As a dental tech with 33 years experience allow me to rant. Clear aligners (also known as shell retainers) are the worst for the teeth. They prevent irrigation around the teeth, concentrating acids and increasing the occurrence of caries. They cover the occlusion with an even layer of plastic, meaning the arch will feel closed in the posterior before the anterior, causing neuromuscular feedback to close the mouth fully and intrude the posterior teeth out of occlusion and leading to TMJD in the future. And finally as you point out they keep the teeth from moving in the vertical which is not a good thing, it prevents the final leveling of the occlusal plane into full interdigitation. Shell retainers were the last option doctors turned to until the 90s, and then only for short term use on determined patients. Then patent laws changed and the clear shell retainers with the teeth reset to ideal that had been used for years and fell under "common use" so no one "owned" them suddenly had a patent. Cease and desist letters were sent out to all labs in the US by Invisalign stating that no one (without buying into the Invisalign franchise) could make these , but no one cared because doctors hated them due the reasons above, but Invisalign had a different angle. They marketed them directly to the patients with ads, lots and lots of ads. Doctors resisted at first and patients went to find ones that would offer them. Eventually most relented and now it's just accepted by new graduates with, I assume, little regard for the issues because of the demand, and sadly I suspect the cost difference.
Agh, thanks for saying this, because I have clear ones that I wear at night and they always make my morning breath so much worse and my teeth feel gross after wearing them, even when I brush and floss really thoroughly and clean the retainers! I definitely prefer my wire one. Back when I was supposed to be wearing them full time, I just didn’t and only wore them at night because I couldn’t talk at all with them in and also taking them out in public so I could talk was super gross. Glad to have a professional confirm that I’m not just weird! 🤕

I had braces for 2.5 years and had so much work done to get my teeth straight for them to give me a clear retainer after it all. This was in 2005 (I was 15) and I had never seen one before. I wanted the one with the bar in the front. I thought it was common sense that the clear ones were not a great alternative. I could see my saliva all bubbled up in between the retainer and my teeth which not only looked gross but I felt that unless my teeth were impeccably clean, debris would just sit there.. AND THEY WERE SO THICK! This caused so many issues.. it was a little hard to speak and gave me a slight lisp, they clashed against each other (mainly on the front teeth) and caused discomfort and ultimately undoing all the work to correct my open bite, and the edges would scratch my gums. I hated them and barely ever wore them. Taking them out to eat was so embarrassing because they would just have a pool of saliva in them too. They suck lol
I honestly couldn't wear mine. I would take them out in my sleep... then they'd be so uncomfortable the next day... I finally gave up. My teeth are still straight years later so idk 🤷♀️

In retrospect I probably should have had that removed by the dentist since I could have easily swallowed it and potentially punctured something in my digestive system on the way out 💀
I have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth and I had a metal acrylic one. But that kinda PULLED MY TEETH LOOSE AND MADE CHEWING INCREDIBLY PAINFUL FOR DAYS (I wore it 24/7 for a two months after getting it and tried getting it fixed but it still made me uncomfortable and in pain) I HAD to stop wearing it because my teeth were so loose and I lost 5kg from not wanting to eat from the pain and inability to chew. Omg I completely forgot I had a bonded retainer at one point my life until watching this video. I was 12 when I got my braces off and it stayed in there for a a couple years. It was awful when it started coming off and the wire was poking me. I had to use that wax stuff to cover it until it finally either fell off. In retrospect I probably should have had that removed by the dentist since I could have easily swallowed it and potentially punctured something in my digestive system on the way out 💀

Aaahhhhhh never fails😂😂
There’s also another kind where you can wear bands with them
YESSS THE "PUHHHHH" IS BACKKK
I have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth and I had a metal acrylic one.
But that kinda PULLED MY TEETH LOOSE AND MADE CHEWING INCREDIBLY PAINFUL FOR DAYS (I wore it 24/7 for a two months after getting it and tried getting it fixed but it still made me uncomfortable and in pain)
I HAD to stop wearing it because my teeth were so loose and I lost 5kg from not wanting to eat from the pain and inability to chew. That doesn’t sound like much. But I weighed 45kg before I lost it which was already super underweight for my height
Bro the “PUHHHHH” gave me a jumpscare
I have a permanent retainer and it is still standing strong even after 13 years.
The aghhh at teh starts gets me
