I need from the former. I feel like the ideas behind the franchise are at their most artful and entertaining in the sixth installment. When someone wants to watch a good horror movie, but haven’t seen these films, I show them _Jason Lives._

The first 6 films to me are golden(almost equally but just in different ways), there’s a drop off at part 7 then another drop off for 8,hell, and X...but at the end of the day I can throw any of these on and still have fun.
Me being a Halloween fan I have always safely felt that Jason Lives is my only favorite F13th

My favourite is part 3. its a decent horror series but your correct the tone does change after part 4. i know your not a fan of the Halloween sequels dave but it does annoy me when horror fans slate the H sequels all you need to do is watch most of these Jason and Freddy films and the Halloween sequels don't seem so bad...

Lol im pretty much the same Dave.. purist i like all the originals and maybe the sequel in some cases ... i do like part 2 jason i prefer his look with the sack head and unmasked he looks like he has been living in the woods for years with the long hair and beard but still using the mongloidish head from the 1st one. So the rest i like just to see jason kills and it became fun to watch especially after part 4. Jason is my fav slasher but movie quality wise the 1st and 2nd for me. Great vid Dave very entertaining

To be honest i love how jason goes to hell is shot and the filter of the movie. I only rank part 3 low because everything around jason makes me want to take a decade long nap and its just so dull. I like the final girl and jason but everything else is bland and so painfully average. I just dont know what steve miner was thinking after directing the scariest jason film PART 2. Literally if you dont know anything about jason or a friend or anyone you know. Show them PART 2 and they’ll be scared shitless. To me jason goes to hell is so fun and enjoyable to me i just cant deny my feelings towards the film. If you just turn your mind off and think of it not connecting it to any of the other films then its really enjoyable. But if you have to be serious jason X is a terrible concept. HES LITERALLY IN SPACE HOW IS THAT NOT WORSE THEN JASON GOES TO HELL?? I digress this is just my opinion but to each their own.
For me the series ended after Part 7.....After that it definitely turned into a shitshow

Awesome video,Dave 👍 Michael Myers is and always will be my favorite Horror icon. Jason as a character is okay,but I think the movies just really suck. I always found them to be really campy and silly. "Friday The 13th:The Series" TV show from the 80's was great though. So much better than those crappy movies. Those are just my thoughts.

ok, as the friday films go, id put 7 and X in front of part 5, then my list is like yours dave lol. That being said, i love the Kane Hodder Jason best because for personally I found him the most scarey. The more human Jasons from the 2-6 chapters has been done to death. Hes supposed to be human but also drowned as a child, and he survives shit that basically killed the rest of the cast, I mean, when was he truely still human? Hodders potryal comes off, too me, as a pissed off engine of destrution, which is really what all those incompent directors chose to do with him. He would have made Freddy vs Jason semi-watchable at least. Honestly i just think Hodder gave jason a personality that he was lacking. Just my opinon. Keep on doin what you do Dave!

My bottom 4 are because
Jason X - Jason goes into space was absolutely ridiculous. It was an odd clunky , temporary entry in the series until Freddy vs. Jason. It was bad but not worse than the other two I have lower
New beginning - fake Jason just cheapened the film. No one wants to see a Friday the 13th film without Jason just like no one wants to see a Halloween film without Michael Myers.
Jason takes Manhattan - You barely see Jason in NY and when he is there (IDK why the hell he'd be in NY), it's only the last hour or so. The ending was confusing and absurd seeing him to revert back to a child after a sludge bath
Finally the shit show called
Jason Goes to Hell - first they give him the ability to suddenly take over bodies (which is stupid and shitting on every Friday the 13th fan who loved the previous films where Jason was simply an unstoppable killer) then create new relatives and say "only they can only kill him (since when?) and finally a special dagger can send him to hell? They started making up his origin story and it became so ridiculous I will never rewatch this pos again. It deserves to be the most hated in the series
How can you not be a fan of Friday the 13th? Jason Voorhees has a huge imprint in the horror genre. Very sad. However, I do agree with you about the first four being the whole series. It should have stopped after part 4. That was supposed to be where he really did die. But why should i go on? U dont give a frogs fat ass about Friday the 13th LOL

