  • A 1987 interview with the most delightful, Shelley Long. We talked about her new movie "Hello Again". (Sorry that I had to remove the movie clips for copyright reasons) but the interview is well worth watching. Her first film was A Small Circle of Friends. She is best known as Diane Chambers in Cheers.

Diane suffered so much verbal abuse on this show, especially from Carla...

I see a lot of Diane here. I believe that Diane Chambers is/was one of the great sit com characters of all time. She was led by her ego to say good bye to that role.

She left for a number of reasons that need to stop being over-analyzed. She already had her contract with Disney and only brought it up when asked about leaving to make the point that it was crammed schedule to do both. Also when talking with the Cheers writers they told her they had a hard time coming up with what might happen with Diane in upcoming seasons other than another lover that would be similar to Frasier. She wanted to pursue projects she wouldn't have gotten the chance to otherwise, and whether YOU think they were any good is not the point. If it were all about being a star (or "ego") she wouldn't have tried lower budget eclectic stuff. As much as I LOVE Cheers and the Diane character, it was just a job in the scheme of things and yet people act like it was a crime. She wasn't the first person to leave a show and certainly hasn't been the last, so why the need to continuously shame her for it? I guess everyone needs to put their 2 cents in...Even if ego played a part it still doesn't need to be joke anymore because it's been 32 years...

@@amandsplainreacts3786 Guess we can copy paste this comment all over the internet where bashers are bashing her for leaving.

@@amandsplainreacts3786 It's true that she wasn't the only one to leave a successful series. Farrah Fawcett left Charlie's Angels. Suzanne Somers left Three's Company (she was fired but she took the risk of walking out for a higher salary). Seinfeld shut down his entire show after 180 episodes. Shelley did 121 of Cheers. I don't think there's a law out there that says leaving after 5 seasons is a tragedy but leaving after 8 is a mark of creative integrity.

@@amandsplainreacts3786 Completely agree. Also I've always found it staggering that instead of praising her courage for leaving a successful show and following her dreams, people put her down for doing it. Isn't it admirable? How many of us would never have done it for fear of not succeeding? How many of us still don't do it? People may see her career as a failure by Hollywood's standards but in my book, she dared to dream. She believed in herself and, at an age that wasn't even considered young for many, especially in her field (she was almost 40 when she left Cheers), Shelley wanted to see what else was out there. I know many people who stay in jobs for decades out of fear and out of comfort, even though they absolutely hate/are bored of their day to day. Kudos to Shelley Long.

Thank you to all the commenters who so eloquently defended Ms. Long's decision to leave Cheers after five seasons. Have such a soft spot in my heart for this serious actress who excelled in comedy. The parting in Season 5 was pitch perfect. No matter how satisfying and delicious a five-course meal may be, you get full and must push the plate away. Had Cheers been a film, Sam and Diane would've gotten married and the screen would've just dreamily faded to black. I'm grateful for 5 glorious seasons that continue to bring me endless pleasure.
