This is by far the best scale maille tutorial I have come across. I love that you used large rings to show the pattern, and your video was nicely zoomed and focused. The technique of starting the work close to you and working the pattern out and away made much more sense than the other videos I watched that had me do the opposite. And I love that you weaved this example piece while it was laying flat on the table-the other videos where the instructor picks up the piece to add a row just get confusing real quick because all of the rings flop all over the place. 2 thumbs way way up! I love this first piece that I made and can’t wait to give it as a gift this Christmas! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. This video by far from my research really helped clarify how to do a dragonscale chainmail. I really loved how you used large rings to demonstrate.
Thank you for helping me wrap my head around this weave! I can finally understand what I am doing and am able to put it down and pick up where I left off!
Best tutorial for dragonscale I've seen! I've been trying to learn this pattern for ages but could never understand the tutorials on how to do it- this was so much easier to understand, great job!
Thanks for this tutorial. I've only been mailling for a couple of months and this is the only video of making dragon scale I found that I could follow along and do it. I had a few false starts but I've got it now.
I agree with cherylvanputten below. This is the BEST video for Dragonscale I've seen. I'm finally getting it. I'm working on jewelry scale [much tinier] and in Argentium Sterling and for anyone else at that might be at that scale, I saw one tip on another site where the maker used a thinner gauge for the small rings....so if the large rings were 18 ga make the small rings 20 ga but the same diameter as the AR for smaller rings. That made it a whole lot easier...especially when learning.
a fellow geeky nerd, i salute u. I built a wood burning forge a few months ago. i've got a tricked out home designed anvil. i've got two home made hammers two knives and a gladius. the creme de le creme is my unfinished crossbow (trigger assembly almost done). now i need some chainmail.
I agree with her. The dragon scale pattern is also my favorite. But here in Brasil the wire to make any maille is expensive. We don't have tradition in doing maille. And the wires are for other purposes more "important". You may say: use galvanized steel but outhere it rusts in a month. ;-ç
I used to make regular 4in1 chainmail in high school using notebook wire. It looked pretty cool. I decided to try to make faux chainmail when I saw a black mesh laundry bag with wide circular mesh rings I took it apart spray painted it silver and it looks pretty good as costume armor if you double layer it.
hi :) thought I'd have a look around youtube for any chaimail making videos and i was surprised to find someone as happy as you that actually knows his stuff :p cheers for the well explained videos :) tbh i've been making chainmail for years, but i never could work out dragonchain (made my head hurt trying to work it out)
Excellent thank you this is the best dragon scale demo i've seen online, I now have the courage to attempt a dragon scale necklace or bracelet in gold and silver. It'l no doubt be fiddly though...Again thanks
i bet this would be fantastic when used on an arming doublet using riveted mail. that way there would be almost no weaknesses in a full plate armour except the eye slits
I know this is an old video but for the past month now I have been looking for chainmail jewelry tutorials and a lot of them the Rings are way too tiny and I find it hard to follow along. This video helped me a lot with the large rings I could easily follow along thank you so much!
this does look interesting and i'll have to give it a shot at some point. Can we expect a tutorial for some more chainmail clothing? we have the headpiece so how about the rest of the outfit? Also, would the tecnique for making the clothing differ much if using this dragonscale patten as opposed to the normal one?
It seems to me that you could make this with one set of rings (small or large) already closed, and do all the joining using the other size. This would halve the number of rings that need to be closed during the actual construction. If you were using welded or riveted rings, then pre-closing the small rings would be much faster than closing and welding/rivetting while on the actual mail.
I am a new subscriber so i havent seen most of your videos, but if you haven't already a small or big statue of alduin with a tutorial would be really cool.
I recently played through Metro: Last Light, and I loved it. I thought of a project you can do: The .50 Bullet Lighter that the main character Artyom carries about. I would be very interested.
epicfantasy That is nothing new to me. :) I have been in that situation many times and always survived though perhaps with a few more scars than before. :) I don't intend to go out looking as perfect as I did when I came into the world. :D Thanks for the heads up. - Heidi
really good one but it left me a question.. when you've made pieces of ti how would you link one to another? (forgive my english if I made any mistake.. it's a log time I'm not practicing them :P )
I tried to make this into a bracelet. It didn't come out like I wanted it to though. I think the smaller rings and the larger rings have to be the same thickness. The smaller one fit into the larger ring but the smaller ones I got were thicker. It just make it really tight.
Do you think you can make a full short sleeved shirt and use it as a prize of some sort, because I want it for a cosplay but I don't want other people to not have a chance
when doing the dragonscale, does it get hard to put the ring in? because on the eight row it's very tight...please let me know what I can be doing wrong... thank you for your time
It looks awesome! I´d like to ask, if it has the same "chain-armor ability" - means if it is useful as an armor like the normal chainmail; or if possible you could show how it looks as the whole armor, not only pattern - thanks a lot! Otherwise - really good job again - i like your tutorials!!!
+Ondřej Kolomazník Any mail is good as armor. But the 4 in 1 weave is more effective since its less weight and the smaller rings in dragonmail are weaker than what is found in 4 in 1.
i just compare the 2 chainmail videos , this one and the old 2012 one , and belive me the beard make you look so much better than the shaved version hahaha
Do you think that you can make a full short sleeved shirt made of chain mail for a contest, I want one for a cosplay, but I want the odds to be fair for others.
you could always make it yourself as it isnt to hard to do :) im working on one myself with my uncle. once you have the rhythm of it you can blast though it.
What size rings are you using? I'm using 5/8 inch ID for the large rings and 1/2 inch ID for the small rings. I can weave just fine, but when I hold up my mail the shape falls out of place and the dragonscales aren't really visible
