Hi Bob, thanks for another great lesson, I think I will learn all three versions of the song. Adding seperate layers to the picking pattern will in my view, will create a solid foundation for learning the song.
Hey Barrie, thank you for taking the lesson and letting me know you are going to mix and match! It is some work to arrange this but I consider that the fun part. Have a great guitar week and I'm glad you are pickin' away!!
Another fantastic lesson Bob really appreciate all the time and effort you put into these lessons and I’m so happy you introduced me to plug and play I’m having an absolute ball learning new songs with the pattern and finally I would like to wish yourself and your family a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year all the very best wishes David
Hi David, I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am that you are applying the plug and play process. This is true musicianship!! I am going to have to do another video explaining the process again (only simpler this time) as I think a lot of the students are still not using their ears. The whole key is to be able to count out the measures and know when the singing comes in. Can't even begin to tell you the joy I had reading your comment! Merry Christmas and happy new year to you too David ***** 😀🎸
Good morning, Bob! Thank you for making your inspiring lesson for Forever Young, one of our favorites by Bob Dylan. I appreciate your three levels and will begin with level one (but once I get going, may mix and match). Oh, Haha! Love those "hippie chords." Big smiles! It's a big help when you mention the string numbers, thanks. We sincerely appreciate your thoughtfulness and hard work on the lessons. We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday season. Blessings to you, today and always!

Hi Bob Thanks for another great lesson. I hope you and your family have a really happy Christmas and a great New Year. I try all the levels, even if the beginner ones are a bit easy. I still do them.

