It's so beautiful how Rush was able to stay an independent band with very little label backing their whole career and have so much success. It was all talent and constant touring that got them noticed until "Moving Pictures" They had a lot of negative critics back then, but their popularity on the FM Rock radio stations kept 'em going and getting bigger anyway, Bet their induction into the Hall of Fame was even sweeter because of that.

2112 and farewell to Kings were the albums that got me with rush…. My brothers and I would get an album and listen to it together the whole thing…. Besides Boston, others these two are the best full albums listen, and it was all awesome!!!!🎉😂❤
No dummies in a RUSH crowd. That was one of the coolest things about their concerts. RUSH was special, that’s the simplest way to put it. It’s one of the bands that makes me wish for the Rock and Roll Time Machine to take deserving youngsters back and show them how it’s done! Impossible to describe that experience in those days. I’d be a great tour guide. I took many newbies to many concerts and it was always a pure blast! They were always blown away. Wow was the most common word.
Love you guys! But I am AMAZED that you HAVEN'T reviewed XANADU yet (by Rush, NOT Olivia Newton John), especially as much as you love Rush. Been a Rush fan since early 80's, and I agree with many who say that Xanadu is their greatest MASTERPIECE. PLEASE make sure it is NOT the studio version, which is very good, but nothing compares to their 1981 (Exit Stage Left) performance. You WILL be blown away. I am sure it's already been requested 100 times already.
... The one to look for is the ultimate remaster by stickybits!... on that one you finally hear among other things the rhythm guitar Geddy plays at the end... Those sounds were mostly hidden on previous versions.
No offense, but I like the Olivia Newton John/Electric Light Orchestra Xanadu much more than Rush's song. Being Canadian, I tired of their endless pretention after about 15 years... and had barely started on their second song lol.
YES, some Rush. This the first song Rush fans heard after their epic 2112 album. Speaking of 2112, that's where you guys need to go. It's a whole album side but maybe instead of doing three videos one day, you could just do 2112. But I would also live for you guys to check out the Garden from their last studio album Clockwork Angeles. I've been a Rush fan from the beginning in 1974 & the Garden is one of my favorite Rush songs ever. Great video today guys.
Unquestionably, Rush was a gem among bands from the 70's forward. Always grinding out great music that a ton of people appreciated...while never popping to the top like other bands of their times. Such a unique sound....RIP Neil Peart...you were one hell of a drummer!
My cousin got Farewell To Kings on cassette tape back in the day and that was my first introduction to Rush. Sadly he died when he was 14 and Closer to the Heart always reminds me of him and I cried when I heard them perform it live in 1992 💕
My first date with my future wife was a Rush concert in Miami back in the day. She hadn't seen them before and really didn't know anything about them but loved, loved them after the show. I married that woman, lol... Seriously, it's a true story.
Once again, I have to plug for "Natural Science", the very last song on "Permanent Waves". It's 9 minutes long, and easily worth *every* one of them. 12/10, will not disappoint.
Rush is fun because they went through so many phases. Here they're in their pure prog phase. That was 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres. After Hemispheres they admitted they simply couldn't keep up that sort of complicated prog rock energy and raise families at the same time, so they dialed it back. Personally, my favorite Rush album is the 1985 album Power Windows. If y'all haven't reacted to "Marathon" yet, you should. That's possibly my favorite Rush song ever.
I've only seen RUSH in concert 3 times back in the day, but all were memorable. Watching Geddy playing base, singing and doing pedal synth and keyboard sometimes seemingly all at the same time was awesome. They were just plain unbelievably talented.
Saw Rush live during their Farewell to Kings tour back in 1978. Still one of my top five concerts of all time...three ultra talented and creative musicians playing to perfection for two plus hours.
So true! One of my favorites and even with Closer to the Heart it’s still a hidden gem in many ways. It’s the bridge from 2112 to my all time favorite - Hemispheres! ❤🧠
Yeah I far prefer this album to 'Hemispheres'. Even though I've never been keen on 'Closer To The Heart', with exception of the live version from 'A Show Of Hands' 🙂
J and Amber ❤❤ I couldn't agree with your comments about this brilliant band and this song more ~ if I tried!! Love this stunning piece of music and loved your reactions!! @RobSquadReactions
Rush in my humble opinion, was and is one of the Greatest Bands of all time. I wore their records out many years ago and I'm now 62 years old and still love them as much as back then.
