How to Connect Bluetooth Devices to your phone, laptop

People often wonder how to connect a Bluetooth device such as a Bluetooth speaker, headphones, earphones, earbuds or even devices like mice and keyboards.
It is really easy to connect or pair Bluetooth devices from speakers and headphones to earbuds by following a few easy steps. Although sometimes there are a few differences, the basic steps are virtually always the same, and when they are not, there are just a few easy steps to take, promoted by the mobile phone, tablet or laptop.
First grab your phone and your Bluetooth device like your speaker, headphones or earbuds. Make sure your Bluetooth device is powered on and ready to pair.
Next, head to your phone's settings. Look for the "Bluetooth" menu and tap that magic button to turn it on.
Your phone will start scanning for nearby Bluetooth devices. Just wait a sec, and you should see your device pop up on the list.
Tap on its name, and there you are! A pairing code might appear on both your phone and device. Enter it to confirm your newfound Bluetooth link, and you're good to go.
Connecting Bluetooth to your laptop is just as easy. Open your system preferences or settings menu, and navigate to the "Bluetooth" section and pair as before.

It tends to be very much easier with Bluetooth 5, but as you say it can be difficult sometimes.

mine keeps saying ‘make sure it’s turned on, in range, an ready to pair’ even though it’s turned on right next to my device and ready to pair

It’s a bit difficult to diagnose remotely, but it is probably worth checking that the device is in a mode ready to pair. Or you may want to try connecting the device to the source / controller. A little difficult to say. Hope this helps.
