Hi Eric, firstly examine the main rope door seal when the fire is not lit, it may appear worn. When the fire is lit, the best indication is if air enters or escapes from around the edge of the stove door from the stove.
Most stoves in the UK are just small room heaters that people like as feature. I know people who have them and even their wood is stacked just for show. We also burn coal, so they don't have to be huge. Wish they were better made with easier to replace/make parts. If the model is no longer manufactured then it can be difficult to replace parts
