GAME 2 BREAKDOWN: bit.ly/TheReset2
In this episode of The Reset, The Kitchen's Jason Aspes breaks down GAME THREE of the Julian Arnold/Jessie Irvine vs. Matt Wright/Lucy Kovalova match (JOMBOY STYLE!) from the PPA Tour North Carolina Open, which was quite possibly the GREATEST Pickleball match in history.
This final game might very well also go down as the greatest Pickleball game in modern times. Intensely insane! 😬

after a while, you just know Matt is gonna jump at the opportunity to mock the "andiamo" if he wins, and I really hate that he got that satisfaction
I love the fact he got that satisfaction
Julian has a big mouth.
@@toddmathis7484 agreed. He's a nuisance
Yep. Matt hits the lady in the face and yells. Julian took it personally and Matt took offense to the fact that Julian fought for someone
@@JungSOh BS...Mr. Andiamo started the entire thing - wake up, what match are you watching?/!
Didnt want those two to win, but exciting match for sure
As the game grows the "personalities" will start to show as well.
It's going to be interesting.
Now that makes me want to go out and play some pickleball!!
Do it!!!! It's fun.
angry tennis player comments fueled by the fact that their courts are being converted to pickleball courts. I played tennis all my life and hitting a great shot in tennis is so satisfying, more so than pickleball. However the potential for many really fun points with amazing reflex shots and creative finesse shots is dramatically greater in pickleball. And finally, take a bunch of average athletic people to the courts....have one group play tennis and the others play pickleball and I can guarantee you the pickleball group will be engaged and excited while the tennis group will be frustrated at best. I would rather watch top tennis players especially in person. ( The men are "super human".) BUT I would rather play pickleball without a doubt. Tennis players....give it a shot. Your tennis net hands will get better after playing pickleball but it will mess with your ground stroke timing. Just my thoughts.
T Tank.
NICE RESPONSE.! you make great points, hitting brilliant shots in Tennis is a wonderful thing, the question is how many YEARS did you play before you could hit anything resembling a "good shot"??
As you pointed out, take 8 people off the street and let them play for a week, see how many drop Tennis and go to Pickleball....
That Matt guy seems like a real jerk.
Even worse is the hypocrisy.
Irvine was pumped but Matt crossed a line initiating an aggressive dialogue after game 1. Incredibly unprofessional. It clearly affected Irvine's game. I never saw him apologize, he even smiled when he hit Irvine below the belt. Not a true winner.
Agreed.
Norm is that you?
@@RazoJ20Irvine plays too much defense….she needs to be more aggressive….but the thing is her drives speed ups are on the weak side
Matt hit her in the FACE and didn’t even say sorry or hint at apology. Gross
Matt is a bitch dude. Twas very gross indeed. His whole vibe during the match was lame.
Yep. That’s what started the jawing
I never expect an apology because it’s part of the game. If I get hit, I don’t look for it nor do I take it personal. It’s not “classy” but it’s also not gross. It’s in in the grey area where it’s neither good or bad.
what a douche
Why, sorry? That's nothing. That's not even tennis ball. When I got hit all the time, I didn't want anyone to say sorry to me.
Andiamooooo!! :)
It would be helpful to viewers if there was a mark next to the names of the side serving.
ANDIAMOOOOO!! Julian choked every point down the stretch. Missed multiple dinks once at 9-10 to let Wright-Kov tie it at 10-10 then at 10-11 misses a dink to.go to a second serve then on second serve has a foot fault to give the ball back to Wright-Kov then on match point misses an easy overhead cuz he got no hops. Truly one of the best in the game.
What a game!
The referee in charge is at fault here. When the yelling and anger flared, the head ref should have called a conference with the two men and told them to tone it down or else there would be penalties issued.
Agreed. There's a point when passion crosses the line into poor sportsmanship. Both of the men crossed that line in my opinion.
I disagree, I think this is great for the sport. Heated rivalries are more fun to watch and I enjoyed this banter, but I do see where you are coming from.
I disagree...the job of a referee is to enforce the laws of the game. Not the tone of a game. If they are cussing at each other or some other violation of rules, then the ref should do something. But until there's a sportsmanship rule established, the referee has no place in that dynamic.