@@cheekyguitarmusic-laughteryoga Hi Rikto! Sounds like you have "guitar addiction" which is a good thing! It's always from my experience the person that is the most enthusiastic that is able to get very good on the guitar... and it doesn't matter when you start as long as you love playing. I think in many regards the advanced age as you call it is to your advantage as we can become wiser with age. I have a lot of courses with study guides that are free to my guitar group that I would like you to be in. It's free and you can e mail me and I will send some courses to you. I don't know how much experience you have on the guitar but the fingerpicking courses are from the beginning covering all the details. The pattern I am using on this song Forever Young is one of the patterns that I cover in great detail from a few of my earlier courses. If you are having any issues with the chords here, I also go over that in great detail. Just e mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com and I will send them to you! Great lesson, like always. Since i follow you already a few years , playing this song is not so difficult anymore for me . But certainly i start with level 1 before going to lesson 2 and 3. I like to go back to the beginning , to repeat the basic elements. Happy christmas and a fine new year to you and your family. Ernie
Hi Eurnie, Sounds like you are doing very well on the guitar and I'm excited that you are picking things up so quickly. This is great news. The level 1 is really very good even though it's the easiest but it's going to be very easy for you.. hey, wasn't that long ago when it wasn't!! Happy Christmas to you too but I will probably chat with you before! Thanks again Eurnie!
Hi Bob, Very nice song that touches me and it's not so hard to play. But the most difficult issue is to sing and play it at the same time. Hope to hear it from you on a video someday.
Hey Paul, I can do one better than that.. I'm working in the studio right now but I'll e mail you with some help with that. Some of the other students requested the same thing and they said what I sent helped. Back with you asap! bob
Great lesson from a Master teacher. I will be learning all three levels, as I like to mix it up, even throw some strumming in occasionally. Merry Christmas Bob. btw, I had a great time with my nephew, Avram Siegel over Thanksgiving, and your name came up. GT
Hey GT, many thanks for your kind words and very happy that you are going to "mix it up" .. This to me is the thrill of music which allows you to do some musical arranging. I love that you are also going to add strumming!! Glad you had a great time with Avram- ha ha, hope he didn't say anything bad about me. Have a great Christmas G T and well chat soon!
Hello again Bob, you asked what level we chose to learn this song. I compared the 3 at length by putting the different parts in colored blocks, as I usually do. At this point, my favorite is 3, Travis style. I feel more comfortable with it and I like the sound of it better. Speaking of TG, I forgot that the capo in 2 was not taken into account.
Hi Viv, you are the first person to tell me about liking #3 better. We had that pattern (sort of) as you know so I don't think it will be too hard. Hard part is the chords I think. You can of course put the capo anywhere on the guitar. Happy week Viv!!
Hi Bob! I learned the way to fingerpick this song from your lesson a while ago and I often come back from time to time to review. I used to strum it in the key of D, but to fingerpick it with a capo at Fret 2 in the key of C, I often forget the "hippie" chord (Am7b13) (I don't know much music theory well enough to name such chords) in the place of F as I thought it would be with a capo. It sounds great, the hippie chord and your rendition is firmly in my repertoire since this song is one of my favorites by Dylan. I didn't venture to try levels beyond the 1st, by the way, as I like the 1st level's simplicity. Thank you for this great lesson!
Hi Gech Li, it's great to hear from you and really happy that you are still playing this song. Sometimes I forget what I did in the videos and didn't know what you were talking about with the "hippy chord" and then I watched a little bit and saw what I did... There's no way I'm gonna remember what the name of that chord is other than the hippy chord LOL)... BTW, there's so many alternate names for the exact same chord- it's so confusing and you can spend a whole lifetime learning about it.. or just play..🤠 There's so much music to be played in Level 1 as that pattern can do so much. I will bet that you are playing it close or near up to speed by now, as it's easy to go fast with this pattern. I am about to do a Christmas song here on UA-cam... a beginner version... It's been a while since I've done anything here! Wishing you all the best and thanks for writing to me!!! happy pickin' !!
Thank you, Bob, for your well wishes! I will be looking forward to receiving notification about your new video. I remember another one of yours that left a strong impression on me--it's about how to increase the picking speed gradually and in it you humorously lift a "gigantic" weight. For retiree learners like me, agility and speed are challenges, and it takes longer time. Thank you!
@@gechli3433 Hey Gech Li, yes, I can't wait to get back.. only wish the videos didn't take so long to make. That video you are referring to was a lot of fun to make, but the point being that moving up the click doesn't count unless you can play it cleanly. So really the speed is not as important, especially now that my age is accelerating faster than my guitar speed... LOL... Do let me know if you get stuck. Always a pleasure to chat with you...
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons That "weight lifting" video was a source of frustration to me at that time, lol, seeing you effortlessly moving up the click with such clarity of sound while I felt it would take me forever to move up one increment. But I have come to terms with my limitations. No I have not given up--I just feel content with any progress I have made. I am still not fast but, looking back, I do see I have come quite a long way from the early days of struggling with chord changes. Thank you for your help! I will let you know if I have questions.
@@gechli3433 I probably should have included the "40 years to get there" part... 🤔 I have stuff I'm working on now I call "works in progress'- call them long term goals. One of them is a picking style called double down that has eluded me for 8 years now. I can play it slow, but as soon as I start to raise the tempo (even a little bit), I just can't seem to get the cadence correct (and this is after years of extensive metro training). So everything you said is exactly me as well, and I couldn't have said it any better. What you find out through all of this is what you're good at and what your not. The "what I'm not good at" goes into the works in progress pile... At some point, maybe I will get it.... lol!!!
Hi Bob, thanks. You've got a very patient way of teaching not throwing in too much at once. The only thing I'm not sure of is what version of Dylan's it is as some have the long chorus and some just a gentle "forever young" so I'm not quite sure how all the words fit with the measures. It's not your fault, there's probably a very simple answer but I'm obviously missing it! Thanks again.
Hey DC. thanks for taking this lesson. Always loved this song and I'm glad you are learning it. This is the version of the song ua-cam.com/video/Frj2CLGldC4/v-deo.html (i'm pretty sure this is the original )n. I wish there was an easy answer with putting the singing and the guitar together. I just worked 1 on 1 with a student online doing that very thing, and it took a couple months but he got it- everyone's different. The basic overall way to do it is to memorize both vocal (singing and words) and guitar separately and then join the two together. I found this : www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/121426/Product.aspx . Another place has a lead sheet (chords above lyrics). dylanchords.com/14_planetwaves/forever_young The song is in the key of D (same as we are doing except we are playing in the C position capo 2). Did this to avoid having to use an F#m/C# barre chord. See if any of this helps... It's hard to figure out just where you are getting stuck by typing back and forth. Wishing you all the best with this!!! bob
Thanks for such a comprehensive reply, it's good of you to go to all that effort! I'll take your advice and work on the guitar work first then try to add the vocals. I think I will aim for the 2nd version you teach. Thanks again for your help, it really is appreciated!
