Thank you, sir! This is my first foray into OMV moving from TN, and I really like the simplicity of the UI and setup/config over the latter. It is a bit confusing to start with, but you simplified it well. Thanks again!
Came across your first video a week after deciding to move ahead with OMV7 for my diy NAS build, it was very informative. I sat down this morning to read the omv documentation on kvm and docker compose, opened youtube to play in background and found this video at the top of my feed! Hoping you can cover KVM in one of your next videos.
Just looked into KVM for Linux (specifically OMV). Wasn't aware of the term "KVM" outside of a keyboard/mouse switcher. So KVM is kinda like Cockpit? Is that correct?
@@DBTechYT Never heard of cockpit but after a quick read it seems as though they are both a type 2 hypervisor utilizing kernel based vm’s (hence term kvm).

Latest version of the compose plug-in [7.2.14] has changed some CLI commands. "docker-compose -v" reports "command not found". The new command is "docker compose version". I reinstalled twice thinking the compose plugin wasn't installing correctly... It was there, the syntax changed.

Hello...complete beginner to both omv(!/2/3/4 etc) and docker...this is a brilliant video and many thanks. How difficult would it be to make a video setting up nextcloud via docker on omv 7 ?
I've made videos about NextCloud in the past and... well... I really hate NextCloud. I try it about once per year to see if I like it yet and I just don't. If it's not being constantly maintened, it gets SLOW. Like slow enough that it becomes unusable. There are regular errors that pop up and the documentation on some of those errors is nearly non-existent. I know a lot of people like the service, but I don't think they could PAY me to like it.
Thanks for a helpful video particularly the steps of setting up a docker user. Im having problems with one of my containers and wanted to connect to a terminal on the container, I cannot see how to do this ? Could anyone give me some pointers please.
I think if using docker a lot, then using the 'global .env' from within compose plugin, ie tz, puid, pgid, and various paths, just makes docker so much easier.
Which would be fine unless you had a docker compose file that you also wanted to have specific credentials in for databases and that sort of thing. I think it would get messy pretty quickly. But, for lots of simple deployments, you could definitely do that :)
Both should work together. I also think a global and local '.env' option is in the next release of Dockge (whenever that comes out 🙂) For me it's the best thing about compose plugin, it just makes life easier, I suppose you could use symlinks for the paths, which I use when sshing in to OMV. But as we know, there is rarely just 1 way of doing anything when it comes to PCs.

You can definitely view logs and follow logs and even download logs, but there isn't a way, at least not yet, to do an exec console. I actually talked a bit more about some of the compose functionality in the 3rd video in the OMV7 playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLhMI0SExGwfBhVH47ouP59kEc0ahXmlpv.html
You can add a Portainer container on top of the docker compose plugin. Portainer doesn't get to control the docker container that way, but it can still provide telemetry and so on.