@@JustinPowellConsulting Rule 13.C.5.h. Maintain player conduct. In USA PICKLEBALL tournaments, the referee is empowered to call verbal warnings, technical warnings, technical fouls, and to forfeit a game or match based on a defined combination of technical warnings and/or technical fouls. The referee may also recommend an ejection to the Tournament Director. Justin, what does "Maintain player conduct" mean to you? Is it only when they are cursing at each other and throwing their paddles on the ground and smashing them to bits like John McEnroe? I would have warned them both. They have the privilege of good health, a fun sport, the chance to win money playing it and the joy of having others watch. I think what is so disturbing about the conduct in this match is that it broke several social pickleball norms with all the shouting and exalting with glee when one man won a heated point over the other man.
There are some other sportsmanship rules in the rulebook too, might want to take a peek at it.
@@briannorman6999 You're a weakling. The players' anger was pretty well suppressed and only came to an exchange off the court. During a tense game you're allowed to celebrate winning points. Staring at the other player isn't a rule violation either. The game is technical but also emotional like tennis.
I will be starting every meeting today with “on diamo”!
Rule 13.G.2.e. Any other actions that are considered extreme unsportsmanlike behavior.
Celebrating a point isn't that. Get good.
Andiamo!!
And Matt replies, "What, me worry?"
Andiamo... Italian for "I'm a douche! "
@@jeffupton2008 I agree, but then that means "c'mon!" is English for "I'm a douche." I understand how the occasional genuine shout is normal when one's adrenaline is up, but these athletes in Tennis and now Pickleball that scream at the top of their lungs all the time are really annoying.
I wouldn't want to play with or against either of those two guys. Yikes. I've never been so uncomfortable watching pickleball. They took it way beyond fun.
In a very competitive tournament its about winning... winning is fun
This is likely the outcome whenever a loud personality like Julian takes the court. While one of the announcers loved his behavior, it can't be defended as sportsmanlike. It ruins the game. Pickleball had to decide is it a classy or classless sport
Strongly disagree with Brian. People that take offense to that are the ones that lost to some, can't win, and got nothing but words to try to get one back. If the referee changed the game because of the passion of the game I would have started to say that ref was bias and is influencing the game to his own opinion and not leaving skill on the court for the winner. Cheating the game integrity would be approached. That rule is soo up to interpretation, and needs to be more specific and directly on an action if the game wants to enforce an attitude. If one can't take the heat of competition, go find your participation trophy from the city rec league where they don't keep score. Competition is what makes games great, and should never be squelched by an opinion from their own attitude.
Rule 13.G.2. Technical Fouls - The referee is empowered to call technical fouls. When a technical foul is called, one point shall be removed from the score of the offending team unless their score is zero, in which case, a point shall be added to the score of the opposing side. Actions or behavior that shall result in a technical foul (without a technical warning being issued beforehand):
Where was the technical foul? I don't remember.
Question for The Kitchen: neither team made use of a lob, curious to know why. I'm very very new to pickleball, thanks.
While lobs are being played now more than ever, they are still an “unconventional” play at the pro level.
@@Leaderofwhat Thanks, Jason. Appreciate your response. I've got a lot to learn.
The games design also makes it hard to lob effectively bc there's no topspin or slice for air pressure to drive the ball down. So if you lob it's gonna float.
Cuz ur a loser if you lob just saying
The lob is VERY low percentage shot.
Court is only 44 ft.
That's 22ft from the net each side to try and get a lob up n in..
To many things can go wrong and you "eat" one.
Matt's attitude is disgusting. He isn't showing passion, his celebrations are full of bitterness.
It's an emotional game...obviously, you don't play!
He's blatantly screaming at the opponent with 0 respect. Emotions are always going to be a huge part of a sport but respect always comes first, which he doesn't have at all. It's not obvious that I don't play, what is obvious is that I respect my opponent unlike Matt and apparently yourself.
@@rpochoa Respect..is earned and not just given freely - who started with the shouting of andiamo and more?/!
Rule 13.G.2.c. Making a threat or challenges of any nature toward or against any person.
When was there a threat or physical challenge?
And I think that last lob was going out if he had let it drop
Not long before this sport grows to the point that middle aged men will be pushed out. Good thing Matt Wright got in during the inception. Otherwise he would just be the best guy at your neighborhood court
6:43 wait the ball never touches the net, when Matt missed that hit,it airborne then dropped, I’m confused 🫤 😅😮😮😮
If you are going to run your mouth after winning each point you had better make sure you win the match. Julian ran his mouth, choked under pressure, and blew the match. ANDIAMO!
