    The best thing about that removable handle is the ability to remove it prior to putting it in a hot oven, over a fire, or any heat source! This is a great pan! I know, my second comment!

      I couldn't agree more. It works as advertised and cooks really well. It is not as thick as kitchen focused European brands but has held up great!

    I just started seeing these at my local Scheels sporting goods store. I have always loved cooking over an open flame, and in cast iron. Been looking to getting into the lighter carbon steel, and the design of this handle is what drew my attention. Thanks for the review, you are very thorough, and I do appreciate your time.

    Found this video whilst looking for a way to buy one of these pans - seems like all three sizes aren't just discontinued, but practically scrubbed from the internet, only a few months later. REI still lists two of the sizes on their site, but as soon as you try to check out with one, they delete it from your cart, implying that they have zero stock on these. Bummer - looks like it would have fit our needs perfectly.

      Oh man, that is a bummer. It looks like the 8 inch pan still goes through my cart when I put it in there and go to check out but the 10 inch is unavailable as of now. I don't see them anymore on the Oxo Outdoor Website either. Reminds me of the old adage "when you find something that really works buy two as they are sure to discontinue them!"
      Hope they are just out and they do have their carbon steel pans available with the handle attached, but that won't pack as well.

    Recently bought the 10" skillet from REI. The handle now has beveled, or rounded, edges and is comfortable to grip. OXO appears to have responded to the criticism. I have an earlier version of the 8" skillet with the sharp edges on the handle; which I plan to sand down.

    Great review!!!! I just ordered my first carbon steel pan. I keep a few in my Jeep. A lodge 12 inch. My beautiful 10 inch Finex and now this 8 inch. They had a $20 off coupon for REI so this was a steal! I’ve got a beauty of a kitchen set up in back of my Jeep and I actually rv around the country full time. Can’t wait to put this baby over my new small Jeep firepit/grill! Not only that.. but removing the handle when I put it in my nomad grill is gonna be AMAZING!!! If I love it as much as I think I am.. I’m gonna have to get the 10 inch too! Thanks buddy!!! Great review!!!!

    That's definitely a sweet pan Dick! Light weight and can take the heat! Plus metal utensils can be used and the handle that has the quick release so if you needed to cover the entire pan or fit it in a small grill, it will fit just by removing the handle! I'm liking that pan a lot!👍👊🍻

      Thanks for dropping by-yes one thing I forgot to say in the closing was that I think the 8 inch one would work great as a roasting pan/baking dish in the Coleman Camp Oven. It really did surprise me how good the pan was.

    I have all three and use them regulary at home and when I'm camping. They work great! I take the 8 and 10 camping along with an 8 inch stainless and I'm good. I have a 4.1 qt dutch oven (cast iron) and that's the only heavy pot I have. I've been using the oxo pans for at least 1 year now and I have zero complaints.

    Just acquired the 10” frying pan from REI and a 12” bbq pan with removable handle from Costco ($15!). Both of them had well finished handles, so Oxo has fixed that issue.

      I just picked up the grill pan at Costco as well but have not had the opportunity to use it yet but you are right, they have redesigned the handle and more comfortable now.

    I bought this pan because I wanted to replace my non stick "teflon" pans for low temp delicate food cooking. This pan is REMARKABLE, period. The first day I received this pan I gave it the low temp egg test. I like my eggs with no crisp bottoms and over easy. I added half tablespoon of butter to this pan at low temp and added my egg. The egg immediately slid across the surface of the pan like my "teflon" oxo pan. The pan heated fast and cooled fast when I took it off the heat source. The non stick seasoned surface was like nothing I have seen before. I am so blown away by the performance that I am suspicious of the coating they put on. This is literally the best non stick pan I have ever used. INCREDIBLE ! Why aren't there more reviews on this exceptional pan ?

      Sounds like you are happy! Over time the seasoning will change as this is not a traditional nonstick pan, more like cast iron in that the seasoning evolves. Ours is in a really nice place now.

      @@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 I have owned two Carbon steel pans, both Matfers which I heard great reviews but they both warped within a couple of weeks. I don't even cook over high heat, so don't understand why the Matfers warped. The user manual of the oxo said to wipe a thin layer of oil on it after cooking and cleaning. Is this what you do every time to maintain the seasoning?

      @@brianh2287 I am surprised that your Matfers warped, I have had mine for years with no problems, maybe they are made differently now.
      Regarding the oiling yep, I usually spray a bit of Pam (I don't use any other brand of spray oil) and wipe it down really well so you can't really even see the oil. I do this will all my cast and carbon.

      @@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 There are many complaints about Matfers warping on electric and induction stovetops, in fact they are known for it. If I had known this I would have never purchased the Matfer carbon steel. Supposedly, Matfer designed their new carbon steel pans to not warp on indcuction and electric, but I still see complaints. I didn't feel comfortable buying another Matfer, so I decided to try the oxo. If you google "matfer carbon steel pan warping" you will see plenty on the issue, and it proved true for me. I might trust buying a matfer again if I had a gas stove, but most likely I'll just buy another brand.

      Thanks for watching-the stub has not been a negative for packing at this point and there would be a "cost" to having no stub which would require the handle to clamp to the side which may cause some small pain when stirring etc.