I find that the early even-numbered films (parts 2, 4, and 6) are the best, and I've noticed that the general fan opinion has shifted to agree with me on that position over the years. Parts 1 and 3 still have their defenders, but they don't seem to hold up as well in retrospect. The original film tries its best to capture the tone and pacing of Halloween, with uneven results (I'm looking at you, coffee-making scene). And the third film's 3D effects make it feel the most dated of the early entries.
Part 5 is probably the worst film in the series, thanks to its meandering second act that mostly abandons Tommy and the other halfway house residents for the local yokels and a parade of victims who appear in only one scene. Part 7 isn't much better: it's a shameless imitation of the fourth film, but with a less likable group of teens in the cabin this time. Despite featuring a telekinetic protagonist, it may be the least-unique entry in the series. Part 8 is 90 minutes of goofy fun if you're in the mood for it, but a horror film it is not.
Part 9 overcompensates for the lack of creativity in early entries by making something that has about as much in common with the Friday the 13th TV series as it does with the previous movies. Too bad, as it actually shows some real technical competence and makes an effort at characterization that is quite welcome. Speaking of TV shows, Part 10 is practically a crossover with Andromeda, and despite a few funny jokes and one cool kill (pun intended), it really does "suck on so many levels." Freddy vs. Jason is an Elm Street movie, so it doesn't really count. The "remake" is just another sequel that could easily slide in before the prologue of Part 10. That said, it's probably the best film in the series since 1986, despite some annoying characters.
I'm a horror purist, except when dealing with Friday the 13th. I enjoyed Halloween 1 the most, then 2 and 4 (tied), and enjoyed 3 for what it was and kind of wish Carpenter had gotten to make it into an anthology series like he wanted. H20 is a mixed bag. 5 has a lot of problems. 6 would be higher on my list if the plot was more coherent and last hokey with the whole cult thing. Resurrection is just a big stain on the series. Rob Zombie's remakes are two flavors of shit. For my money's worth, Myers never needed a reason behind his actions. No cult, no curse, no Thorn (part 4 is counted as part of the Thorn trilogy, but neither the symbol nor the man in black existed in the franchise until part 5 came crapping along.)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 1-3 are my preferred three movies, with 1, then 3, then 2 as my favorites with New Nightmare as a neat side-story. 4-6 I can leave behind. To me, there was no more story necessarily needing to be told after Dream Warriors wrapped it all up nicely. I also hated how Dream Master took a big crap all over the surviving teens from part 3. To me, I found that insulting and disrespectful to their characters and it sullies my enjoyment of the zanier part 4. Part 5 is a confused mess and part 6 was Freddy on cocaine with diarrhea.
But the Friday The 13th franchise? Holy shit, it's awesome. I don't care (much) for the story, I just take it as a fun *campy* experience. My favorite is part 6. It doesn't take itself too seriously but still has great atmosphere and doesn't disrespect the fans, just a few knowing winks at the audience. The soundtrack is killer and Jason looks badass. Followed by maybe 3 and 4 tied for me, and the rest are just in a big jumbled mess because they're just so interchangeable, but each enjoyable for their own reasons. I loved how zombified and big Jason was in part 7 and I oddly accept the psychic girl in that unlike psychic Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 5. It was an obvious copycat of Halloween, but with a bigger focus on mature content; sex, nudity, vulgarities, drugs, blood and guts, and so forth.
The only ones I don't care for are 8 (mostly because it was boring with the only highlights being Jason's scenes and the few moments of humor), part 9 because it no longer felt like a Jason movie, but more like some sort of oddball Evil Dead ripoff (yes, I'm aware of the Necronomicon's presence in Jason Goes To Hell) and Jason X because it was so far into stupidity that I couldn't take *anything* in it seriously. For me, I need to be able to take _something_ in the film seriously to really appreciate the humor and horror, but Jason X was just self-parody unlike the more tongue-in-cheek approach part 6 had taken. Plus it's in space, in the future. I have no comment.

For me the only sequels that are complete sh*t are #8 and #9. #10 is fun, and #7 is dumb, but still decent.
I agree the first 4 are definitely the best with 3 and 4 as my top favorites.
I'm a huge Friday the 13th fan!!! GO JASON VOORHEES!!! Jason takes Manhattan isn't that bad in my opinion. Jason X is totally out there but I did enjoy it even as corny as it was lol and Jason goes to hell was a total shit show!
Jason takes Manhattan had one of the best kill scenes in the friday the 13th series...julius getting his head punched clean off haha!

7) Friday the 13th (Sorry. I don't know why I rank this one so low, but it's not because Jason isn't the killer. I just felt that there were parts of the movie that really dragged on, like when Alice is making the tea. But the third act is great and some of the scenes are terrifying, like when Brenda dies at the archery range!)
