A child learns the language of the country he or she lives in within the first few years of life, an adult living immersed in a foreign language should be able to learn the language in their new country of residence also in just a few years unless they have severe disabilities that bar them from learning.
Iceland has had this practice of learning the language for citizenship and theyre barely involved in geo politics, but recognize their culture would be diluted and destroyed without such requirements

I completely understand the feeling but I don’t think this is the way to go. Much of Ukranians from my understanding are Russian speakers at least a big portion many Ukranians speak Russian who love their country but also speak Russian. In Odesa Kharkiv Donestk Luhansk most people speak Russian I think its unfair on the population to crack down on the language. By all means in public schools require students to learn Ukranian and make it the main language but I think there’s also freedoms and liberties that should be allowed I think there’s also going it be too far cracking down too much because there are whole cities and regions in Ukraine that speak mainly Russian it risks alienating those people as well

Great documentary. The "rusky mir" is real and can be latent among russian speakers in Latvia. Russian language is like tool for a dormant agenda that suddenly can be triggered , or like an innocent property that under the right circumstances can be weaponize for a psychological warfare to further the agenda of " rusky mir". I couldn't understand half of Laimas Vaikules comments. Also 80 year old's don't have to take basic Latvian language test. Second thing I coldn't understand is comment from other lady, wher she spoke about what it takes to be Latvian and changing teritory trought thousand years. Also she spoke about latvian refugees in past. Actually in many countries where Latvian refugees arrived in past, locals weren't that happy and welcoming, many Latvian refugees needed to earn their keep and place in new societies themselves. There where case where Sweeden didn't take Latvian refugees anad returned them to Soviet occupaying authorities. Latvian history is ugly and dark and we do not wish it to anyone. Newcommers to Latvia, if they want to live and work here, shoud learn our languge, learn about our history and culture, and shoud respect our society and country. Soviet immigrants and Russians shoud learn Latvian language (or Latgalian, or Livonian, or Latvian sign language) or leave us.
Swedish government did a lot of bad to Latvian refugees when they were fleeing from communists. I think it was because there was a lot of communist and Moscow influence in Swedish government back in the time. Now the times have changed. I know families who did risk their lives to cross the Baltic Sea in 1940s and 50s to find safety in Sweden. At the time there was not much help from Swedish government, but there was selfless huge help from local simple Swedish people. Thanks to them Latvians could find peace home and work in Sweden durring the soviet occupation in Latvia. When ever I go to Stockholm I am welcome Latvian/Swedish family. They speak Swedish they do not need Latvian language in Sweden, but all of them still know Latvian language. Even though it was only great great grandmother who emigrated to Sweden. Her daughter born in Sweden and Swedish husband and their kids practice Latvian language as heritage. They are proud of their roots and their Swedish relatives deeply respect that.

I do not remember during WWII which Soviet commander ( maybe Zhukov)said after they entered Berlin that the West would NEVER FORGIVE that the Russians defeated the Nazis. Now I see and understand what he meant by that.
Nah, we just never forgot that it was the Soviets who helped the Nazis in the first place. The Soviet Union attacked Poland, Finland & The Baltics as part of the Nazi-Societ Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The West defeated the Nazis, but they forgot to punish the Soviets.
were the camps there mixed? i mean did the poles, estonians, latvians and others were sent to the same ones or were they mostly separated? if great mixing occured then probably they used the common languages such as russian and german at the time to communicate. my impression is that latvian and other jews were sent to camps mostly within the country such as the one in salaspils and of course ghettos in daugavpils, riga and liepaja. they were separated from other latvians that practiced other traditions.@@karliskokorevics6902

It's not even accurate. Latvia was under an illegal occupation, Republic of Latvia (1918-today) is not connected to the Latvian SSR (1940-1990).
Our government must be free of subjects like Ždanoka, Ušakovs, etc.
