Metallica vibes about the fear of being a new parent! Vocal ANALYSIS of Evile's "The Unknown"!

- I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Ol' Drake at Bloodstock back in 2021, and have been eagerly awaiting an opportunity to bring their awesome music to this community. Their recent release of "The Unknown" which exemplifies Ol's fear of being a parent for the first time just seemed like the right time. Oh, how I relate to this!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Evile for the first time, performing "The Unknown”.

Thank you, Elizabeth!
Evile started out as a Metallica tribute band, so it makes sense that they combine so many Metallica-esque elements into their own original sound.
Evile are just outstanding!! Time for them to get the recognition they very well deserve 🤘🏽🔥
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Evile's my favorite band and this means the world to me :)
Ol's twitch is really super fun, been modding for Ol for like 3 years now and he's just a blast to hang around with :)
Couldn’t agree more with the big guy on this! One of my favourite UA-camrs reviewing one of my favourite bands! Ol and the band are great guys and it’s about time they get the recognition they deserve ❤
@@shigamatt Hey Matt :)
Great to see you react to these guys.
Their album “Five Serpents Teeth” is one of my favourite albums of the current century.
fun fact - Evile's debut album,Enter the Grave, was recorded in Sweet Silence Studios (Denmark), and was produced by Flemming Rasmussen. Flemming also produced Metallica's Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets and ... and Justice for all in Sweet Silence Studios. So there is a Metallica connection ;-)
First good thrash album in over a decade at the time
My bands supporting evile in November in Edinburgh! Never been more excited to play a gig!
I'm actually stoked and surprised that you're reviewing them. I first discovered them a year before the original bassist Mike Alexander passed. I know you mostly review singing, but if you like the band, check out their "Enter the Grave" Album. Their most recognized song off that Album is "Thrasher" but I implore you to review "We who are about to die" an ominous intro and probably one of the best, crunchiest riffs I've heard, and great time changes. Thank you for doing what you do.
Enter the Grave is an amazing album. Though I still haven't really gotten used to the vocal change. Regardless this is the first time I have seen anyone react to Evile on UA-cam. At least what I have found anyway.
Elizabeth is friends with Ol. They met in Bloodstock.
Enter the Grave is amazing! Bathe in Blood is a favourite song of mine, the chug is immense ;)
Thrasher was on Rock Band a long time ago. I too discovered them around the same time you did.
Dang I edited my comment to fix some grammar and I lost my heart from Elizabeth lol
Evile are one of my all time favourite bands. I'm so surprised but happy to see you review a new song of theirs. I'm also made up you love it
Did I just discover a new favorite band! Serious Metallica vibes, Love it
Honestly, if there was ever a metal band who deserved to be bigger than they are, it is Evile. People and songs are just top top top.
Saw them in 2010 with Overkill in Baltimore. Got to meet them and spent about 20 minutes chatting with them outside the stage door after the show. Great guys who said they were humbled that I came to the show after my Dad's funeral earlier that day. Awesome and underrated band.
I absolutely love that you are reviewing this, they're a local band to me, Joel the bassist lives less than half a mile from me and is a regular in my daughter's pub.
Ol sounds amazing here, I'm sure any parent can relate to the lines "be now my teacher, be now my guide", a lot of people say that my daughter is very much like me so I guess I've done the guiding bit.
First I have to say I love your channel and as a singer myself I love and appreciate your technical analysis. This one is new to me too, musically not really in my wheelhouse but I love learning new things and I'm enjoying his "droning monk" sound. Very ancient Celtic sound, enhanced by the drums. Beautiful lyrics. I can only imagine the inspiration and feelings that went into writing them. For medical reasons and others I won't mention, I have never experienced the joy of parenting. I have loved and lost dogs that I considered my children. I just bought a plant yesterday and almost killed it today. Hoping I can keep it alive. Not sure I'm off to a very good start but I digress. Please know you are responsible for my current obsession with SOAD and new found love and appreciate for grunge which I rejected in my youth considering it full of sellouts, too mainstream to be cool. I was very taken with Disturbed's version of Sound of Silence. I had heard David's rendition and liked it but the visual impact of the video and your analysis brought it to a whole new level. When I accidentally came across your channel, I would hear you say "may you fall in love with music more everyday" and I'd respond, often aloud "how could that be possible"?? Well you have and are helping me do just that. So grateful to have stumbled down your rabbit hole. I was born with a musical gift and I turned my back on it. I feel like have once again been given a gift and you are helping me unwrap it. Thank you for restoring my inspiration and for doing what you do. Sorry this is so long. I've been restricting myself from commenting. Looking forward to your future work...Be my teacher, be my guide.
