I heard Sutherland frequently in the 60s and 70s at the Metropolitan Opera (old and new) and Carnegie Hall and one of the most striking qualities of her voice was its remarkable heft and size, particularly considering its flexibility and range. This is something that tends to get lost in her studio recordings, where everything is balanced and engineered, but it comes across more clearly in live performances like this one.
I completely agree. I heard her live in London mainly from 1980 and the quality which struck me perhaps more than anything else was the all-embracing size of the voice. Studio recordings don't really capture this, though live ones do give a little idea of what the voice was like in the theatre. For me, her voice was the greatest I ever heard. Her like will not be heard again - the world has changed.
This performance is indeed one of my favorite Lucias. By 1975, her voice had started to darken some more. I enjoy this Lucia because it was at the beginning of her voice darkening, which means we get the best of both her forming darker voice and the slightly lighter voice she had a few years back.
