- This is a quick ride along video of my 94 YJ with the 2.5L 4 cylinder, 5 speed trans, and 4.88 gears with 33x12.50 mud tires. I'm not trying to drag race or redline, but just drive normally, trying to match speed with other cars on the road. This video will help show what it's like with larger tires and 4.88 gears with a 4 cylinder Jeep.
Ok thank you!
Thanks for the video!! I’m definitely doing this.
What is 4th gear 60mph like in it rpm wise? I don't always like to use 5th as it eats clips
Inferno Gaming I sold the Jeep last year but from what I remember, with 4.88s 4th gear at 60 wasn’t bad, maybe close to 3000rpm. If I was on an incline or trying to gain speed I’d run in 4th on the Interstate and just got to 5th to cruise and maintain speed over 60.
Thanks for posting. I have 93 YJ and was looking at 4.88 gear switch. This definitely clinched it for me.
Just did the back of our jeep, son loves it! Not we have to do the front, and we are still working out our videos.
Those tires are begging for a balance
For 35 12.5 15r
4.10 how many km/h
4.56 how many km/h
My 2008 nissan frontier (navara d40) vehicle
Dyno test = 174 km 4450 rpm
Tire = 33 12.50 15r
Ring pinnion = 3.69
Im change tire 35 12.5 15r
sometimes highway sometimes mountain
Ring and pinnion ? 4.10 ? v 4.56 ?
I can get 93-5mph small sawmpers 2.5 94 wrangler
Hey I want to do this to my tj, will these gears improve towing? Thanks!
I didn't tow with mine, but you get so much more low end grunt that I can't imagine it doing anything but making it better for towing.
@@sornywrx thanks alot!
So how did it perform on the 33” with the 4.88 gears🤷♂️
I didn't do any 0-60 tests or anything but it eventually gets there. 90MPH was around the top speed and as long as I wasn't up in the mountains, I could pass on the interstate at 70mph as needed, it was just a bit slow to get there.
Which gears should help with speed ? 4.56
The 4 cyl has 4.10 stock so if you're wanting to get up to speed quickly then 4.56 would be good. But even with the 4.88s I could cruise at 75mph no problem and go 80-85 if it wasn't on a hill.
Would you recommend the 4.88 gears or go higher?
I thought the 4.88s were perfect with my 33” tires. Maybe if I had 37s or bigger I’d change it but even 35s would be fine, IMO.
@@sornywrx thank you!!
Have you hit a top speed yet I’m thinking about doing this to my Jeep... and did the 4.88s make a big difference?
4.88s were a HUGE difference. I could never have another 4 cyl YJ or TJ with stock gears and bigger tires. Top speed I've done is maybe 90.
I’m about to buy a 95 YJ with the 4 cylinder. You’re saying with the 4:88 gears you can run the highway pretty good with 33s?
@@thebeastusername It can survive on the highway ok. Passing is rough when there's big hills. I sure wouldn't want to daily drive it on the highway, but it definitely was doable and only really inconvenient when trying to pass at 65MPH+. I could cruise at 75-80mph all day as long as its not up and down mountains.
I have a 2.5l 4 cylinder tj as you can see in my profile pic. But I was wondering, Would 4.88s and 33s be good for a daily driver? And also how is your gas mileage? Thanks!
I think 4.88s are perfect for a daily driver. It sounds like a really low gear for the highway, but if you have 33s it's really not. My Jeep would rev about the same in 5th on the highway as my Mustang with 4.10 gears. That being said, I wouldn't want to daily drive it for hours a day. I had a 45+ min commute each way and after a few days I'd switch it up and take my other car to take a break. I'm not sure about gas mileage but expect to lose a couple of mpg if you do 4.88s if it's a lot of highway driving. Totally worth it though unless you're driving hundreds of miles a week.
@@sornywrx nice I will look into it!
