The only way to empty our minds are to be good people, and practice with a great master where he can help clean our inequities/kilesas from us. Unless we purify ourselves by being better people, we cannot possibly empty our minds, so as to be mindful of the present moment.
He mentioned finding contradictions in the detail. I think a key message here is not to worry so much if there is a struggle with detail, but allow it to guide you to the bigger picture and your own truth. I hope that resonates.

This is why we need a great Master who knows each and every different route. This is why the Siddhartha Gautama had to be perfectly enlightened and become a buddha. Otherwise we a maha-bodhisatta whose paramitas is almost as high as a buddha. This is the reason why the previous buddha said his teaching will not last more than five hundred years. However, it is nonetheless better for us to strive on learning whatever Dhamma ia left, than wasting our lives away to greed, anger and delusions/ignorance.
Every person in this world is different, born for a different reason, attached to their own truth of life. Person to know his own truth cannot follow anyone else path i.e anyone else's words. Now Majority of humans resist difference amongst them. Hence they are tempted to interfere in anyone else life with a motive of converting those differences into similarities. That's why every individual who lives his own way(path towards Your Own truth) has to fight other man's words to reach his own truth of life
Kerry Irving Religion & scriptures are there to guide us . It is up to the individual to find the real truth & make efforts to understand true meaning of life using it.