      @@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 they sold out of 10" so I might be waiting anyhow. It would be awesome if a company would come up with a set up that nests into a package like GSI or other camp brands. Most of the stuff doesn't spread heat very well or uses Teflon.

    If you cook for a large group you might try a 15" carbon steel pan that has two loop handles and no long handle. BK and OXO make one along with a few other manufacturers.

      My biggest carbon pan is a 13 inch with the two look handles. You are right they hold a huge amount of food! I have not seen the Oxo version of the large one.

      Yes, I have an old Calphalon lid that I use on it which fits fine. You won’t.t be able to use an oversized lid though.

    Not exactly an apple to apple comparison, but which would you reach for first -- this or the alpine fry bake ? Also, would you have a silicone sleeve to recommend that might fit this OXO handle?

      Well now isn't this a question! I don't want to waffle but I am going to waffle-It depends.
      For a straight up skillet that I was only going to use to fry, sauté and do other skillet work the OXO would be my choice as I am a big fan of carbon steel skillets. I normally have fire gloves with me when camping so the silicone handle I would not carry. If you are a stove only cooker maybe, but I still think a mitt or pot holder a better choice as can be used for more than one thing.
      If you are looking for a bit less weight in a pan that can survive in the backcountry with little to no maintenance (won't rust), can serve as a dutch oven with the lid, can use the lid to make it a braiser etc. then the Fry-Bake.
      Both are great pans and it really does depend on your use scenario.

      The carbon steel pan is not a non-stick skillet, it is a seasoned pan that builds up additional seasoning over time. I actually reached out to OXO to confirm this since the original seasoning was so robust.

      It looks like you would need one that is about 4.5' long and 1.25' wide. There is a Lodge one designed for carbon steel pan (handles are thinner than cast iron) on Amazon that is a bit long but you could probably cut it down. Here is the link - amzn.to/46xIZmp

    I was like these commenters didn’t give you a chance… you were like frying food in the beginning, but the more I watch the more horrified I was with the amount of oil you had in the pan lol 😂 with that grease all eggs won’t stick!

      Even with that much oil in a brand new skillet food can stick horribly and I always use more oil than normal in a brand new pan to help the seasoning process. Now a quick spray of Pam or drop of oil is all I use. No need to be horrified, I don’t always cook that way!

      There may be a generic one but I haven't seen anything for this pan specifically. If you don't really need the removable handle I think the regular Oxo carbon steel pans have one but I am not sure.

      I know this is very late, not sure why I missed it originally. I have not found a silicone handle but also have not looked as I always have a pair of heat gloves with me when camping so just use those. Silicone would be very handy though.@@brembofly

    You're worried about 30 lbs of weight while car camping?

      Short answer is absolutely. Longer answer-We are traveling and running remote areas in a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Hardrock that has a stated payload of 892 pounds. To that we have added a winch and mounting hardware equaling roughly 110 pounds and a larger spare tire and carrier that add additional weight so call that 762 pounds left. Add in extra fuel (10 gallons @ 6#/gallon) for another 60# and 10 gallons of water @ 80 pounds leaving 622 #. Sadly I am no longer a skinny young man so add in passenger weight for 2 of say 400 # which now leaves 222 pounds.
      Given I only have 222 pounds left for all my recovery gear, camping gear, clothing, cooking gear etc I do try to cut weight whenever and wherever I can.
      I want to remain in the payload so that I have better braking, control on the highway and trails, don't overtax my brakes on trails such as Black Bear, don't start breaking driveline and suspension components etc.
      That is my logic. Plus the performance of the pan is great!
      If I was taking the pickup to the state park for the weekend it would not be such a focus for me or the normal "car camping" scenario. I hope this makes sense.

      You would be shocked how many new cast and carbon pans stick eggs regardless. That is why many recommend not to cooks eggs on a new pan!

      I do love my Lodge cookware, if you have seen any of my other videos the Lodge dutch ovens are a mainstay. On the carbon steel it is the removable handle (and excellent preseasoning) on these pans that makes them so good.
      To my knowledge Lodge doesn't have removable handles.

      Always use a lot in a new pan and you would be surprised how much sticking you can get even when deep frying if the pan is not seasoned.

    I have to say, you used alot of oil to fry those potatoes, try using half the oil and see how that does.

      I did. For me that is standard practice when seasoning in any new cast or carbon skillet. I find that even that amount of oil will not prevent sticking in many new pans. Over time I definitely reduce the amount of oil and this pan has continued to season very well. Over time we started to see the coloration change and the pan taking on the newer seasoning very well.

    Carbon Steel is better than aluminum for sure

      Thanks for dropping by and commenting. I do love cooking on carbon steel and it is great for many things. I must admit I do use some aluminum as well, all US made. such as the Banks Fry-Bake for real light weight and the Woody's Dutch oven. There are videos on both on the channel if you are interested.
      But there are a lot of folks that do avoid using aluminum and that is why it is great to have choices!

    This isn’t proving anything at all, any pan will cook evenly with that much oil, that oil pool is making me feel sick

      A new cast iron skillet or carbon steel skillet can stick even when deep frying-which is why most manufacturers tell you to use more oil than you think you will need with a new pan. That is why I was so impressed with this one. Sorry you are sensitive to oil in a pan.