Can someone explain what the foot fault was for?
at around 7:30 his right foot was on the line when he hit the ball out of the air. So he was in the No Volley Zone or Kitchen when he hit the ball out of the air/volleyed the ball. You cannot hit the ball out of the air when you are in the "kitchen".
@@achien2079 Thanks!
Matt Wright is such a hatable character. Fat guy with quick hands. He’ll be obsolete at the pro level in no time now that new blood is coming in.
I'd take Mr. Andiamo out behind the wood shed, for sure!
I don’t know the game, but Julian can hit good flicks, he’s just not comfortably doing it all the time
Matt was beat in the noggin for surr
Tremendous "Douchebaggery" by the kid Jullian. Reminds me of that time my nephew was talking trash at the family croquette game on 4th of July weekend.
Matt was the asshole. Julian was celebrating originally and then got louder after Matt hit his partner with no apology. That was where the disrespect started.
I thought it made it pretty fun to watch.
Nice commentary, are you in love with Julian or is he just your hero?
Lol bruh
I am new to pickleball but totally turned off by the childish behavior. If the players can't figure out a way to act with some freaking class then the sport should mandate it in tournament play with some sort of no taunting or illegal celebration penalties like they use in the NFL
I think you are overstating your case, but I have noticed a change in the last couple of years. I used to love how all the pros were so courteous and friendly and even joking with each other, even in the middle of an intense match. Some of the new people coming in, and a few of the old vets, have incorporated significant mind games into their play, which I find repulsive. I did notice that Arnold applauded the winners after the game and was a gracious loser. Maybe he just has a higher emotional setting that is upsetting to us more stoic folk.
I hate the winner..like the green guy so fast
Just getting passionately into the sport and loving it. This is NOT the look the sport should be after. Where's the sportmanship, much less gentlemanly conduct while playing with women? Hit her in the face, "yup". Never raised a paddle or handle in apology, just "Yep". Where is his mother to come onto the court and slap him across the face?
Looks like fun, that is all. I got a Varsity letter in Badminton which everyone made fun of me for and it is ok, but I am not sure about this.
The Kitchen cam is stupid!! You miss a lot during a rally with this view!
TC is that you?
Only in a "sport" like this can you excel while being out of shape like Matt.
Yep, he’s a wannabe tennis player
@@jamesconroy2033 he played no 1 tennis singles at Michigan
You’re really not smart
@@grantharrispb further proves my point, he couldn’t go on the atp tour so he took it to the ppa and app lmaoooooo
@@TheKitchenPickleball let’s face it, it’s a game more than it is a sport
I like to play. I can’t get over how boring it is to watch. PB will grow a bowling size audience, at best.
Hey Julian....what's the Italian word for "CHOKE?"
Pretty darn good match but not the greatest , click bait title as usual, but top 5 of the UA-cam matches I’ve seen. Personally I feel both males behavior at times bordered on unsportsmanlike like behavior. Thankfully that’s not the norm, at least not yet.
Matt Wright is downWright NASTY.
I think Mr loud mouth got straightened out by Mr mafia
The women were really mature at least!!
Matt and Julian disgraced themselves with their behavior. It was such a distraction from the great pickle ball that all 4 players were bringing. Everyone loves competition and energy; but the disrespect, the raised fists, the yelling....shameful.
It’s a real shame that the bigger a-hole ended up winning. At least the other dude realized and stopped after game one. That Matt dude just kept going. Talk about poor sportsmanship. I feel bad for both women who had to sit there and watch this macho crap.
Why are you guys dogging on Matt and Lucy when Mr. Andiamo was every bit as in their face?
Trying not to say anything, but Arnold seems to me a bit of a jerk.
I thought Matt was a jerk when he hit it in the guys balls and just stared at him
Seems?!?
I love this game, yet I feel that the "andiamo" gentleman makes a mockery of the unwritten rules of etiquette and respect , and please don't tell me that is passion or intensity. I don't see these shenanigans either in tennis or golf. Not a likable character at all....
do they always play 1 male 1 female?
what an odd sport...
5:55
camera man wtf was that?!
Arrogance is unattractive; regardless of how talented a pickleball player might be…. 🤔🎈. Makes one look small, petty & spitefully self-absorbed somehow - dontchathink?…
.....here is my take. It's pickleball. Pickleball. They are getting that worked up over pickleball. Think about that for a bit......
This is a fantastic sport, and like curling people can play into their 70's. Great competition gets people excited. Good to see imo
WTF is pickleball