Kumagai1976 by normal do you mean European 4 in 1 I am not at all and expert and have not measured it myself but judging from the ring size and amount of rings i can make a prediction. Compared to the 4 in 1 its heavier since you have the added weight of the small rings. When compared to the 6 in 1 or the 8 in 1 i think its lighter.
That would depend entirely on where you're hanging it and how you want it to lay. If you're thinking of doing something like hanging it from a normal shirt and you want to cover the entire surface, you would stitch the rings that lay on your shoulders and the rings at the bottom hem of the shirt. If you were going for something more decorative, like say faux-slashed sleeves, you'd probably want to stitch through the rings that lay near your shoulders, the rings at your elbow and then the rings at your wrist. So in order to give you a more specific answer, I'd need you to give more information first.
Only the cheap stuff was riveted, most of it was riveted and welded, but the good stuff was all welded. However in today's world, the strength of the steel will be enough to hold the mail together, unless you're getting involved in a real fight with really strong people and sharp swords(however in a fight with sharp swords, you'll want plate armour not chain mail, mail has to many holes to slip a point in).
hmm I see! pretty cool and makes, sense! but regarding the welding and rivets, they must have some sort of jig to speed up the process, I'd love to see how do they do it anyways... Thanks for the reply, mate! =)
Had anyone ever made a shirt with this pattern? I've made 2 other chainmail shirts already, but I want something different to wear, so I think it's time for me to try this
I actually understand this tutorial, and can see what you are doing. THANK YOU. Might be easier if you used colored rings for teaching, even though I know that is not "authentic" in any way.
So in essence, the pattern is an Interwoven 4 in 1, with different size rings, where you only assemble half the four in one at a time? at least that's how it appears to me. it seems that when you look back at the previously made portions of this mail, you see four small rings in the big ones and vice versa, but to get the density it is interwoven, meaning you can only assemble half the 4 in 1, then half of the next row of 4 in 1, then finish the first 4 in 1, interweaving the bottom of the second 4 in 1 in the process of completing the first, wash, rinse, repeat. Am I understanding the structure of the pattern properly?
kememorethyuri I can't really decide if I want to do the 4 in 1 the 6 in 1 or the dragonscale for a full mail. I did smaller pieces before but the stakes are higher with a big project like this one. The 4 in 1 is not as nice but easy and fast to make and the lightest to wear. The dragonscale looks the best but takes the longest to make from what I read. The fact that I would need to make 2 types of rings is also a complicating factor. The 6 in 1 looks nice but is the heaviest of the 3 I assume. Its a little harder to make then the 4 in one but there are ways to speed weave it. Do you have more information or suggestions ?
me personally? nope. I have never made mail at all. lol. but i'm interested in getting into blacksmithing and so i watch a lot of videos. Seems though like it is a matter of what is important to you. If you want medieval warrior look, go wit the 4 in 1.The dragon scale may look the best, but i think, due to the construction, that it is the bulkiest of the three mail types, while the six in one would seem to have better protection, though it is heavier, so i would assume that it depends of the purpose of your mail. However, you also have to take into account the skill factor. Id say if it is your first time, do the 4 in one. Almost every video i have watched about mail says that. I would assume it is because it is the fastest and easiest to make for a beginner.
kememorethyuri I have made mail before but that was almost always jewelry. I have looked further into armor and with a better AR(aspect ratio) 4in1 looks good too. The only problem now is to find stainless steel rings/wire. The place where I got my other rings only sells copper, brass, silver and plated stainless with small diameters. I have all the tools to make the rings myself if I find the wire but stainless wire is hard to find. I only found stainless cable so far.
I often wonder how long it would have taken someone in medieval times to create a full set of battle-ready mail, considering the tools and technology of the day.
The thing is the tools and technology they had would be for specific jobs like this. It would still take longer but they would have tools specifically for making chainmail
Oh yeah, this type of weave is fairly resistant to most things. If you look at the way the mail lays, you can see that you would have a hard time getting most types of weapons through that. Its even fairly good against bludgeoning weapons like maces and hammers, which traditionally would tend to force the rings out of place and embed them in the padding beneath/the body of the person wearing the armor. The tightness of the pattern means that it isn't as susceptible to pointed objects sneaking in through/between the rings. I will say though that wearing a shirt made of this would be *very* heavy; though I've never held one, I'd make a fairly educated guess that it would weigh a good 5 pounds more than a normal mail shirt.
epicfantasy When you work with chainmail, How do you map out how to make what you want to make? For ex you would make a Coif different form a body armor.
hiya! me and my uncle are working on different pieces, he is working on a coif and i am working on a shirt but we hit a little snag when we came to the skullcap of his coif...im trying to figure out how you did your "pizza slices" but you didn't really go into detail in your video and the tutorial on the website doesn't help me much...any tips or maybe a more detailed video focusing on making the "pizza slices" to make skullcap of a coif? Thanks in advance ~Dark
Does it have anything better than the normal 4v1 style, or it just looks good? I see you use butted mail so this channel is probably for costume makers, not for reenactors.
Jacob Thomas Yes, there are records of them existing, but not historical use in battle. There are a lot of videos on the internet that show, how little protection the butted mail provides, but if you want to make sure, just buy one, and then put it on, and commit sepukku, you will succed. If you want butted mail to be strong, you have to treat it specially, by coating it in silver(expensive as fuck), or giving it a heat treatment, which didn't existed until late 13th century, so you probably wore riveted mail to battle, because that shit protects you from everything, exept blunt force trauma, and stronger bows (over 70 lbs).
Finally someone that can teach clearly how to do this pattern. Thank you so much.