another very informative tutorial! this was very helpful as i just installed OMV and was trying to figure out if docker and compose were necessary to install outside of OMV, or if the plugins were adequate. But this leaves me with a question from your other video I commented on yesterday, about setting up the Cloudflare tunnels. Cloudflare provided you with a terminal command, including your token, that you pasted into the command line, and it did the work. How does this translate to OMV, using compose? Or would the command provided by Cloudflare still work as you demonstrated in that video?
you can deploy via command line like I showed or you can use the docker-compose on this page and put your token in place: dbt3ch.com/books/access-your-self-hosted-services-without-port-forwarding/page/cloudflare-tunnels-docker-compose
@@DBTechYT awesome, thanks for the fast reply! I was considering following thru both these videos as I've had a Squarespace domain for about 15yrs, so Id imagine I can make use of that, and create the subdomains through Cloudflare if i change over to CF nameservers as the other video described? Im not sure if you have an experience with SS and CF (the squarespace help pages say cloudflare is not needed, but SS cant do tunneling, so... theyr not equal for sure), but im just getting into this slowly as its all new to me, and I dont want to mess up my existing SS website by changing nameservers and such and accidentally creating some sort of discconection or conflict.
Once you've told CF that you want to use a new domain, you'll go through the setup process on their end and then they will tell you which nameservers you'll point your domain to. After the domains propogage, you'll be able to manage your DNS for that domain thorugh CF. I made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/Q5dG8g4-Sx0/v-deo.html It should give you a good reference to use
@@DBTechYT yup, thats the other video i was referring to. I havent personally looked at Cloudflare yet (created an account, etc). Ive just watched that video a few times to get familiar with the process. But i just wanted to be sure that Im creating/managing the subdomains on CF, and that they dont have to first exist on Squarespace.
Only the domain itself will exist on SS. Once you point the nameservers to CF, you'll manage all your subdomains and all your other domain-level DNS stuff thought CF.
docker-compose (27.5.1) OMV (7.5.2-1) (Linux Kernel 6.12.11-current rockchip64) dokuwiki deployment with Docker Compose is not working for me. Thanks. Unfortunately, I can't do videos about the *arrs. Made a video about it in January: ua-cam.com/video/JipFIrt3Pv8/v-deo.html And TorrentFreak picked up the story from there: torrentfreak.com/how-youtube-policies-of-the-future-affect-creativity-today-231216/
Do you mean Synology's "Download Station"? If so, I have to skip that kind of content as UA-cam's team of "experts" is likely to think it's promoting piracy and I'll get hit wiht ANOTHER community guideline strike...
thanks for the comment. I've answered the question about upgrading from 6 to 7 a few times already on this video. I don't have 6 installed because of how much I hated it. Also, I don't want to deal with the comments that will 100% happen like, "YOU RUINED MY SERVER BECAUSE OF THIS VIDEO". I've received a LOT of comments from people who can't follow instructions or who think that THEY don't need to run backups of their stuff before taking on a task like that. There are forum posts available out there that have instructions for those who want to do the upgrade. I'd start here: forum.openmediavault.org/index.php?thread/50649-successful-migration-from-omv-6-to-omv7/
What other method is there? Docker isn't hard to learn/use. Also, I'd likely get a community guideline strike for as I have with similar videos over the years.
@@DBTechYT I just needed some tips. But most YT channels don't want to give any info. They only want promote Docker and Proxmox VM. OMV had a sabnzb plugin many years ago. But now the don't have anything. Again, I'm just looking for info.
And videos about Sabnzb, Sonarr/Radarr/etc, qBittorrent, and even Plex are getting creators in trouble lately, so no one is making content about it here. You might check other video sites
You can map whatever folder you want. I just named it "Data" because that's the name of that section in the dashboard. I was just trying to keep it simple.
@@DBTechYT It might be useful to some users to set up using symlinks before creating docker containers and other storage mapping/rights/shares. I use it to simplify transitions to new hardware/installs. This way all my scripts, compose files etc keep working (too many locations to update without missing some :D )
pretty good tutorial, just learn to slow down when there is a lot of details to see and sort mentally. Also, the most needed docker tutorial is PLEX Media server.
You apparently don't know this, but that's the command to check docker compose. I even made this video specifically for you to show that I used the correct command and even demonstrate the command that you think I should use is wrong: ua-cam.com/video/iOKmfTTHMvA/v-deo.html
@@DBTechYT thanks. I tried to comment under the video... I don't know if you got it. I will post it here as well from docs at docker "Unlike Compose V1, Compose V2 integrates into the Docker CLI platform and the recommended command-line syntax is docker compose."
Updated. Also: hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/dokuwiki Honestly, this was me slowed down. It's been brought up so many times that I added this page to my website years ago: dbtechreviews.com/i-talk-fast/
SSH stands for Secure Shell. When you connect to a device’s terminal over a network you have two protocols for transferring that data: Telnet or SSH. Telnet sends data unencrypted, making it highly vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks where someone could read in plain text what passwords you’re using to authenticate to the selected device. SSH does much the same with the exception of encrypting the data as it passes between the two devices.
I want to use OMV as a NAS to store files as a back up, for no other reason. You keep referring to Docker as if it is a necessary part of OMV. For a complete OMV novice such as me this is very confusing as I am struggling to follow, especially at the fast rate you progress with (as stated, you talk very fast, not all of us have English as a first language). I suggest you splt your tutorial to firstly, intall basic OMV, and them install any add ons required. My menu is also different to yours, under Services I don't have Compose. Any idear why?
I keep referring to Docker because that's what my channel is about. You've left multiple comments complaining about this video and not understanding basic terms like SSH. Maybe you should use a different system. Maybe buying an inexpensive NAS is a better option if you only need a NAS solution.
@@DBTechYT "That's what my channel is about". The title of your video is "OpenMediaVault (OMV) 6 (Alpha) Setup and First Look". It says nothing about Docker. If that what your channel is about say so in the title and I would not have wasted my time trying to follow it. No, I don't want to buy a NAS. My project is to put together a NAS and get it up and running. I am sure there are many people out there with the same goal.
@@grahamefeltis6559 And you're the only one who has seen this video who has complained about including Docker. You're the only one who has any similar issue to this. Not every video is for every viewer. If you don't want to install Docker, then don't. It's just that simple. You can skip that part and move on. But I'm done having this conversation with you. If you don't know what SSH is, then you aren't ready to set up a system like this.
@grahamefeltis6559 Also, the title of this video is "OpenMediaVault 7: Step-by-Step Docker Deployment with Docker Compose Plugin - Episode 2". It's NOT "OpenMediaVault (OMV) 6 (Alpha) Setup and First Look". I do have that video, but it's not this video. Again, this video is "OpenMediaVault 7: Step-by-Step Docker Deployment with Docker Compose Plugin - Episode 2" ALL of the videos you've commented on have Docker in the title.
I appreciate this toturial, however this and some others that I have seen complicate and give terminologies that frankly make the whole process complicated, that is, I just want to use an old PC, to transform it into a NAS like Google Drive, but the number of steps and The steps you have to take are absurd, is there something simpler with just installation, username and password and that's it???
Any kind of self-setup for a NAS device like I've demonstrated here or what you're asking for with using an old PC is going to require a number of steps to set up. If you want something plug-and-play, you're likely going to just have to buy something.
@@DBTechYT Seriously? I thought it would be something simpler, plug-and-play to install on Windows, already with the disks and ready to go... in other words, I always have to buy a NAS, because I don't have much knowledge in this matter... Thanks for the answer !
The whole process of installing Docker makes no sense at all to me. Apart from the fact you talk very fast, almost to the point of tripping over your own words, it is not possible for me to do what you did as I have OMV installed on my NAS and I am accessing it via my windows PC. There is no connection between the two apart from being connected to the same wifi via my router. It would appear you are using the same computer to access both your NAS and Windows, I can't do this.
Connect to OMV via the dashboard web page from your windows PC's browser. When you need the command line, SSH from windows terminal to the server. It is _absolutely_ possible to do this; OMV is literally designed to be in a NAS elsewhere on the network from the PC you are actually using. In fact it's very hard to use OMV from the computer it's actually installed on; it's just not designed for that.

