I bottle dig in Massachusetts. Your find was special. Nice stone works. I found a whole town. Just stone foundations and chimneys. Place was so old there was only black glass and pottery. Clear glass did not show up there. My partner thinks they used thin tanned hides as windows. We did not report this find. My partner is gone now... doubt I could find it again alone. It was definitely colonial era. Took a month to heal from the bug bites. Topsfield, Wenham, Hamilton zone. Off the Ipswich a few miles. Bushwacking gets you interesting finds. We took nothing from that site. Couldn't even find a iron nail with the detectors. Looked like it was all peg.
Cool stuff... Word of caution for anyone wandering woods in New England. There are old homesteads everywhere in the woods and in some cases old wells barely covered or flat out open. Watch where you're stepping!!! I've had a few close calls out metal detecting.
It’s in Rutland State Park! I never heard of it & I’m in Massachusetts. I’m reading about it & in 1933 this became part of the water shed for the Quabbin Reservoir! (Oddly, many, many valley towns were abandoned to create this huge reservoir with numerous islands which can be seen from the tower in the Quabbin, in Ware, now guarded since 9/11. ) They say on a certain part of the edge of this place, you can look down & still see the ruins of homes in the water! I have never seen that part of it! It’s a huge area & how they ever filled it, I have no idea! UPDATE: It’s 38.6sq mi! Wikipedia says the water inflow comes from New Hampshire!
The wife's grandfather was a civil engineer/contractor. Hem moved some buildings out of those towns (Enfield, Prescott, Dana and Greenwich) and built a funicular up the side of Mt Holyoke. I went to school in the 70s in Amherst. We used to take day trips out to Quabbin and up Mt Holyoke. Lots of history in the Connecticut River valley.
It is a beautiful area to walk. When I walked it in the 80’s to 90’s, there were lots of beaver dams! The biggest 4 wild turkeys all fanned out crossed the road not 100 feet in off of route 9! Saw a huge buck with my dad...that had to be before 91. On my way home from work, I’d seen 6 deer crossing the street, 2x2! Lots of fly fisherman in waders, a nice place with lots of trails & it seemed quite safe! I’m betting there are people living on the numerous small islands who are preppers!
You missed the largest prison ruin there. It’s up the hill on the right, hidden in pinetrees, just before the powerlines. And In winter there’s moose tracks everywhere, if lucky you might see one.
Where is this exactly?! I'm from Massachusetts and I'm working on a project relating to all of the haunted and folklore, legends, and true strange tales of the local region, in an effort to shine a light on the true origins and reality of the state of Massachusetts
It’s crazy stumbling upon this video. I grew up around there, and my father used to tell me stories of how he and his brother would explore the grounds when they were younger!
Right, these places litter the entire region from stem to stern. Interesting, but not really shocking or historically significant. Great video quality though. The hike through the woods would be of more interest to me as it is tranquil and relaxing.
Where is this exactly? I'm from this region and I'm working on a project relating to these subjects. Do you have any other New England examples to share? I live on land adjacent to this massive track of watershed land. This is just the tip of what lies in these woods. Like he said in the 4o's Boston needed more fresh water so they evicted four towns in the center of the state and took half of a few more towns, Barre included. All the people wore forced out and all that remains are the foundation, stone wall and old roads. The Swift river was damned to make the Quabbin reservoir, the four lost towns. The land adjacent to mine is part of Rutland state park which is for the protection of the Ware river and tributaries that also feed into the Quabbin water system. Most people who rely on this fresh water have no idea as to the human cost. It has become in the end an incredible natural protected are non the less. But stay away its haunted. BOOOOOO
Wow! I’m new to your channel and must say..... very impressive! The drone shots, editing, narration, history.......you covered it all! Awesome job! Thank you and I subscribed!
All the land that was taken for the the Reservoir is classified as Watershed land and you are not allowed to do any digging or anything that can potentially cause problems with the area that might eventually effect the the Quabbin Reservoir and good old Bostons drinking water. For those that enjoyed this and the makers of the Video you should check out Dana, Ma. it was also one of the areas taken but never flooded for the Res.
You know you are in early colonial when there is no metal. I had a boss from Britain... he laughed at my colonial bottle collection. They threw that "shit" aside. They dug for Roman stuff. He was born and raised in a 700 year old country house...
The first view of the trail going into the woods reminded me of Barre, Mass. The Quabbin Reservoir project in the 1930s left numerous ruins in that area. Just guessing at the location. So interesting!
That place would be an artist paradise. I can see someone armed with a camera, or oil paints and canvas or a sketch pad. Just so peaceful and beautiful.
I actually filmed at the prison camp a while back and it's a beautifully quiet location! Shame there isn't much left of it, I would have loved to explore more!

Wow! This isn't too far from me in the Albany NY area.Love it! Sacandaga Lake NY was also flooded for a reservoir Lots of interesting stories about that too!@
I live around here. Been hiking, fishing, and kayaking the Worcester County woods for forty years. There's great whitewater in Central Mass. Seen bear, moose, eagles, otters, loons, bobcats, owls, etc. Beaver are like field mice around here. I know dozens of places like he shows in his vid.
That was fun. Most of the abandoned places where I live that are a hundred years old or more have long rotted away, as they were mostly wooden buildings. Finding old concrete foundations and bridge abutments in the woods is pretty cool though. Cheers!
Really enjoyed this new video! The 1st property is so interesting. It must really be tucked away to be so untouched by grafitti. Curious about the headstones you showed. Did you check them out?
Yeah I was just there. The cemetery isn’t hard to find, right off 122 after the boat landing. Trail was hell and I almost got lost a few times, but well worth it. Didn’t see any ghosts but it was a really neat find.
I am confused that map at :50 is the path that leads to the Rutland Prison Grounds, but you later traveled north (going back to your car) to visit Rutland Prison Grounds? This means the map at the beginning is probably not right. I am curious to know where you actually found the abandoned ruins then if they are not actually right next to the Rutland Prison Grounds?