I had the absolute pleasure of having a fairly long conversation with Ol behind the scenes at Bloodstock '12 and bumped into all of the Evile guys (quite literally in Joel Grahams case as we crashed into each other via the entrance to the VIP toilets 😂) and every member of the band is just sheer class on and off stage. I was so starstruck I regrettably forgot every word of what we talked about but that day has stuck with me forever. Always been a fan of these guys and it's true they are more than deserving of a larger fan base. Especially when you consider they are not only one of the major reasons why thrash made a comeback in the mid-2000s but also because they really have a unique sound within the genre and are one of the few modern English thrash bands with some stature.
Over the past decade it's been a difficult ride for them. Ol never wanted to do vocals originally but stepped in after his brother and longtime guitarist/frontman Matt Drake stepped away around 2018 due to health issues, so this makes the fact that his vocals are now so amazing even more impressive!
Ol freely admitted in the run up to their last album release in 2021 that he had no idea what he was doing with regard to vocals but wanted to keep the band going and finally release another album. Kudos to him for his dedication and bravery and to the whole band for never putting a foot wrong!! 👏
For these reasons and more I will forever root for these guys. Loved every album they've done. Long live EVILE 👏👏🤘
Impressive with how far forward the vocals are in the mix. So many metal songs hid them behind the guitars, but this is vocal front and foremost. Makes it feel damn powerful.
Their cover of Cemetery Gates is epic.
You’re damn right. I’m pretty sure that’s how I discovered Evile.
@@shmick6079 I was the same. Heard it on Metal Hammer's tribute to Dimebag, Getcha pull CD.
@@justified_joseph Same. Very cool tribute.
Evile is an excellent band, one of my favorites from the new generation of thrash metal. Hugs from Brazil.
I find your amazement of the Heavy Metal music pretty cool! This is the first time I heard Evile and I do hear a bit of the Metallica in there. Thank you for broadening my Metal knowledge and the hope that HEAVY METAL LIVES!
Cool to see you following up on your bloodstock trip! If you'd like to check out some more metal awesomeness, I highly recommend Lovebites! The level of musicianship in this all-female band is absolutely amazing, and their vocalist is fantastic! Their live video of their song "Holy War" is a great place to start. It's a perfect example of the kind of music they play, and their vocalist, Asami, really shines throughout.
Is it wrong that a metal song gets me choked up? I’ve watched this twice now, iridium reacts yesterday and your reaction today. Both times. Absolutely intense. A new band for me to get lost in. New to me anyway. Thanks E!
Hell no, it's not wrong at all, everyone has a song or two that tweak the heartstrings for whatever reason, the more times I listen to this the more I can relate to it 🤘
I’ve known these lads since their Metallica tribute days. I absolutely love to see them do so well. Ol has clearly put some serious graft into his vocals and it pays dividends here for sure. Massive respect for that. Chris Clancy has done a great job on the production once again and I’m sure he really pushed Ol with his vocals.
This song caught me off guard tbh on first listen but now after a fair few listens it’s really grown on me. Absolutely love it. I want nothing but the world for these guys. They deserve it ✊🙌👏👏👏👏💙🤘🤘🤘🤘it’s about time that ‘tallica took them around the world - just saying 😜 hope this new record sends em into the stratosphere
I'm happy to see Ol get some love. I haunted Evile's message boards as a youngling so they're part of my teenage core.