Thanks for that tip about opening the rings left handed or right handed. It's not something I thought about before.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. This video by far from my research really helped clarify how to do a dragonscale chainmail. I really loved how you used large rings to demonstrate.

Great tutorial! Very clear! The best one I could find on Dragon Scale. Now I was finally able to make a dragon scale bracelet. Thanks!

Totally addicted to chainmail. This video is wonderful. Trail and errors yesterday, now I'm on a roll. Thank you 😊
Lovely job, you got the weave nice and tight while keeping mobility. My wife makes mail and one of her favorite patterns is the dragon scale pattern.
I agree with her. The dragon scale pattern is also my favorite. But here in Brasil the wire to make any maille is expensive. We don't have tradition in doing maille. And the wires are for other purposes more "important". You may say: use galvanized steel but outhere it rusts in a month. ;-ç
No, I'd never say use galvanized steel for any sort of armor. If you can't get stainless or mild steel, I'd look into anodized aluminum.
Robson Dias
have you tried going to a welder supply to get"brazing rod"?
dufusrunescape Ohh nice bro!!! I'll do that... Many thx for giving that advice!!
No problem, hope it works out for you!
I used to make regular 4in1 chainmail in high school using notebook wire. It looked pretty cool. just got into making chainmail and i knew some basics but i knew you would have something on it
dude, your my hero, I thought I was the biggest nerd on planet earth.
Thanks for following my channel!
hi :) thought I'd have a look around youtube for any chaimail making videos and i was surprised to find someone as happy as you that actually knows his stuff :p
cheers for the well explained videos :)

You are very welcome. thanks for watching and you just go for it!
Good to see you back on the channel! :)

