  • Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad twin K28 coal burning, steam powered locomotives 473 and 476 double head to Silverton after being shut down for 41 days because of extremely dry conditions and a wildfire which had grown to more than 51,000 acres and was still burning in the wilderness area. 7/12/2018

    Wow! Didn’t know how much work went into this. Been on this ride twice before and had no idea. Often wondered how it turned around in Silverton? The whole ride is impressive. 👍 Thumbs up guys

    3:50 the fact people are protesting the train because of the fire. I mean, I can understand the train caused a huge fire, but come on, not a single house burned down or a single person died according to my Grandparents who live in Hermosa (10 miles north of Durango).

    Good to see them back. The train we rode (463, on June 1), is the one suspected of starting the fire. Only got to ride one way on my first visit. Therefore, I have to get back again---SOON!

      Just out of curiosity, what engine did you ride? (the one suspected of starting the fire)

      Train489 Official I don’t believe 482 was operational in June. It was not one of the engines that was stuck in silverton. I don’t doubt you, but I am curious myself. Thanks for the input. And like you said, 476 was running a lot in 2018, so I bet it was 476.

      Train489 Official ok. I’m trying to remember what engines were all in Silverton because I don’t think any returned.

    Those protestors actually think they are doing something! How pathetic,more people were out supporting the train. Type just made themselves look stupid. I bet they were like to other rail fans,”StOp SuPpOrTiNg ThE TrAiN,It CaUsEs PoLlUtIoN AnD FiReS,” and blah blah blah. It wasn’t even the railroads fault! Long live the D&G! Without the train,they would have their town or maybe even their lives. The train is why Durango is still a thing for tourists and why the town exists at all.

    Great to see steam operating again, usually they have 3-4 trains operating this time of year but I'll take two trains and a doubleheader over no trains. I rode the D&S last summer behind 480 and it was a trip I have never forgot.

      Neither engine had flags, only decorations. A regularly scheduled trains doesn't display flags. If they did, only the first engine would be so marked.

    Regularly, in June, the four corners region is prone to severe fire danger. During July and August, however, the monsoon season is very much in full swing. Therefore, the fire danger often lessens during mid to late summer.

      481 was wearing a D&RGW 5 chime (sometimes they wear CB&Q 5 chimes because they sound quite similar) and the 476 I believe is wearing a Pennsylvania railroad 3 chime (a very harmonious whistle in my opinion).

    Are they still doing the double header or was that a one day thing

    • @whitcraft4578
      @whitcraft4578  6 років тому

      They were running the second train as a double header but late Tuesday 7/17/18 afternoon a series of cloudbursts in the fire burned area caused mudslides washing out the D&S tracks north of the US 550 overpass and closing 550. Returning southbound #476 with 14 cars and 400 passengers were stuck north of the mudslide. Service resumed Friday with a double headed second train. Jerry Day reports that Monday both trains will be double headers with K28s as helpers and K36s as road engines.

  • @MPT_Productions
    @MPT_Productions 6 років тому

    What other engines ran that day

    • @whitcraft4578
      @whitcraft4578  6 років тому

      They are only running two trains a day maybe as a result of cancelations and fire mitigation. K36 #481 was pulling the first train in the video. K28's #476 and #473 double headed the second.

    Can somebody who knows steam engines explain to me just why on earth is steam pouring out of so many parts of an engine. I can understand out of the stack as exhaust and the whistle and the venting which is needed a couple of times a day but some of these 'boys' look as if they're in serious need of some riveting up..... Look at 5:52 for instance.

    • @whitcraft4578
      @whitcraft4578  5 років тому +1

      Hi Tom Tee, Thanks for watching and commenting. The steam I see at 5:52 is the safety has popped from too much pressure and the electric dynamo's exhaust. The packing around the piston rods leak when they are new and worn out sometimes. Cylinder cocks located at bottom of cylinders are open when an engine first start to blow out and condensation in the cylinders. A blow down of the mud ring lowers water level when needed and blows out mud/sediments. So calling them steam engines is appropriate.

      @@whitcraft4578 Yep and thanks for the info.... Gotta love these hissing billies whatever they do. Sadly I haven't seen a real living breathing one in more than 50yrs now. They scrapped them and nobody thought to keep the tourism appeal of them up into some of our beautiful country much the same as we see there in Colorado. Magic. Don't ever allow them to close down.

      The D&S running steam engines because they produce sparks. It's kinda silly but at least the people here were doing it peacefully.

      @whitcraft4578  6 років тому +2

      People have protested the train smoke, smell and noise for 30 plus years. Some would like it turned into a hike and bike trail. The latest was in response that the train is running again while still in stage 2 fire restrictions and the fire is still burning. Thus the tongue and cheek title to my video.

      I was there this past Sunday, and there were only three protestors. One showed his distain by flipping the bird to everyone on board as he rode his bike past the train in the opposite direction as we pulled out of Durango. I heard of a lady who wants to get the government to shut down steam operations. I'd wish her luck with that but I don't want that to happen, not that it will anytime soon.

      I only saw a young mom with a couple of small kids and older man and 1 or 2 others at the station. More people out there cheering and clapping in support of the train at the station. Must have been a few where train crosses main but I don't know if they were for or against. You can see them through the bridge shot. I was not at the station when the second train pulled out.

    just a simple idea in the summer or during a real dry season, Why not use a diesel electric engine till the dry season is over then go back to the good old steam engine

    • @whitcraft4578
      @whitcraft4578  6 років тому +1

      Hi Clifford47, actually the D&S has diesels but they can't reliably pull a full train to Silverton. So they have made plans to purchase two diesels that can and they are restoring one of their K37's, #493 to burn oil that should reduce the possibility of starting fires.

    • @t3swyatt798
      @t3swyatt798 5 років тому +1

      They’re converting one of their steam engines to burn oil so they can run but not risk fires. They’re using a Southern Pacific narrow gauge engine as a trainer