Can’t wait!
Ol’s singing has and amazing evolution here 🔥. The new song is becoming one of my favorites 🤘
Love evile soo much, saw them live for the first time last year after trying for over 10 years. Amazing live!
Hey I appreciate what you did on this channel. I send you love from France 🇫🇷. A band that I love which is less known : "citizen soldier". This group make song about fighting against mental ill. I recommend the song : "Would anyone care" which is amazing and will give you a huge emotion. The message share in this song is really important. Hope you see this comment...
PS : I apologize if I made some grammar mistakes, obviously English isn't my native language....
The influence of Metallica is eternal.. You can almost hear it in every hard metal band since Metallica was created.
So sick. I remember buying Enter the Grave in 2007 as a 14 year old. Been a huge fan since, seen em maybe 10 times now and have loved this Ol era of Evile. Can't wait to see what else they deliver over the years
Awesome to see Evile getting some exposure to a wider, potentially non-metal audience via your channel, Elizabeth 🤘🏻😁
(…you should hear Ben doing I Believe in a Thing Called Love by The Darkness at Karaoke 😉)
This is frickin' awesome! These fella are from my home town! I saw their last gig as Metallica cover band! The drummer used to be Saturday kid years ago when I worked in a different comic book store! I literally saw him in my local pub a couple of weeks back!!!!
In fact, when he first left Evile before returning to take over as vocalist, me and my mate did his first interview about it, on a wee little podcast we used to do, in the back room of a real ale pub in town!
Agreed on the Metallica vibes! Accurate analysis 💯👍
I like to think the Heavy in Heavy metal comes from the definition of deep and meaningful. =)
That was epic Elizabeth!
Great track, fantastic band. Oli has the band pivoting into a more groove metal space.
This will be new to me !!! Always willing to find something new .
Discovered this band from this channel. They destroy!! They definitely need more exposure. Thank you Elizabeth!!
Great to see this reaction for a band local to me who deserve so much more recognition.
Thank you Elizabeth for this one, I've heard of Evile (and probably heard them) but had not actually listened to them, now I have another band to add into my listening rotation, which is a big part of why I watch your videos
Also I agree with your take that they deserve much more attention and credit for their skill and talent
Bright Blessings
ETA: might I suggest that you check out the band Semblant, they're out of Brazil, I would say start with Mere Shadow, What Lies Ahead, Throw Back to Hell, or perhaps Daydream Tragedy - those are some of my favorites but not necessarily their best, depending on your taste in metal, they have an amazing duet of lead vocals Mizuho and Sergio
Since you’ve been doing some Sleep Token recently I think you would EAT UP Bloodsport (from the room below) some of Vessel’s most emotional singing. Truly a beautiful song. Much love! ❤
Can't wait to check this out.
Let there much rejoicing in the birthday of Mycroft the magnificent, Harbinger Of Good Fortune & Heir to the Voice! Yeah, yeah- just had to got here! 😁
This was excellent. I've never heard of this band. This is better than anything Metallica has put out in recent history. Thank you, Elizabeth!
Their first album was produced by Flemming Rasmussen at Sweet Silence Studios, no less! ie. the Producer for Ride, Master, and Justice.
Suggestion: Red Handed Denial - “Father Said” (Lauren Babic live one take performance) Recentish version of Lauren who can sing beautifully and scream with the best of them.
If you listen to their track "Thrasher" you might like it, the thrash in this song is relentless
Dark sound...
Touching lyrics...
I like it!!!
If there's one band I never expected to see a reaction video on, it's Evile. Let's just say I'm pleasantly surprised!
Did not expect this one... awesome 👌
Just so Metal ......love it
This is pretty good for year 2000+ metal.
Should try their previous albums ;)
Plenty of good metal. Stop being a boomer.
@@krisdaschwab912 Lol Boomer, that's so f'ing funny
My daughters got 3 months till she gives birth to twin daughters and I CAN'T WAIT TO BE A GRANDFATHER 🙂
Always enjoy your reviews and I'll bet you're a GREAT mom!!!