The album this song is off of, by the same name, is absolutely Rush at their finest. This album is a pair with another great Hemispheres, which is the album the song Trees is off of.
As a classically trained guitarist this is one of my all-time favorite Rush pieces. The classic overture is fantastic. Over the years I have had conversations about musicianship when it comes to various groups. I am not saying this just because they are my Canadian boys. Their change overs are some of the best ever, especially for a three piece band. We talked about this for days when it came out. I played it until the album was almost worn out. I was in another world, like I am now. My son loves this. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
Had the privilege of seeing them five times from permanent waves to the R40 tour. Always brilliant. I had the additional privilege of seeing Primus in 2022 perform the entire album farewell to Kings. Absolutely amazing tribute from Primus to Rush. More of both these amazing Bands please.👍✌🖖🍻🇨🇦
I believe a big part of what made Rush special, especially early on in the 70's, was Aleks' classical guitar playing. He came up with some beautiful classical lines that gave that band their other-worldly sound. Songs like Lessons, Farewell To Kings, 2112, The Trees ... he was so creative.
Thus is my second favorite Rush album. The birds at the beginning are not sound effects. They moved Geddy's synths and Neil's percussion bells outside on either side of a courtyard. Alex' guitar pans back and forth because he literally walked back and forth between them.
Yes, this is one of my favorite Rush albums. If you guys have not checked it out yet, listen to closer to the heart from this album. Neil quotes that song in this song.
The Farewell to Kings tour was my first Rush show, 1977… Saw them 16 more times. I love how much you love and appreciate them. R.I.P. Neil Peart and long live Rush
While college students in the late 70s were listening to Elvis Costello or The Talking Heads, those of us who aspired for rock with a thinking-person's soul were listening to Rush. This was a band that navigated through the late Zep era, with kids blasting Nugent or BOC or AC/DC from their Jensens in their beat-up Gremlins. Rush were what "those kids" listened to...when secretly, every single musician I knew put them high on their personal fave list.
@@reallymysterious4520 Being Canadian, and having had Rush pushed down my pie hole for decades, I can honestly say every Rush song would be akin to torture at Guantanamo Bay. Tom Sawyer was good, Spirit Of The Radio was good... then you just can't cut your way out of the pretension with a knife.
This is the album that started my RUSH journey after seeing them warm up for Blue Oyster Cult in 1978. My brother went out the day after that concert & bought AFTK which had just come out. That concert changed my life. As a drummer, I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. I mean Albert Bouchard of BOC is no slouch behind the kit, but the magic I felt from Neil was transcendent. The next year when Hemispheres came out, we slept out for tickets & I was able to see them for their first headlining tour from the 4th row right in front of Geddy. Still to this day, the loudest concert I have ever been to & to this day they are still my favorite band.
Oh my! Thank you for reacting to one of my favorites off of the Farewell to Kings album. So many good songs on this album. Please react to - Closer to the heart, Xanadu, Cinderella Man
My personal favorite Rush album, and I've been a fan since their first album hit when I started high school. If "2112" was their first foray into prog, then this album was their first full prog album. Jay, you gotta do "Cygnus X1: Book One" off this album. The bass is phenomenal in it, and the drums not to shabby either.
Rush is the #1 band that I regret never seeing. I believe this song may have been my first exposure to Rush when I was about 15. At that age I was still mostly caught up listening to the music and the chorus and not the deeper meaning of the songs I head but, Rush has always amazed me that so much sound comes from a trio.
Totally awesome you guys did this. You should do “Cygnus X1” from this LP and then do “Hemispheres”. It’s a continuation concept. Of course Hemispheres is a whole side of the album. But incredible.
A later song from the late 80s but worth checking out is the title track from the album Presto. When they played that on the Time Machine tour, I could've gone home and been happy. I'd recommend the studio version for the full effect. You won't regret it
It's so great to find new Rush fans. Now that they're no longer around to tour I feared Rush's legacy might fade. Of all the Rush songs their highest charting song was New World Man, give that one a listen soon.
