Zack Snyder's Justice League VFX Artists on a New Steppenwolf and More

- With the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max, I recently had a chance to talk to three of the VFX artists who made the new cut a reality: Visual Effects Supervisors Kevin Andrew Smith and Anders Langlands as well as Animation Supervisor Simeon Duncombe. To realize Zack Snyder’s vision, these artists not only had to redo footage that had been released in 2017, but also to complete visual effects for scenes that had been shot in 2016/2017. This in addition to a new scene that was shot specifically for the release of this new cut.
During our conversation, we discussed what went into the new design of Steppenwolf, how they handled Green Lantern in the big flashback battle, putting Darkseid into the movie, how they altered the previously all-red third act to fit with Snyder’s vision, how they put together the new epilogue scene, and more.

How does pandemic affect work indoors and on computer though?
@@TheWartechgaming Working from home do come with a lot of challenges. I work in the gaming industry and so dailies, catching up with teammates, clarifying doubts, resolving issues and all take more time. Zoom calls or teams meetings help but they are never as efficient as being able to do the same thing in an office. At the office interacting with others is much more easier. Everything goes more smoothly. Thats what i meant.
@@bloodthirstyworks yeah, I work in a game studio too, but it's not that much of a problem for me. Thah could be because it's my first time working in this industry though

@@bloodthirstyworks a 3d artist, just a small mobile game studio since there are not many studios here in my country. I wanna transition to movies one day but there's no vfx studios here so gotta get my foot in the door first

At one point it did not exist. And it only existed later because WB gave Snyder 70 mil to finish it.
It existed but in an unfinished form. Snyder had to spend 70 million for VFX and 4 minutes of Joker Scenes

Let’s just take a moment to give much deserved respect and credit to these guys that really make the magic happen in these movies!! I imagine the VFX for a movie like this is already pretty demanding but having to work remotely because of covid caused new challenges, but it sounds like everyone really stepped up to finish this film so we could enjoy this and see Snyder’s original vision brought to life. Awesome work from this crew thank you to all of the team that helped make this a reality!

For one he didn't have a WETA team that could make the old design look good.
Clearly, they could even make the other design look good (!)
The previous design resembled the rubbery action figure CGI in Marvel's "The Incredible Hulk". Detailed but without any convincing 'performance'.
I can guarantee you the Weta team could have even made the Whedon design look good.
WB just didn't have them on board, for whatever reason.
@@awril2137 I think WB wrote off JL as a loss and basically brought in Whedon to throw this universe in the garbage. That's why all the Cyborg stuff was gone and why all of the setup for future movies is gone.
These guys are one of the heroes along with Zack in finishing the full vision of the film.

The VFX in ZSJL looked amazing, it just looked so... organic. Hats off to the whole VFX team. We love you. lol
So happy to see an interview with the people who put together these awesome effects. I feel like they don’t get enough credit for what they were able to accomplish during very strange times. The entire redesign of Steppenwolf is something to marvel at.
All I hear about everyone in the movie is Zack is very clear about his plans. Dude sounds like a genius. 👌
if you're interested there's watch parties on youtube for both MOS and BvS with Zack Snyder going into detail on what he was thinking, what implies what, a lot of insight as to what it takes to make a scene. Very interesting videos, can't help but respect him from what I've seen.
You can see the sheer joy in their faces talking about their work and comparing it to what they did in 2017. You can tell they really loved working with Zack.

I loved his 7 finger hands.... I was like WTF... Lol.. Especially that Superman slow-mo dodge. Also the Themyscira scene when he flexes to snap the arrows from his armour.
Good fucken job! Both Steppen wolf and Darksied looked badass and terrifying.

CGI is only as good as the director planning the shots & lighting. We can only hope Snyder works with Weta again! x)
CGI complaints are so blasé and cheap, in jl its clear how intricate and artistic Zack and the vfx team want to make it, it often felt like a moving painting, the shot of Wonder Woman above Steppenwolf is gorgeous, I kinda hate how the soundtrack spoils it, the Steppenwolf armor constant movement made it feel so tangible

The Amazon theme is one of the best thing in ZSJL imo, I actually don't know how one could not be thrilled by such an amazing vocal, it gives me goosbumps each & every time xD

Like everyone else already said they are all busy now shooting other movies. In 2017 their contracts basically forced them to do promo for the 2017 version. They don't have a contract now that says they have to promote Zack Snyders Justice league. Some of the cast only came back to quickly shoot some little scenes because they consider Zack a friend and did it for him and the fans but that's basically it. Ben,Gal, Henry, Ray and Jason supported the release the Snyder cut hashtag on their social media.

Darksied was walking like he's got a limp. He walks with his arms behind his back in the comics and animated series.
I hate that this isn’t going to be on the physical release of the movie. Better breakdown of the vfx than what we will probably get.

Watch the end of the final ACT of Batman v Superman, and you'll see the same SteppenWolf character with Lex in the Ship
@@explodingrubberducky797 I've seen that bit and I understood Snyder had his Steppenwolf designed before and during working on his cut of _Justice League_ before until WB saw his rough cut. I was just asking if any of Snyder's Steppenwolf shots were done and rendered before WB told him to have Steppenwolf redesigned. Because if if they had to redesign Steppenwolf to his original Snyder design and re-render all those shots for the Snyder Cut in the amount of time they had, I'm surprised they made it look THAT good in contrast to how bad Whedon's Steppenwolf looked when they only had 4-6 months to finish it all for the 2017 release.

Well we should thank god that Joss Whedon's gaze didnt landed on this design of Steppenwolf. Imagine this version in Josstice League... it would've been total waste!
People on the set said that Joss preferred this spikey design, but WB didn't allow him to use it.

Honestly given how much work they needed to do I think the standout performance was Steppenwolf, in this version.
So it really is a matter of WETA saving the Snyder assembly cut, and turning it u to a finished, presentable Film.

After some thinking i was kinda hurt that barry was older than cyborg in the movie and he didn't act like it at all instead you think cyborg is older or they're age mates
But I still love the movie and barry, they should just make barry more mature and fun

I hope it proves a success. How do we find out if it's a success as there's no box office to speak of. Maybe they'll consider seeing Zack's JL Part 2 movie through, or at least some form of adaption of it, be it animation, or even comic book.