I love your chainmail and blacksmithing videos. Would you ever do king's chainmail as a video?
Hey great work I have a suggestion a cast saurons ring like you did the septum
Chain mail is pretty cool! Does take a while to make through.
i found you today and had a bindge watch. god i love your vids. you are so happy xD
Thanks for finding me!!!
You're welcome.
Very beautiful thanks for sharing. I am going to have to make some so i can look at it everyday.
Since the mail is not riveted it would be nice to see if it can be easily pulled apart with just your arm strength. That would be a nice follow up.
Beautiful pattern, great work.
Awesome! I made a coif out of the other type of chainmail, and was wondering if you could make a tutorial on how to make a dragonscale coif. ☺
thank you for the lefty tip it workssss
I really enjoyed your tutorial, how do you finish your pieces. I am trying to make or find a pattern for a cod piece.
Great work! I'll have to give it a whirl.
Do you know what would be the best way to attach "scales" to make a Scale mail. If you do, would you mind making a tutorial for that?
this does look interesting and i'll have to give it a shot at some point.
Can we expect a tutorial for some more chainmail clothing? we have the headpiece so how about the rest of the outfit? Also, would the tecnique for making the clothing differ much if using this dragonscale patten as opposed to the normal one?
The spacing of the weave is very tight do you think this would be able to be riveted or spot welded?
So it's just the first row where you lay the closed large rings down over the small rings before joining the second row?
It seems to me that you could make this with one set of rings (small or large) already closed, and do all the joining using the other size. This would halve the number of rings that need to be closed during the actual construction. If you were using welded or riveted rings, then pre-closing the small rings would be much faster than closing and welding/rivetting while on the actual mail.
Can u do some more chain mail patterns that look good for armour
¡Gracias! Al fin pude entender el sistema para hacer las escamas de dragon.
I am a new subscriber so i havent seen most of your videos, but if you haven't already a small or big statue of alduin with a tutorial would be really cool.
i've never made the other chainmail, but this honestly looks easier to me
Gona make a riveted mail shirt, as such I need to know how flexible its this weave compared to 4 in 1? Any idea which is stronger?
I recently played through Metro: Last Light, and I loved it. I thought of a project you can do: The .50 Bullet Lighter that the main character Artyom carries about. I would be very interested.
This is so cool. I am just brave (or maybe crazy) enough to try this even though I have never done chainmail before.

Your hands are going to get sore :)
epicfantasy That is nothing new to me. :) I have been in that situation many times and always survived though perhaps with a few more scars than before. :) I don't intend to go out looking as perfect as I did when I came into the world. :D Thanks for the heads up.