I suggest you consider reacting to one or more of these RUSH songs: "Test For Echo" by Rush, "Armor and Sword" by Rush, "Natural Science" by Rush and/ or "The Garden" by Rush - of course all of their songs are great
never saw RUSH but i did see PRIMUS play the entire album live in a small theatre-they even had kimonos and the proper instruments-dbl neck bass+guitar/lots of xtra drums was amazing just in case anyone doubted
Thank you for coming back to Rush guys. Come back again soon I hope. Still so much more to enjoy. Where to start? Jacobs Ladder, Different Strings, Natural Science (in fact anything from Permanent Waves you've not done yet), The Camera Eye, La Villa Strangiato (that'll bow your minds), Losing It (amazing), Xanadu (look for Exit Stage Left 1981 live version but a good quality one - you won't believe what you're seeing) and of course 2112 (it just has to be done). And then so much more. I love the way you guys get stuff so would really love to see more. Thank you thank you...
The first time I saw them, I was just tagging along with my friends to see a concert from a band I never heard of. This album had just come out and they were touring for it. I fell in love with them, and this is still one of my favorite albums. It's the 2nd one of a five-album streak of brilliance. And this song has always been on of my favorites. The way the bass bounces around is so fun! Also,. the lyrics feel so... current. I swear it could have been written today as opposed to over forty years ago. I love the drama in this song. I love how it ends on "Can't we find the minds to lead us closer to the heart?", and then you flipped the vinyl over and the first song on the 2nd side was "Closer to the Heart", which then recommended what is needed to address the problems in "A Farewell to Kings".
Great reaction as always, thank you! This is the very first song I ever heard from Rush and it hooked me immediately to the song and the band. It's still my favorite Rush song! Thanks again, keep doing what you do!
I also like long compositions from Rush, songs like "La Villa Strangiato", "The Necromancer" and "Cygnus X-1 (Book One - The Voyage)", be sure to react to this guys! You are awesome!
"Territories" from Power Rush's Windows also addresses "the more things change the more they stay the same" them and also is a bad ass jam! Great reaction as always...peace, love and soul!
I'm 20 but I'm not like any normal 20 year old I love old school rock n roll I love your channel as well I'm a big fan of the videos you put on this channel thank you for bringing back these dead songs from the grave because the kids these days listen to rap and hip hop thanks again guys peace ❤✌️✌️✌️✌️♥️♥️♥️♥️👏👏👏
Try Burton Cummings My Own Way To Rock, from former lead singer of The Guess Who. Old Rock & Roll. Also, you'd like Mama Let Him Play by Gerry Doucette.
You can think as much or as little as you want with Rush. You can just listen and let the music captivate you, or you can go deep. I think Rush is kind of an everyman's "progressive."
ASIA - " Sole Survivor " this is a true Rock Gem you guys need to hear from their first album in 1982 comes another super Amazing and heavy on the Drums and Guitars and all the other creative instruments they use plus the vocals are so cool 🎸🎹 youguys will definitely love this song too.
Gracias!!
This was the third album I bought from Rush after Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves. All great albums. Everytime you guys play Rush I always suggest to try the live version of Xanadu from The Exit Stage Left concert and this time is no different. Don’t miss some more amazing musicianship.
I have been a rush fan since day one. My buddy in grade 9 was Rutay's cousin, and got a copy of thier first album. Hooked. Seen them 15 times from hemispheres to thier final tour. Exceptional. I have always said they were the thinking mans rock band.
I have been waiting for a few YEARS for you guys to get here! Love the reaction as usual! So this was the very first song from Rush that I heard on headphones back in 1978 when I was 12 years old and it completely and totally blew my young mind!! Once again, Neil Peart writes lyrics in a song that can be construed as prophetic. The Royal Crown and Illuminati still owns us just like we know they did in medieval times. "The more things change, the more they stay the same", as Neil said in yet another song! In this song Neil asks, "Can't we find the minds to lead us closer to the heart??" Unpack it guys, we know the rulers are currently (today) and have always been (including in medieval times) evil and enslaving to "We the people" of the entire world! Our rulers need to be of the heart not the wars and suffering they have inflicted upon us to feed their greed. That is what Neil Peart is capable of professing elegantly in the grandeur of a remarkable piece of music and you can listen to this album over and over again and never ever be bored! Do Xanadu next, it will blow your minds, I promise!
