Croy station was opened on 21 February 1842 by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway company, the first passenger railway between Scotland's two largest cities and it quickly became one of the busiest.
The station is an important transport hub on the eastern fringes of the Strathclyde region, allowing swift travel to either city for the local residents. The station is served by local buses from Craiglinn, Twechar, Kilsyth and Cumbernauld and, in 2011, work to expand and upgrade the car parking facilities was completed, creating spaces for over 900 vehicles.
In December 2017, electric trains began operating through the station on express services between Glasgow and Edinburgh, eventually expanding to services from Glasgow to Stirling, Alloa and Dunblane by December 2018.
In October 2022, the station became fully step-free after construction of an accessible footbridge was completed.