Hey I am planning to make a glove out of gemstones in a chain mel style can you make a video to show me how to make it?
Do you only make butted mail or do you make true riveted or soldered mail too?
Can you make a video in how to make a dragon scale hood?
So, essentially a helm weave in sheet form?
really good one but it left me a question.. when you've made pieces of ti how would you link one to another? (forgive my english if I made any mistake.. it's a log time I'm not practicing them :P )
I tried to make this into a bracelet. It didn't come out like I wanted it to though. I think the smaller rings and the larger rings have to be the same thickness. The smaller one fit into the larger ring but the smaller ones I got were thicker. It just make it really tight.
Any advantage over 8 in 1 or 10 in 1 chainmail beside looks?
Do you think you can make a full short sleeved shirt and use it as a prize of some sort, because I want it for a cosplay but I don't want other people to not have a chance
This is so much fun!!!
when doing the dragonscale, does it get hard to put the ring in? because on the eight row it's very tight...please let me know what I can be doing wrong... thank you for your time
Could you make Mal's pistol from the show Firefly?
Can you make kings mail aswell?
Brilliant! Looks great
Thanks :)
epicfantasy Have you thought about that board game I mentioned? (:
epicfantasy Have you thought about that board game I mentioned? (:
Can you do a sped-up video of you chronologically making a chainmail vest?
I have a good suggestion, if you know anything about star trek, do the blade of Kahless.
this was really good
Do you think you could make tsugumi's halberd from soul eater not. (with the blade)
Thanks :)
I was jsut wondering, wheather or not i "folds into Y" and therefore, if it allows you the mobility in comparrison to 4in1.
can you make a tutorial on how to make a plastic mask
i just compare the 2 chainmail videos , this one and the old 2012 one , and belive me the beard make you look so much better than the shaved version hahaha
Hey bro great work here. thx for sharing. Your channel is awesome!!! Sorry but did you mention the kind of wire you use??
This is 14 gauge steel fence wire.
heck yes. I some new armor to make. thanks man.
does this protect more?
Do you think that you can make a full short sleeved shirt made of chain mail for a contest, I want one for a cosplay, but I want the odds to be fair for others.
you could always make it yourself as it isnt to hard to do :) im working on one myself with my uncle. once you have the rhythm of it you can blast though it.
thanks man and you you make a letter opener that would be awesome!!!!
I am going to forge a letter opener for sure.
thanks your awesome
What size rings are you using? I'm using 5/8 inch ID for the large rings and 1/2 inch ID for the small rings. I can weave just fine, but when I hold up my mail the shape falls out of place and the dragonscales aren't really visible
I think the best analogy is that the smaller ring just fits inside the large ring.Worked well for me.
Try using candrink pin and make a chain
aside from aesthetics, does this dragonscale mail have anything over normal chainmail?
Yes, it offers better protection because it is denser and layered.
dragonscale heavier than normal chainmail weave?
i mean by how much roughly
Kumagai1976 by normal do you mean European 4 in 1
I am not at all and expert and have not measured it myself but judging from the ring size and amount of rings i can make a prediction.
Compared to the 4 in 1 its heavier since you have the added weight of the small rings. When compared to the 6 in 1 or the 8 in 1 i think its lighter.
thank you once i have mine done i will link you so you can see what it looks like from yours, yes?
what gauge is that wire?
I've searched ror so many tutorials and every time your channel shows up. Is there anything do don't do?
Thanks for returning every time :) The only thing I don't do is give up!
Do you suspend your work outside your tutorials? I have found it to be much easier
Hi Will, to your knowledge, did any budget minded viking, roman, saxon or even any of those mad normans know this kind of pattern ??
Great question. I don't know.
Was this an historical technique?, or it's fantasy based?
One question, if you are gonna attach this to some clothing, which rings should you thread the stitches thro???
Does it matter?
Great question, I am not really sure.
TheRunesmythe thanks for your help ^^ wasn't sure if it was a proper way to do so, that was all.
No problem, glad I could help.
1:38 what are the inches in cm
3/8" is .952cm 5/8" is 1.587cm you could probably round it to 1cm and 1.5cm as long as they still fit inside eachother (like it says in the video)
the original real chain mails had each ring *riveted* close, right?
how would that system work?
Neat short story!
Thanks :)
Had anyone ever made a shirt with this pattern? I've made 2 other chainmail shirts already, but I want something different to wear, so I think it's time for me to try this

kememorethyuri that's pretty much it
sweet!
kememorethyuri I can't really decide if I want to do the 4 in 1 the 6 in 1 or the dragonscale for a full mail.

I have made mail before but that was almost always jewelry.
I suspect that there would have been several people working on it.
it would take 1 armorer & 2 apprentice approx 2 - 3 days of work to make a mail hauberk
The thing is the tools and technology they had would be for specific jobs like this. It would still take longer but they would have tools specifically for making chainmail
Im working on the scroll
cool, send me a pic when its done!
you should make a full body armor chain mil
Could I use this for an archery target?
nope, it is resistant to arrow pierces.
epicfantasy It is resistant to arrow pierces ???
Is it resistant to regular blades too ??
Thanks and great job out there !! =D
Ok, thanks.
epicfantasy When you work with chainmail, How do you map out how to make what you want to make? For ex you would make a Coif different form a body armor.

hiya! me and my uncle are working on different pieces, he is working on a coif and i am working on a shirt but we hit a little snag when we came to the skullcap of his coif...im trying to figure out how you did your "pizza slices" but you didn't really go into detail in your video and the tutorial on the website doesn't help me much...any tips or maybe a more detailed video focusing on making the "pizza slices" to make skullcap of a coif? Thanks in advance

People have trouble with the pizza slices. Keep at it. You will get it. All I have is the video and the web tutorial.
Does it have anything better than the normal 4v1 style, or it just looks good? I see you use butted mail so this channel is probably for costume makers, not for reenactors.
There are records of butted mail, historically. That makes sense, you know, since the time savings are immense.
You are amazing
it's so good. But if you print larger rings and smaller rings with different colour thats gonna be better to understand for someone...
Awesome!
can you please make a video where you rams a knife against such a thing