@@DC-dp3hk I'm wishing you the best with this... I think once you find the method that works best for you, this is something that you can apply to other songs. Some people will absolutely want the standard sheet music while it might be that all you need is a lead sheet. So keep me posted... happy pickin' and singin' bob
That is exactly what i will do Bob.....mix and match. My only thing is to figure out how tux works so that I can print out the sheets. I run into this every time... but eventually figure it out.
Hey Don, yea, I did think of you with this one and the mix and match is a little work to organize, but when you get it you might try improvising which is what I do (can't seem to play a set thing anyway). Doing a play along is hard for me with sticking to it... Did you get the sheet music? Just e mail me at acousticguitarvideos@gmail.com - will send.
Hi Bob, Just watched the video lesson which is great guidance, I'll naturally start working at it with the syncapations you've shown trying your different levels. Only problem I've currently got is that I get a privacy error and cant get to the sheet music via the web link, can you send it as a pdf and tux mail as you have done previously. Once again many thanks. Now its my turn to do the work on it. Alan
Hey Alan, I just wrote to you and didn't know you couldn't download the material. I wonder what's up with that privacy stuff. I think you are the only one that mentioned anything like that. Give me an update if you could try again, and let me know. When I get home later I can e mail it to you if you still can't get it..
Hei Bob, Is this our Merry Christmas song? Thank you for your tireless efforts throughout the year buddie and I look forward to learning songs like this with you. I owe you for sure. If you ever find your way over OZ then drop your gear at my place my friend! The song? I might do the same as Ian Bartlett below and try three levels but not until I get level one down. I still don't quite understand the "Capo" thing but using it is fun. Makes me look almost intermediate! I never studied or played music before stumbling upon you in these youtube tutorials some years ago now. Aat bout the syncopation Bob? The plucking takes some getting used to. I strummed downward on the 4 chords just to get an appreciation of the notes first. Mind you, I've only just started the lesson so will gradually introduce this plucking technique (3 strings together) soon
Hey Rog, Merry Christmas to you too my friend. I actually am trying to do a Christmas song right now but tomorrow is not looking good (hopefully soon before Christmas (ha ha). Guaranteed if I ever go to your neck of the woods there's no way I wouldn't stop in. Same goes for you too if you come here. I know that you can do 3 levels of this because we've had Level 3 which is Fingerpicking For Beginners ("That Song" it's called). It's just that the tempo is fast and the other two levels are easier to get speed going. They do sound really good and full when you are singing with it and not too much to think about. Can't tell you how happy I am that you are doing so well with all of this. I think when you came back again after a little layover that things started to click in. Sometimes that's what's needed. I know that's what happened to me with my singing as it went from intolerable and howling wolves to not so bad (or at least not offensive). Have a great weekend and I'll be back asap!!
Hey Michael, thank you for taking the lesson here and glad it helped! This is one of my favorite Dylan songs although he's got so many good ones. Wishing you a good guitar week and thanks again! bob
Hi Bob. Alan again. Just letting you know that the front intro sheet where you select the lesson. The sheets music down load's OK from there. So no need to send it via the other route. Cheers now
Hi Bob, I love the idea of mixing and matching parts of levels. If I understand correctly, it is, for example, alternating a level 2 measure with a level 3 measure. This creates a difference in rhythm. I wanted to experiment with this by creating a new .tg. file that combines the respective patterns. To do this, I copied measures 1 and 2 from level 2, then measures 1 and 2 from level 3. It is impossible for me to send you this file, but the result is not brilliant. I tried to play this file. tg. It is not better. It gets better if I increase the tempo. The experiment is interesting. I will continue. We'll see...
Hi Viv, I thought I responded to your e mail but it looks like it didn't go through. I basically said that another thing you can try is to do whole sections with one of the patterns, for example, Intro with Level 2, verse 1 with level 1, verse 2 with Level 2, and then chorus with level 3. I would love to see what you might come up with!!
Thank you so much for doing this for us, Bob!! You have really helped me out so much with learning fingerstyle. I really like the basic plus & Travis style of this. One thing I do want to get your advice on is anchoring with my pinky. I recently started doing this and not sure how much pressure to apply when anchoring or is it lightly resting on the body? That might be a really helpful video!
Hey Shawn, thank you for taking the lesson and really happy that all the lessons are helping you!! So the anchoring.. Many instructors will say to never anchor, especially classical, but Tommy Emanuel, Chet Atkins and Merle Travis all have anchored (winning team here). The main downfall is the scratching sound it can make, and is especially noticeable when you are recording the guitar. So what I have learned to do is not press down hard, with as little pressure as possible. Think of it as a light weight anchor... ha ha.. Yes, this would be a great video idea!!
@@AcousticGuitarVideosLessons I did hear someone recently on YT mentioning those guys and anchoring. I noticed I had been putting too much pressure on my picky causing my knuckle to bend back and my picky would be stuck in place. Then in this video I noticed you seemed to just rest your picky, so I started doing that. Now working on making that a habit. Thanks again!!
@@shawnshawn588 yea, just resting. What happens to me is my fingernail on my pinky will scratch the top of the guitar, and that's such a terrible sound. I tried filing down the nail more and that helped a little. But I too found that I was pressing a little too hard as well- I had to make a conscious effort with that. It's takes a while to break old habits and for me we're looking at 45 years worth. Glad you are changing this now!!
Hi Bob, I'm working at level 3 right now and i saw on the video that you're using your ring finger as well but according the video it shows TTITMTI or am i wrong?
Hey Paul, glad you are working on level 3! So this is just the standard Travis picking with the three fingers and the diagram you wrote is correct. I'm searching for where you saw me pluck with the index finger (maybe by mistake).
@UC-yUqfiB-MpzItjfQraX7tw It's got to be a mistake on my part- supposed to be using 3 fingers in any of these patterns. Now interesting because I also play with a regular flatpick together fingerstyle using middle and ring finger (index and thumb holding pick). Something to show for the future. Thanks Paul... happy pickin' !
Actually no but this is the key that Bob played it in using a capo. You can just use the same chord positions but the key will change. The other alternative if you wanted to play this song without a capo and be in the same key is to transpose the chords. So the C position chord would be a D chord, G would be an A chord (this is without the capo) and the Em would be an F#min chord. I would just think it easier to use the chord positions I show here and play without capo.. I hope this helps! bob
Thank you for this great video and lesson Bob. I had never heard this song before. Nice discovery. I was also unaware that there were Hippie chords. Those that you propose are very beautiful especially in the low tones. I recognized the banjo part. Same as the ukulele pattern I am studying at the moment: ua-cam.com/video/igjifeTqftA/v-deo.html If we only use the first 4 strings, we get the keyboard of a uku: G C E A. Funny. Useful if i break a string.
Hi VIV! I think that little joke in there is something unique to USA as a lot of those "old timers" are opposed to fancy sounding chords, especially in bluegrass music. I once had an old guy come up to me after a show and say mention to me that he didn't like those "hippy chords" I was playing... ha ha. Isn't it great how other instruments styles can transfer to another. I'm really happy you are learning the uke as that will do doubt add so much to your musical ability!!! Hope you have a great Christmas but we will probably chat before that!

