Clear aligners are the way to go, in my opinion as a former braces-wearer.
Edit: Y’all I finished wearing braces and have a clear retainer.

As a dental tech with 33 years experience allow me to rant. Clear aligners (also known as shell retainers) are the worst for the teeth. They prevent irrigation around the teeth, concentrating acids and increasing the occurrence of caries. They cover the occlusion with an even layer of plastic, meaning the arch will feel closed in the posterior before the anterior, causing neuromuscular feedback to close the mouth fully and intrude the posterior teeth out of occlusion and leading to TMJD in the future. And finally as you point out they keep the teeth from moving in the vertical which is not a good thing, it prevents the final leveling of the occlusal plane into full interdigitation. Shell retainers were the last option doctors turned to until the 90s, and then only for short term use on determined patients. Then patent laws changed and the clear shell retainers with the teeth reset to ideal that had been used for years and fell under "common use" so no one "owned" them suddenly had a patent. Cease and desist letters were sent out to all labs in the US by Invisalign stating that no one (without buying into the Invisalign franchise) could make these , but no one cared because doctors hated them due the reasons above, but Invisalign had a different angle. They marketed them directly to the patients with ads, lots and lots of ads. Doctors resisted at first and patients went to find ones that would offer them. Eventually most relented and now it's just accepted by new graduates with, I assume, little regard for the issues because of the demand, and sadly I suspect the cost difference.

Agh, thanks for saying this, because I have clear ones that I wear at night and they always make my morning breath so much worse and my teeth feel gross after wearing them, even when I brush and floss really thoroughly and clean the retainers! I definitely prefer my wire one. Back when I was supposed to be wearing them full time, I just didn’t and only wore them at night because I couldn’t talk at all with them in and also taking them out in public so I could talk was super gross. Glad to have a professional confirm that I’m not just weird! 🤕

I had braces for 2.5 years and had so much work done to get my teeth straight for them to give me a clear retainer after it all. This was in 2005 (I was 15) and I had never seen one before. I wanted the one with the bar in the front. I thought it was common sense that the clear ones were not a great alternative. I could see my saliva all bubbled up in between the retainer and my teeth which not only looked gross but I felt that unless my teeth were impeccably clean, debris would just sit there.. AND THEY WERE SO THICK! This caused so many issues.. it was a little hard to speak and gave me a slight lisp, they clashed against each other (mainly on the front teeth) and caused discomfort and ultimately undoing all the work to correct my open bite, and the edges would scratch my gums. I hated them and barely ever wore them. Taking them out to eat was so embarrassing because they would just have a pool of saliva in them too. They suck lol

@@AiyetoroFeligrus Your teeth will move from the forces applied by your tongue, cheeks, lips and all kinds of other things for the rest of your life. If you can afford it, have new wire retainers made. If your dentist doesn't make them, call around and find one that will. Small movements can be made with a retainer if you've had movement. Yes, cavities are your biggest concern. Use fluoride toothpaste. Brush everyday before bed. Take care of your teeth, they will literally extend your life.

  • @pleighht
    @pleighht 8 місяців тому +35

as someone who has had all three in the past, here are the pros and cons of all
    clear aligners pros
these are great since you can’t see them and you don’t really audibly get a lisp if you have a top and bottom one
if you don’t wear it for a few days, (don’t suggest) but your teeth will move back to where they were within like a day, it’s just gonna be uncomfortable
    cons
it’s just a self discipline thing, you just have to be on top of yourself about wearing them
    og retainer pros
you can customize the acrylic and i always loved doing that every time i went
these retainers are the ones that i could really see the difference between when i wore them and when i took a few days off, which im pretty sure that means they were working well
    cons
you can see the wire in this one
causes a slight lisp for some not all
again, self discipline about wearing it
    bonded retainer pros
you can’t see this when you are talking and stuff
it doesn’t affect the way you talk
it’s on there 24/7 so you don’t have to think about oh shoot did i leave my retainer somewhere
you forget it’s even there after a few months of wear
    cons
FLOSSING! this attracts so much food so if you aren’t a flosser this is not it for you.
(people say the bonded retainers break a lot but i had one for like three years then i got it off for braces, now i have one about five years later again after Invisalign and i have never had trouble with it breaking or anything. mine has always been extremely sturdy and never broken)

Hi, my sis use to have the aligner but she got the squares of the other day, then she got the holly retainer with the glow in the dark colour, she says that it is very uncomfortable to sleep in and she has no room for her tongue (she has to just sleep with them on) also I recommend the clear aligner, way better then braces! I started to see her teeth straightening up in the first week

Towards the end of its 10 years, my bonded retainer was more glue than metal. Then a dentist finally decided no more glue and took it off - although like 3 years after that removal I went to a new (fantastic) dentist who discovered glue remnants on his initial assessment … 😬 Bonded retainers are definitely also the worst for hygiene!

Omg I completely forgot I had a bonded retainer at one point my life until watching this video. I was 12 when I got my braces off and it stayed in there for a a couple years. It was awful when it started coming off and the wire was poking me. I had to use that wax stuff to cover it until it finally either fell off. In retrospect I probably should have had that removed by the dentist since I could have easily swallowed it and potentially punctured something in my digestive system on the way out 💀

I have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth and I had a metal acrylic one.
But that kinda PULLED MY TEETH LOOSE AND MADE CHEWING INCREDIBLY PAINFUL FOR DAYS (I wore it 24/7 for a two months after getting it and tried getting it fixed but it still made me uncomfortable and in pain)
I HAD to stop wearing it because my teeth were so loose and I lost 5kg from not wanting to eat from the pain and inability to chew. That doesn’t sound like much. But I weighed 45kg before I lost it which was already super underweight for my height
