Tunisian salt lakes 🇹🇳 (Chott el Gharsa & Chott el Djerid)

The Tunisian salt lakes are a series of lakes in central Tunisia, lying south of the Atlas Mountains at the northern edge of the Sahara. The lakes include, from west to east, the Chott el Gharsa, Chott el Djerid and Chott el Fedjedj. Chott el-Djerid, a salt-flat basin of about 4,900 square km, is covered with water only in the lowest areas, except after periods of heavy rains. Together with Chott el Gharsa and Chott el Fedjedj in Tunisia and Chotts Melrhir and Merouane in Algeria, the lake forms a depression that was formerly an arm of the sea and that extends nearly 400 km westward from the Gulf of Gabes.