Thank you Bob

Thanks for this Bob... Its BEAUTIFUL... Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Steve!! hope all is well with you.. been a crazy year for sure but we're still here!
Hi Cher! Sounds like you are liking the video and am glad you requested it- Good taste and I think the audience here agrees with you too. Many thanks and I hope you will have fun with this song. Please let me know if you need any help. Merry Christmas but we'll chat before that I'm sure!!

Ernie

Hi Gloria, great as always to see the puppy face..!
Happy week Viv!!
thank you for this lessons, wonderful
Thank you W A!! I'm so glad you like it!
Wishing you a great guitar weekend! bob
BTW, there's so many alternate names for the exact same chord- it's so confusing and you can spend a whole lifetime learning about it.. or just play..🤠
There's so much music to be played in Level 1 as that pattern can do so much.
Another place has a lead sheet (chords above lyrics). dylanchords.com/14_planetwaves/forever_young
The song is in the key of D (same as we are doing except we are playing in the C position capo 2).
I've run out of superlatives bob fantastic.
Thank you Glenn, so glad you are learning this one!!!
Happy weekend to you!!!
That is exactly what i will do Bob.....mix and match. My only thing is to figure out how tux works so that I can print out the sheets. I run into this every time... but eventually figure it out.
Hey Don,
yea, I did think of you with this one and the mix and match is a little work to organize, but when you get it you might try improvising which is what I do (can't seem to play a set thing anyway).
Terrific breakdown thanks and such a beautiful song....much appreciated 👍

Hi Bob. Alan again. Just letting you know that the front intro sheet where you select the lesson. The sheets music down load's OK from there. So no need to send it via the other route. Cheers now
Well, that was a fast update!! Glad you got it!!! Cheers my friend!!

Hi Bob,
I'm working at level 3 right now and i saw on the video that you're using your ring finger as well but according the video it shows TTITMTI or am i wrong?
Hey Paul, glad you are working on level 3! So this is just the standard Travis picking with the three fingers and the diagram you wrote is correct. I'm searching for where you saw me pluck with the index finger (maybe by mistake).
@UC-yUqfiB-MpzItjfQraX7tw It's got to be a mistake on my part- supposed to be using 3 fingers in any of these patterns. Now interesting because I also play with a regular flatpick together fingerstyle using middle and ring finger (index and thumb holding pick). Something to show for the future.
Thanks Paul... happy pickin' !
is the Capo needed
Actually no but this is the key that Bob played it in using a capo. You can just use the same chord positions but the key will change. The other alternative if you wanted to play this song without a capo and be in the same key is to transpose the chords. So the C position chord would be a D chord, G would be an A chord (this is without the capo) and the Em would be an F#min chord. I would just think it easier to use the chord positions I show here and play without capo..
I hope this helps!

Thank you for this great video and lesson Bob. I had never heard this song before. Nice discovery. I was also unaware that there were Hippie chords. Those that you propose are very beautiful especially in the low tones.
I recognized the banjo part. Same as the ukulele pattern I am studying at the moment:
ua-cam.com/video/igjifeTqftA/v-deo.html
If we only use the first 4 strings, we get the keyboard of a uku: G C E A.
