    Those bins from Tractor Supply look great! Currently we stick all the dog food in a tote in the bag ... but it's a pain to get that open, then fuss with the bag. We considered getting at least the smaller plastic cereal containers to keep filled upstairs for easy bowl refilling. However, for downstairs storage these look awesome! We have four poodles, and get our food from Costco. We were giving them Purina, but one in particular liked to literally sort through her food for all her favorite bits, LOL! She made a horrible mess every time she ate. We would have to go in and use a little hand broom to sweep up all the food she'd flicked out of the bowl with her paws. At least the Costco food is good, they enjoy it, they're healthy, and they have no digestion issues eating it.

    Hi Bailey, I wanted to say hi from the Netherlands. I was curious if you had considered other dog food brands like Orijen? I have been researching dog food for months now and was unpleasantly surprised at the ingredients and quality of the large food manufacturers.

    • @laurenmichero9003
      @laurenmichero9003 2 роки тому +1

      Same here. Not sure what’s available where you are but I’ve also been looking into a local company (Muenster), First Mate, and InukShuk. The last two are Canadian brands and they seem to have higher quality standards than many in the US do. Here we also have freeze dried options that you can order and we even have pre-cooked meal subscriptions that are mailed to you every month or two. Kibble is typically cooked at high temperatures which not only strips away a lot of the nutrients…it also causes carcinogens to form. At least some brands like Muenster cook there’s at a lower temp, however I may be leaning more towards the freeze dried and pre-cooked options because they seem like they maintain more of the nutrients. Also look for human food grade and not feed grade. One of the owners of Muenster actually ate only their human grade foods for an entire month. They have a video online and it’s really interesting to see his dog food journey lol
      I’ve also heard great things about raw but I simply can’t do it. The potential for bacteria as well as the “ick” factor make that option a non-starter lol
      Hope this helps 😊

    • @naomivanderhelling5770
      @naomivanderhelling5770 2 роки тому +1

      @@laurenmichero9003 Thank you for the recommendations. I checked the ingredients and protein contents for all three and they are much lower for the listed brands than Orijen. Theirs (Orijen) is 85% protein and at least two thirds of it comes from fresh meat and they also use very few nutritional additives as they choose to have most of the nutrients come from things you and I recognise as food (LOL). I'm going with this brand instead of raw because as you pointed out there is a huge "ick" factor, but even beyond that if for whatever reason Maxwell needed to be looked after by someone else, I would be worried if they were following the instructions I left for his food and being safe. I really don't need anymore dog mom guilt if anything were to go wrong and he wasn't getting the proper ratio's.
      I am now just counting down to the 12th of March, when I will pick him up from the breeder in France (This is an 8 hour drive for me) and finally get to see his cute face in person. By the way, He's a black Moyen Poodle. I know the AKC doesn't recognise this size, so I guess he would be considerd a smaller sized standard poodle.

    • @laurenmichero9003
      @laurenmichero9003 2 роки тому

      @@naomivanderhelling5770 Orijen is a great brand. I have heard that freeze dried and slow cooked prepared meal options maintain their nutritional values a little better than kibble in general, but Orijen is highly respected and definitely one of the better quality kibble options out there.
      Raw is supposedly “best” but, like you, I just can’t handle it or have any pet sitter handle it either lol.
      I also have a poodle! He is a 6 month old toy poodle puppy. I was always meh about poodles but OMG I love them now!! They’re so sweet and smart. You’re going to love your new poodle. That’s so exciting and congrats. You seem like someone who cares a lot about your fur babies so I would also look into vaccinations and spay/neutering. I know spay/neutering isn’t as prevalent as it is here in the US, but I’ve learned so much about the benefits of not neutering and not over vaccinating dogs. It’s a sensitive subject and you may not agree with my stance, but I’ve been watching videos from holistic vets like Dr Becker on UA-cam and it’s been really eye opening. All I would say is do your research because I’ve learned so much. You probably already know a lot too, but, like you, I don’t want to have regrets or mom guilt. There are so many choices let owners have to make that are so consequential. I have two older Yorkies that have their own health issues and I think it’s because of their breed but also spay/neutering and over vaccinating. I’m all for vaccines but you can get Titer tests to see if they actually need them or if they can wait longer than typically recommended.
      Anyway I applaud your attitude towards doing right by your dog and I know you’ll fall in love with poodles. Mine is 6 months and he knows like 14 tricks/commands already. They’re incredibly smart…2nd smartest after Border collies 😳

    • @naomivanderhelling5770
      @naomivanderhelling5770 2 роки тому +1

      @@laurenmichero9003 Again, thanks for the recommendation. I usually stick to the vaccination schedule, but I'm open to other perspectives, I'll look into Dr Becker. I will also research the neutering as this is not something that really ever comes up when speaking with the vet. I always thought it was a policy to prevent stray dogs in the US and as stray dogs don't exist here I never looked into that.
      The fact that Maxwell is from a smart breed has me a bit nervous, because they of course can learn bad habits really quickly. Hopefully my training schedule will yield a calm confident dog who enjoys trick training :)

    • @laurenmichero9003
      @laurenmichero9003 2 роки тому +1

      @@naomivanderhelling5770 they are a very smart breed and can pick up good or bad habits quickly. My poodle knows 14 individual tricks and then does some variation of those as part of a sequence of tricks. My Yorkies know maybe three tricks and they’re 10 years old lol. He picked up potty training fairly easily with the training pads. I think the best way to train them is with positive reinforcement and consistency. I’ve heard they are an especially sensitive breed and eager to please so scolding for bad behavior will only upset them and may cause setbacks…but congratulating them and rewarding with praise or treats will reinforce good behavior and they will want to do it more often so they will please you…& get the treat too lol
      They are very attached to people and so he will probably follow you around. They can sense our emotions and they are prone to separation anxiety so you may want to start slow when leaving him and only go for short trips. I have even consulted with a trainer here about several of these things and he basically said it just takes time.
      They love exercise (like walks and fetch) but they also love mental exercise like brain games and puzzles and snuffle mats (fabric puzzles where they sniff out pieces of kibble).
      If he eats quickly then you can use a lickimat (soften kibble and spread it on top) or a Kong (put the kibble inside as is or put a little water with it and freeze the food in the Kong).
      I’m sure I’m forgetting something important about the breed but that’s all I can think of for now. Hope it is helpful 😊

    You might want to consider getting bigger balls. With the size of your dogs, those chuck-it balls are too small and a serious choking hazard. Same with a tennis ball or any other ball that general size. The number of posts from owners and vets about dogs choking on balls that size is astounding. Would hate to see anything happen to any of your dogs.
