So lovely to see the a red rattler so lovingly preserved. My parents hated them but they were still around when I was very little, albeit replaced mostly with the Hitachis if i remember correctly. Incidentally, those tram/train crossings are fascinating in themselves - happy to see you already did a video on this too, I need to start watching your entire back-catalogue now :)

Really nice to meet you in person after talking online for twenty years, Martin! This trip was a really good way to spend a few hours, I’m already wondering when I’ll be able to sink into those seats once again and enjoy the growl of the traction motors and the drum of the compressor as we rocket through the suburbs! You’re absolutely correct in defining the Tait as the best train in the world! I was pretty happy to see a quick glimpse of my group in the corner at 3:45, with your brilliant contrast of the Edwardian interior and the new Skyrail; nicely done. Looking forward to continuing the conversation next time, cheers.
There you go! I never actually understood what the different disk patterns on the front of the Taits signified. A day you learn something new is never a day wasted 👍
Geez I am old enough, 64, to remember riding the Tait trains from Jordanville on the Glen Waverley line when I was a kid. This brings back a lot of good memories of my childhood and how much things have progressed!
ah, now I'm even more curious if this was the one that went on the Mernda line a while back. I live close enough to Thornbury Station to hear announcements if the wind is going in my direction.
I got married on this day. My celebrant and two guests were in the taits in the morning. Spotted one of them in the doorway as the train docked at Upfield.
Hey, that's me at 4:59, in the green Met jacket opening the door to get into the train! Excellent footage mate, it was a lovely trip. I've never ridden the Tait train before and it was a testament to the work of the Clarks. I'd heard all about the old Suburban Rambler tours of Steamrail back in the early 2000s but never had a chance to do a tour this large and this substantial! Will you be riding the DERM in August? I've never done that one before so I'm jumping on that ASAP.
Awesome! Hopefully they'll do more tours like this. Not 100% if I'll be on the DERM tour yet, but I certainly might - it's been ages since it's been out and about!
You should definitely do a video like this for the steam shuttle to Hurstbridge for the Wattle Festival this year. I did that once even though I live in Hursty. Took the normal train into the city and then hopped on the shuttle all the way out. Really fun trip.
Hey Tait. I was wondering of you could make a video about what are the best stations in Melbourne, as on which are best for train spotting, I plan on going down to Melbourne for this purpose. Love your content mate.
I might so something like that eventually. Will James has made a few videos showing certain locations, like this one: ua-cam.com/video/SNQPCnK0L1w/v-deo.html I might be able to suggest some places though, is there anything in particular you'd like to see?
@@TaitsetI would especially be interested in filming some train arrivals/departures in some of the new stations like the skyrail ones and the trenched stations (I believe they are on the Sandringham line). Will check out that video, thanks.
@@Dallasgeri1 The only one on the Sandringham line is Elsternwick, which was done a few decades ago. The most impressive skyrail stations are the ones just beyond Caulfield on the Pakenham/Cranbourne lines. Carnegie Murrumbeena and Hughesdale are all quite good, then you go out to Springvale which is a trench station. That line is good too because you get the V/line Gippsland line trains as well.
l miss being able to open the window, and now they made them into like sealed tubes, l don't like riding in them. Christmas Day 81, flinders street to altona was the last time l rode on one of those. thanks for the memories
Amazing video! but just wondering if anyone knows if Steamrail are going to a tait tour on the Hurstbridge line? Or if they’re restoring their double ended single car tait to running condition.
Nothing planned for Hurstbridge that I'm aware of, but I'm sure they will at some point! And yep, double ender 470M is certainly being restored, last I heard it was progressing well.
can you please make a video about what trains run on which lines and what types of train will run on different lines in the future or an explainer about the metro tunnel
Yes indeed, certainly not a common move! On that parallel run tour one of the trains did this move but only as far as 12 - this was the first time I've seen it all the way to 13.
The next scheduled trip for the Tait train is on Sunday 6 August, where Steamrail are going to run a shuttle from Flinders Street to the Showgrounds for the AMRA Model Train Show at the Showgrounds. Other than it going from Newport to Flinders Street for the initial transfer, it's not scheduled to be on the Werribee line for the rest of the year.
Saw this as I was playing cricket in Willison. Such a shock to see how big they were. Seems a lot taller than most trains. Should have the footage there if the train passing, as I was streaming the games with the camera pointing towards the train track, but have no idea where to look, because I can't remember what time it went past 😅
You can check for upcoming tours here: www.steamrail.com.au/tours It certainly can run to Pakenham/Cranbourne, last time was April last year when it ran shuttles between Pakenham and Dandenong.
Really interesting. The old carriages were so stylish, with those superb pressed metal Wunderlich ceilings and real timber… Today’s carriages lack all character and class.
"Best train in the world"... lets not get a big head will we. Oh, you mean the one that still uses 750v for a control voltage.. yeah that one... I love it too... but I'll pass on it being "the best". I simply MUST get down there for a run soon someday. Maybe Jolly Johnson should run a special "Melbourne" tour!
frankly, it was a shame you didn't film passing Camberwell. I was waiting to get on a train towards belgrave. I would have been nice to see me and i have footage of the train passing.
The Taits have such a cheery whistle in comparison to Victoria's modern fleet (exception for comeng.) Such a beautiful and well appointed train!

Those trains are so well-appointed it's like sitting in your own loungeroom. I remember riding on a few as a kid before they were phased out.
Would love to see more of the inside of the train
Agree totally!
leather seats and old style lights
Havent seen it?

The Tait on the Skyrail. What a great pairing of old and new
Love this awesome old train, so cool it’s in use! And the ending is brilliant too with the much loved comeng👍

Would have loved to see the shocked faces of people not expecting it lol
Fantastic work mate
ah, now I'm even more curious if this was the one that went on the Mernda line a while back. I live close enough to Thornbury Station to hear announcements if the wind is going in my direction.
It ran to Mernda on 15th of August 2021.
I was very said when metro said Electrail couldn't run their wooden stock any more. I'm glad they relented. I love taits and Dogboxes.
Wow what a beauty! Greetings from the states.
I'm just so amazed that the current infrastructure is so backward compatible with the old train. Makes filming a period drama a lot easier!
Great video, and terrific commentary. Thanks for creating & sharing your skilled production.

I love the AC traction motors on the train, the growling❤❤❤❤❤
DC 1500 Volts on the overhead wire power supply.
But perhaps stepped down to 750V DC at the motors.
I Saw the train going around whilst walking to the MCG!
That unit looks and sounds lovely.

I saw it when it paused at Coburg for 15-20 minutes between services. Nice to see it out and about again
Now that would've been fun indeed! Thank you for the video! I have fond memories of the Taits!
Saw it go through Richmond! Really cool.
Awesome stuff !!
6:31 hi me (standing next to the X'trap that departed on me and the other guy as soon as you guys passed)
Did you get a clear shot or was the xtrap too close?

@@TrainsForNSWVlogs Yes I definitely want to do some more Sydney stuff soon!
Will they convert these heritage trains to run a/c once the whole network switches over?
I very much doubt it. Though I don't think there will be widespread AC conversion any time soon.

Did you ride the Tait train on the 26th of November last year as part of the Eaglemont Festival?
This is probably the only way you will all be able to hear the beautiful RVB 3 chimes
They're also on the Y/T/P/H class diesels, some S class, and the DERM. But yes, getting a lot less common!
