My heart goes out to those that have super dry flaky skin especially on the scalp I hope they’re getting treatments to minimize or hopefully get rid of that feaky skin issue but sometimes it’s just some thing that can not be completely controlled but what time hopefully it gets better or totally read it all together!
Not sure who else will find it helpful, but i dealt with my daughters extreme dandruff issues with hydrogen peroxide. She used to have extremely itchy ,flaky dandruff. Used all sorts of shampoos and medication with no results. Found that after having a pedicure, my nail fungus issues practically disappeared. Based on that , diluted 1 part of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts water and using a cotton ball, dabbed it all over her scalp, waited 5 min and washed it all off with water (no shampoo). Did it once a week for a month. No issues ever since.
Watch out when you guys use nizoral. It causes hair loss and thinning down the line and super dry hair! Be very cautious with it and don’t use it more than twice a week whatsoever. It’s better to have a little dandruff than to go bald after a couple years. Use lighter shampoos!
Btw I use ketoconazole shampoo in my case sobheric dermatitis on my scalp stopped ...it was too itchy, irritating and redness appeared along with too much dandruff so ketoconazole stopped dandruff and even stopped hair fall in my case. and i find it like a product from heaven as I got rid of my issue ..along with it I use conditioner or other shampoo but never use anti dandruff along with ketoconazole shampoo
This is because there are no conclusive studies on the actual cause of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) yet. Despite new research nothing conclusive has been identified as the cause so it is basically a guessing game on treating it. Though there is a correlation between malassezia overgrowth (type of yeast) triggering an immune response in certain people. However some studies do not support this theory. There are other proposed mechanisms of actions, including; 1. Impaired immune response to malassezia with a diminished T cell response. 2. Increased unsaturated fatty acids on skin surface. 3. Disruption of cutaneous neurotransmitters. 4. Abnormal shedding of keratinocytes. 5. Epidermal barrier disturbances associated with genetic factors. 6. Roles of Malassezia including consumption of fatty acids, distrusting lipid barrier on skin. The strongest evidence correlating SD and malassezia is the isolation of the yeast from SD scales and the improvement of symptoms after antifungal treatment. Around 3-10 in 100 people have SD and in the US it is slightly more commonly diagnosed in African Americans and West Africans which a recent study in 2019 highlighted (this was not recognised in past studies due to under-representation). SD was found to be one of the top 5 diagnoses in Black patients especially Black women which can be due to excessive use of oils and pomade on the scalp. Other risk factors include HIV, parkinsons, cardiac issues etc, and it is a chronic disease. Unfortunately doctors can only go off the current literature available in order to treat SD and there is nothing conclusive. I've had SD since I was 7, constantly picking, itching and riddled with scalp infections, swollen itchy scaly eyelids especially when stressed. I tried not washing my hair thinking it was ezcema and made it 1000x worse (I also have ezcema on my body and SD too). Cut out sugar and carbs (absolute torture imo) exercised, used antifungals, topical steroids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, tar shampoo, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, treated my allergies with immunotherapy (got rid of my ezcema but still had SD), probiotic supplements and shampoo, MCA oil (12+chains or something). It has been a constant annoyance to the point where I ended up studying microbiology in university, sometimes I want to shave my hair off to control the sebum. I've scouted Pubmed and Elsivier, read as much literature, meta analysis and studies I could access and there are only theories and suggestions as of now and treatment seems to be a very individualised process. The only relief I have is using antifungals and not stressing out (which is impossible for me) so I have just accepted to live with it and try and manage flare ups. Every treatment I have tried, I pulled from research papers with some efficacy behind them or doctors have prescribed (except the sugars and carbs one, read that on a blog when i was 14). Keeping the drying treatments only to the scalp and conditioners and oils only on the hair may help a bit too. Having routine check ups and ruling out possible autoimmune diseases is also very important. Sorry for the info dump, it has just affected me for so long its frustrating. Goodluck, I hope you find something that provides relief for your skin and scalp.
I was born with a bad case of cradle cap but it never went away no matter what my parents tried. I’m 19yo now and still have bad dandruff but it’s not nearly as bad.
What I've always wondered is how often you're supposed to wash your hair if you have dandruff since they say washing your hair everyday can dry it out...
mct oil may be good for dry scalp make sure it is without lauric acid, since lauric acid affects seb derm if you have that skin condition. since seb derm cannot mingle well with certain plant oils since it feeds off it.
@meowthchu7307 did not know that, so I don't kno if I have seb dermatitis only because the scales in my hair aren't huge ,but I do have alot of them and they are noticeable if u were to open my hair, now about the lauric acid, do you think it be better to use some type of butter like murumuru butter or bassuoil oil which contain some lauric acid, do you think it be better to only use them on the mid lengths of my hair before I shampoo??? I dont put any oil on my scalp at all ,my scalp is more oily then dry, I also am using t/Sal shampoo, I just bought it and after I noticed there wasn't scales at all after my wash but on the third day (i wash my hair every 4th day) I noticed there was alot bk again which is understandable since I only used the shampoo once, but just asking do you think that butter is okay to use since it's only on my mid lengths of my hair before a wash???? I would say wash your hair every day and a half. Don't use your nails or fingers to scrub in shampoo and slow the use of hair products that aren't just for cleaning but a scalp massager/scrubber a gentle rubber one is good and a plastic shower brick with round tipped plastic bristles make sure these things can't trap water and make sure you clean and dry them well after every use and keep them in a dry place when not in use washing your hair every day and a half like this should clear it right up
I wash every 3-4 days, essentially keeping it at 2 days per week, I still have flakes here and there, but it's not that bad, and I can control it pretty well. Also, use a conditioner that has coconut oil once a week after washing with shampoo