Never thought I'd see Evile on this channel lol
It's time for Inamorata. Metallica 72 seasons greatest song
Fantastic song, and as usual a really great analasys.
Will keep posting and hope one day these songs are picked :D
In Flames - Alias
Celldweller - Eon
Maybe everyone should upvote that dude that requests Red Handed Denial on every single video, so Elizabeth will feature them and he can finally stop.
Cool that you're reviewing Evile, I went to school with Joel 😀
Think you would love a day to remember .. Jeremy McKinnon does an incredible job of switching tones and going from a metal scream to a punk rock vibe
I REALLLY need you to review Colm Mcguinness. I recommend his nordic cover of "If I Had A Heart" he has AMAZING subharmonics and throat singing ability.
"Tattoos" or "Would Anyone Care" by Citizen Soldier. He has an amazing voice
Wires by Athlete "This song is an account of lead singer Joel Pott's fear and hope as he bonded with his baby daughter after she suffered a seizure shortly after being born and was rushed into intensive care." or Royal Blood - Rock duo
Hey, i have another little recommendation. I think you should look at the german (they went international later) Band Tokio Hotel that went viral in 2005 where the 4 band members still were teenies😶. So the singer Bill Kaulitz was not adult and because of that i think to watch at such a young singer is interesting too. They made TONS of fans but also many haters, so please dont judge at them😬. Monsoon, their biggest hit, was a german song first but because they went international they released it in english together with some other big songs of them in 2007. I really love them, and the songs they make nowadays are nice too, but they are nothing compared to the mega-hits in the 2000's. 💙
SUGGESTION: I would love to see you react to one of my favourite bands Woods of Ypres. Their song called "I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery" is really one of a kind, I think that you would like the vocals and the lyrics of the song. David Gold - The vocalist was truly a poet and a great musician, a lot of people say that the best part of his music was the fact that his lyrics were brutally honest and I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately I found out about the band years after his tragic death and I'm really sad that I won't be able to see them live. I'm really in a dark place in my life right now and their music is like a therapy for me. You should definitely check them out!
Excited to see you analyze some nwotm (post 2000 thrash). Evile is definitely one of the heavy hitters. Tons of really good new wave thrash bands out there.
So beautiful.
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
Hi Elizabeth, it would be really interesting to analyze the power metal band with symphonic metal influences Savatage🤘🤘🤘
Evile are quality thrash! Enforced is another great thrash band. And if we’re talking thrash, how is it you haven’t done an analysis of some Slayer!?!
I'm so glad I stumbled into your channel! I started and adored your analysis of Rammstein. I have many favourite artists, but there are a few that stand out with their specific and beautiful voices. Michael Polsen from Volbeat, Jökull Júlíusson from Kaleo and Sara Niemietz that I found on youtube, on the "PostModernJukebox" chanel. Maybe worth a try on one of them?
Have been checking out some lacuna coil also and loving it ty .
When songs slow, they got a cool, almost stereo reverb. Yea the guitar and bass are using chorus or certain things, But the mix as a whole in those areas, I can just hear it a tad brought up in the master channel, or side chain of it. It's a really (prob not cheap) really cool reverb tone. Cool vibe, shockingly never hear this till now.
I hear combination James Hetfield and Robb Flynn. Awesome
Want you to react if there's time, thank you for your reaction, I always admired on how you always analyze the songs and the vocals and the instruments.
Hiroyuki Sawano - into the sky
Hiroyuki Sawano - cage
One OK Rock - Deeper Deeper live yokohama
One OK Rock - We are live
How the hell did i miss this here?
Evile is my favorite band
Also be sure to check out the stuff Evile did when Matt was frontman.
And people (including Ol) consider Matt to be a real singer.
Looking forward to this one!
Please please do:
Distance
By Sleep Waker
Vocals are incredible, I think, but the way they serve to accentuate the overwhelming experiences the song covers is just unbelievable.
*Snake Eater* would be a great song for analysis... Loving the content!
