Nice presentation, and sort of unemotional and factual comparison, leaving the choice up to the individual, without making one seem "better" than the other...
Everyone has their preferences. Personally, I like the sound of the RAV better. One thing not mentioned in the video is you sometimes have to be careful if playing a handpan in a sunny area. As the metal heats up it expands and can throw the instrument out of tune ( till it cools back down ). With a RAV you really don't have to worry about it ever going out of tune.. Just something to consider
I think I prefer the RAV as well. To me it sounds very relaxing and just as beautiful! Also the fact that it doesn't need to be tuned was a bonus in my head, especially after watching how handpans have to be tuned.
The hand pan sounds more nuanced, inharmonic, dissonant percussive and exotic, the totality of the effect is haunting, The tonged pan sounds more direct, harmonic, consonant, sustained and familiar, the totality of the effect is restful. The first is better for the spirit of exploration and adventure, the second is best for a spirit of comfort and safety. I would switch between both as needed depending on mood.
@@kingofallworlds I'm listening to timbre, just one note will suffice. different instruments have different qualities of timbre regardless of mode or key.

I get the rav's idea but the handpan to me has such a more natural sound than the almost mechanical sound to the rav. Even the overtones still don't resonate naturally like the hand pan does. The handpan has a smoother sound to me all together.
If you play a RAV less like a drum and more like you would play on a piano, hitting it with only the flesh of your fingertips and mainly on the end of the steel tongues the sound can be much more smooth and natural than demonstrated in this video where it is played more percussively. It also really depends on the model and series, when i compare the older RAV models in the same scale with newer ones they do sound very different and have other sound properties (i think the metallic sound is'nt as noticeable in newer models). I do like both though. In my opinion handpans have these deep hard hitting resonance on the root note to them and RAVs have this watery long slow buildup of resonance.

V = yWhWe ... There's something else behind the actual note on the Handpan that really sets it apart from the Rav, I was hoping it would be closer in tone, because I'm not rich! And I was about to buy a Rav, but the more videos I see I really want the Handpan. There's so many other noises you can make by hitting between the notes. And that sound behind the note is just so pleasing to me. Guess I'll be saving a while longer.
I love the sound of the original hand pan. I would live to own one. I would rather save up for it. I'll take the hammered over lazer cut any day. Sorry I hope I didn't offend anyone. It's just what vibes with me and what my ears like.
I have a handpan that I can play easily with my hands/fingers. I have a tongue drum I have to use mallets on. Is the Rav as easy to play with your hands as a handpan?
Yes, the handpans require regular maintenance tuning if they are played with force. Gentle playing should not take them out of tune, so it is possible to own a handpan and not need to get it tuned up. The RAV Drums almost always stay in tune except for in the case of extreme force being applied. Cheers!
Amo los instrumentos❤ Me gustaría empezar a tocar uno, pero no sé cuál.. Hay muchos, como el kalimba y pues la guitarra,el piano, ukelele, etc. El tema es que no sé cuál me vendría mejor ;-;

Thanks for translating!
BEAUTIFUL instruments and BEAUTIFUL sounds. ☺
Guess I'll be saving a while longer.
great into to these two thanks brother
Nice comparison. Good job.
I love the sound of the original hand pan. I would live to own one. I would rather save up for it. I'll take the hammered over lazer cut any day. Sorry I hope I didn't offend anyone. It's just what vibes with me and what my ears like.
I like the Hang better. Doesn't give me such a headache.
Well i like meditation quite a lot, thank for the insight. i'm off to buy a RAV drum.
I have a handpan that I can play easily with my hands/fingers. I have a tongue drum I have to use mallets on. Is the Rav as easy to play with your hands as a handpan?
Does the handpan ever need to be re-tuned?
Yes, the handpans require regular maintenance tuning if they are played with force. Gentle playing should not take them out of tune, so it is possible to own a handpan and not need to get it tuned up. The RAV Drums almost always stay in tune except for in the case of extreme force being applied. Cheers!
Really cool presentation bro.
Glad you liked it
Beautiful sounds and drums. Such a pity they are so expensive. Even the RAV, is out of reach for me, at the moment. Alas! Thx for the demo. 👍
I love these pillows!
Thanks buddy, very useful!
El tema es que no sé cuál me vendría mejor ;-;
I prefer handpan more because too much reverb could be annoying sometimes, handpan sounds more balanced.
Very groovy. Magical talent.
Thanks for this comparison.
Awesome review, thank you!
@Didge Project: Can you (or anyone else here) recommend a good starter handpan? I'm looking for something under $500 but still decent quality! Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give. And thanks for the awesome video!
@@cubicfilms3200 Thanks mate, that's super helpful.
@@cubicfilms3200 Awesome thanks, I was just about to ask if you had any recommendations after seeing how many different places are actually making them. What do you think about the 12" vs the 9" Kosmosky drums? Is there a big sound/tone difference?
Very helpful & informative video. Thank you.
I like your ..taping sound on those pan...
very cool... .brother
Both of these are inspiring. Thank you for explaining and demonstrating them. QUESTION: Can these be made and sold in deep baritone tones?
The E low pygmy rav is the lowest we’ve seen of rav
Has the "E Low Pygmy" RAV been demonstrated here?

This is an awesome video - so interesting. Thank you
Very cool comparison. Cheers. Can they be tuned to any scale potentially that player would like prior to purchase?