@fearsomeforce2904 - St Catharines where Neil spent some of his youth has made a statue of him from his melted down cymbals and plans to put it in Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie where he passed many a summer's day. 👍
There are so many people that just flat out do not get RUSH. That’s okay everyone has their own taste - more for me. I’ve been a fan since the the late 70’s, was lucky to see them live multiple times throughout the years. Nothing like a live RUSH show. Love that you reacted to this one ❤❤. Can’t wait for the next one you listen to 🥰
Not "getting" Rush is not quite the same as not "liking" Rush. They tended to lay on the self-importance and pretension with large ladles. Great that many love a good ol Canadian band, but I've always preferred Max Webster, Prism, Streetheart, Loverboy, even that great western Canadian band Heart (since they toured here almost every 3 months when getting started).
"In a lyrical sense, Peart noted that as "A Farewell to Kings" deals with the idea of problems, "Closer to the Heart" addresses solutions."
They should have played them back-to-back at least one time.
my fav
Lyrics are important in this song. Listen to how close it compares to the times we are living in now. Timeless!
Cities full of hatred, fear and lies
Withered hearts and cruel tormented eyes
Yes.
Unfortunately, there is going to become a time in the history of our own country of internal conflict against our government… The tyrants

I love the acoustic guitar intro to this song, sounds medieval.

I always preferred Geddy's friend Kim Mitchell's band Max Webster. The Album A Million Vacations is virtually a perfect rock album.
There's a Rush song for every mood
For me 2112 is AWESOME
I've seen him do that live and it's still my favorite of their albums although I like all of their stuff.
I prefer Cygnus X-1
Me too
For sure. They need to hit that one absolutely. Turned them into who they became
YES, y’all have to find a way to react to the full 2112!!!!!

Neil Peart - drummer/lyricist/musician - rest easy
There is something timeless about Rush's sound. You figure that this is from 1977 but it doesn't feel that old. Amazing.
The follow up song to this is "Closer To The Heart". If you want to keep digging into RUSH's Sci Fi chops, I suggest trying "The Body Electric".

This has always one of my favorite Rush albums. Their first with a big win under their belt, or silk sash. Could that white robe be any more 70s?
What great sounds and voice.
That one of the beauties of Rush….you can pay attention to the lyrics or simply enjoy the intricate music journey…or both!
never saw RUSH but i did see PRIMUS play the entire album live in a small theatre-they even had kimonos and the proper instruments-dbl neck bass+guitar/lots of xtra drums
was amazing just in case anyone doubted
Such a great album was listening to it this morning while I was getting ready for work
Thank you for coming back to Rush guys.
Man you guys are scoring! A Farewell to Kings was my first Rush album, and I really love seeing you guys enjoy it all this time later.
Rush is an acquired taste? I guess I acquired that taste the first time I heard them in 1976!!! And still haven’t lost it. 😊
Title track to my fav Rush album. And this has always been my fav Rush deep cut and in my Top 5 Rush songs
The very first song I heard by Rush as a teenager in 1977...been a fan ever since! This is an awesome album
Love that Rush picture on the wall!!
One of my favourite Rush songs! ❤❤❤
Xanadu from Exit Stage Left is a must! The live performance outshines the studio version.
oooh, DEEP CUT!! Love that you reacted to this one! Rush fans approve!!
You want more amazing takes on Rush? try "Mystic Rhythms","2112", and "Mission" you can't go wrong with this band
Gracias!!
GRACIAS!!!!
Been a fan since their first record and if I’m not mistaken Neil wrote most of their lyrics after he joined the band great music
Trust me you guys have to do " Far Cry" from Rush. You will not be disappointed
Far cry is amazing!!!! I absolutely agree!!!
Can’t wait for the next one you listen to 🥰
Next song, the incredible instrumental La Villa Strangiato or Xanadu.
I feel sorry fir them
Not "getting" Rush is not quite the same as not "liking" Rush. They tended to lay on the self-importance and pretension with large ladles. Great that many love a good ol Canadian band, but I've always preferred Max Webster, Prism, Streetheart, Loverboy, even that great western Canadian band Heart (since they toured here almost every 3 months when getting started).
Probably one of their more underrated tunes... YYnot, a Rush cover band, does a great live cover of this song.
Love this song and album!