😍Saludos desde colombia, excelentes videos....😍
I really like the tones to play with here
"We who are about to die" is a personal favorite about gladiators.
In addition to James Hetfield, I'm also hearing David Draiman from Distributed. Love your videos!
“Shape of Water” by Siamese would be a really cool voice breakdown. The amount of different vocal techniques & tech used on the voice is insane.
Evile put out some killer music back in the Matt-era. Look forward to hearing the new stuff.
I have a Suggestion for an artist
I think you should absolutely have a listen to Mitski, specifically Brand New City or Bag of Bones
the vocals are absolutely incredible and she kills it every single time
PLEASE DO A VIDEO FROM ANGEL OLSEN LIVE AT MAXWELLS!!!! ,The sky opened up.
Hi Elizabeth! Thanks for this ~ My fiance loves this band and loves your analysis, and I have a deeper appreciation for them now. Please do something by Battle Beast ("Eye of the Storm") and he is requesting "Fade" by Devilskin. Keep Rockin'! You're an addiction we're proud to admit to! Thanks for bringing the love for music 🎵🎶💜💜
If you’re going to attend a metal festival, Hellfest, or Wacken Fest are the best
Lovebites - Swan Song with Chopin intro or Edge of the World both from (Five of a Kind, 21/02/2020) Then we will move onto the heavier songs.
Speaking of metal bands that don't fit the normal mold of metal bands, I would recommend you try Avatar. The structure of this song, how it shifts and changes but always comes back, reminds me of 'Bloody Angel' or 'A Secret Door'.
Johannes, the lead singer, grew up learning piano since age 5, picked up trombone ('Puppet Show', he plays it), and guitar as well.
I just saw ur reaction of caruso by Lara Fabian, it could be great to see ur reaction with the original singer Lucio Dalla the live version is just amazing
Awesome 🤘
Fascinating. Never thought I'd see a revival thrash band like Evile on this channel. Maybe that opens the door for Power Trip (RIP Riley Gale)?
Addendum: This is not a thrash song, this is a Load/Reload song. I'm pretty disappointed. Cool solo though.
Open your musical tastes a bit, you'd be surprised at what you'll end up liking.
@@lantzferguson Don't be so patronizing, you'd be surprised at friendly responses. I've forgotten about more slow metal than you'll ever know.
I would love to hear your analysis of the band Tyr. The lead singer has a pretty unique voice.
You should definitely be checking out Bad Omens. The vocalist is pretty insane as far as the different tones and uses he has of his voice. JUST CHECK IT OUT! Specifically "The Grey" to start with. I think you would really like what he does with his voice on the chorus. Might tempt ya to dig into some of their other songs.
Suggestion: Motionless in white - Masterpiece. Chris Motionless has a very unique voice and style!
Elizabeth, found out something I never knew, Ronnie James Dio did a cover of Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare. It is really cool!
Never heard Evile but i like it. You should check out Erik Grönwall, he´s not only the new singer of Skid Row but has made some great covers. My favourite cover so far is Hallowed By Thy Name ♥
He's a legend!!! 🤘
Little Metallica 🎸💥👶 😁
Suggestion: Orbit Culture - "North Star Of Nija" (Live in Studio)
Can you do forestella's 'hijo de la luna' reaction? It's so beautiful it feels fantastic
The Clansman (live Rock in Rio 2001) - Iron Maiden
La Cantata del Diablo (live Mexico 2017) - Mago de Öz----- > just a Master piece
Hijo de la Luna - Stravaganzza
The Crown And The Ring (Lament Of The Kings)Live 2008 - Manowar
Design your Universe (live Retrospect) / Cry for the Moon(live Retrospect) - Epica
I remember you - Skid Row (live)
Soulbound - Unleash the Archers
Burning Time (live) / Dracula - Iced Earth
Ategnatos / King - Eluveitie
Y por supuesto la mejor banda de metal de la actualidad VolBeat, cuyo cantante posee la voz más poderosa hoy en día.
Falling Stars -Serj Tankian (live)
Please!!🥺