Thank you. 👍🏻👍🏻
you're great man!
docker-compose (27.5.1) OMV (7.5.2-1) (Linux Kernel 6.12.11-current rockchip64) dokuwiki deployment with Docker Compose is not working for me. Windows 10 Browser gives back "Page not found" (openmediavault.interal:8080) can somebody help? did follow video steps.... (uid=1001, gid 100), copied path as shown etc...
hello, i have a problem with ssh.
when i try to log in, it says permission denied. what now?
thanks for the tutorial. can i request for a omv 7 tutorial for photoprism? i can't get the plugin to work
Thanks. Good video. I'd like to see an arr stack (Sonarr, Radarr etc) with Jellyfin or Plex. I have a Zimablade. Trying to get away from CasaOS.
Thanks. Unfortunately, I can't do videos about the *arrs. Made a video about it in January: ua-cam.com/video/JipFIrt3Pv8/v-deo.html
And TorrentFreak picked up the story from there:

@@DBTechYT Darn. Did not know how draconian the rules were. Thanks for the reply.
Ages ago omv allowed you to deploy vms via the omv extras. It was bugging but I kinda wish they could have improved on it and brought it back.
Apparently there is a plugin called KVM that allows for that. I'm going to look into it and make a video about it I think :)
@@DBTechYT fingers crossed it's not buggy like the last one.
As a newbie to Linux / NAS found this very useful 👍
Any chance of showing a good download manager that mimics Synology’s equivalent?….
Do you mean Synology's "Download Station"? If so, I have to skip that kind of content as UA-cam's team of "experts" is likely to think it's promoting piracy and I'll get hit wiht ANOTHER community guideline strike...
After you install Docker, your dashboard is different to mine and I cannot continue. What is my next step to continue?
Can I ask why you added the Docker user to the groups you did? The official OMV documentation says only adding it to the users group is enough.
I was giving a demonstration. I also said in that segment for viewers to do their own research to find what groups they should use for their setups.
@@DBTechYT Makes sense. Thanks.
I know it's early in the series.... But do you have any plans on showing how to upgrade from OMV6 to OMV7... Just asking for a friend.😁😄
thanks for the comment.
I'd start here: forum.openmediavault.org/index.php?thread/50649-successful-migration-from-omv-6-to-omv7/
thank you
Could you show us how to install sabNZB on OMV7, without the use of Docker.
Hii, can you please make VM-s on OMV?
Why do you have to give the data folder when you "reinstall" docker? Shouldn't any folder work as a data folder like normal docker?
You can map whatever folder you want. I just named it "Data" because that's the name of that section in the dashboard. I was just trying to keep it simple.
@@DBTechYT It might be useful to some users to set up using symlinks before creating docker containers and other storage mapping/rights/shares. I use it to simplify transitions to new hardware/installs. This way all my scripts, compose files etc keep working (too many locations to update without missing some :D )
Is it ok if I create the compose folder in the SD card ?
That sounds like an awful idea, but you do you
Is it ok to install the omv-extras from the Plugins ?
You have to add omv-extras to OMV7 via the command-line. Then you can use the plugin. I cover all of this in the videos in this playlist.
@@DBTechYT Thx
I have no use for Docker. Do I have to install it?
Not if you don't want to
pretty good tutorial, just learn to slow down when there is a lot of details to see and sort mentally.
Also, the most needed docker tutorial is PLEX Media server.
7:33 you should use newer docker compose instead of docker-compose...
I will post it here as well from docs at docker
"Unlike Compose V1, Compose V2 integrates into the Docker CLI platform and the recommended command-line syntax is docker compose."
Hey, thanks for the video, minor comlaint, man you talk so fast LOL. Also am I blind or did you miss adding the link in the description for dokuwiki?
Updated. Also: hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/dokuwiki
Honestly, this was me slowed down. It's been brought up so many times that I added this page to my website years ago: dbtechreviews.com/i-talk-fast/
PS. What is ssh?
Please cover lxc and VM please
Can you be more descriptive in how you'd like to see it done?
Thanks for the answer !
hi teacher i want know install and config filebrowser on omw7 using docker
great video, but you talk too fast! I don't even have time to pause!
Honestly, this was me slowed down. It's been brought up so many times that I added this page to my website years ago: dbtechreviews.com/i-talk-fast/
Thank you!
