When I've done tranny fluid changes on finicky cars like a Lexus that requires a non-shade mechanic tree method such as this one, I just drain the fluid when it's cold and put in the same exact amount of the new cold fluid.... works like a charm. The manufacturers are trying to scare us home mechanics into taking it to the dealer for service.
I agree, as I measure the fluid removed. When I can I use my infrared thermometer and or OBDIi scanner on newer cars to master newer methods. I purchased a scanner with the money I save from avoiding the expensive dealer. My growing tool collection pays for itself. 😀
If an 1/8" of fluid makes any kind of difference to the performance or the seal life, that is insane. Imagine the testing and exact measurements that would have to be consistently performed to come up with "1/8" below the fill plug"....
I’m about to attempt this on my 17 ss manual. Since my driveway is slanted a bit, you think I could measure what comes out and put that back in as an option? I’m just not sure how I’d be able to level the car on a declining driveway. And thanks for the walkthrough, very helpful with the pages to read.
I am a fanatic when it comes to being level. Until I had a lift I had a local shop do it. I would only trust the amount of fluid coming out if I knew it had been done correctly. I helped the mechanic at the shop do it correctly. They just assumed it was done by fill and spill. We had fun. They learned something new and I learned how much I love good mechanics.
The GM mechanic manual actually says to use the temp sensor to drain it lol. Reasoning is it gets most of it and to get the proper drain plug the proper way, they need to use a trans jack and take off the support member. They don't want to do that haha.
@@nevadarobert7908 for sure! I'm doing mine tomorrow so was just refreshing on the amounts to use. I did the differential a couple days ago and the fluid was horrible. Bought a 2017 SS with 97k miles. Previous owner said they changed it. Spoiler alert: they lied. It was the original fluid. Had a half inch of gunk/shavings on the drain plug. I'll probably change it again soon to get most of what was left in there. I'm now scared to see what the trans fluid looks like lol.
I don’t know a number of miles. My guess is if you never run your car car with easy slow shifts then 30-50k miles. I run 20 minute track days x 4 time in a day. Max 80 minutes running hard about 7 track days a year. No missed shifts. No grinding of gears. Changing the fluid is easy and cheap. The Tremec 6060 is one sweet transmission. My changing frequency is overkill. But if I wait until there is a problem then I am too late. I change every year. Cheap insurance

@@pali1H I assume the rear diff is an electronic limited slip? On my car a drain and fill is about 1/3 of the total fluid.
@@nevadarobert7908 eLSD is ZL1 and 1LE only. I have a regular SS. It's mechanical clutches essentially.

No sealant. No leaks.
If they put the fill in the correct spot to begin with we could probably avoid having to remove some after filling, just a thought
