40-year-old beginner here. I read comics religiously as a kid in the 90s, but I never had anyone to explain any of this stuff to me, so I just kinda faded out of it. Now that I’m older, less insecure, and have (a little bit) more money to invest in the hobby, I’m embracing it with both hands. I couldn’t care less about collecting comics as “assets” with the intent of having it increase in value, instead I’m collecting them to appreciate the artistry, the stories, the “thrill of the hunt”, and to make 11-year-old me proud. Thanks so much for making some beginner-oriented content, mate. The intended audience of this video really appreciates it!

I’ve collected an few Comic Books before planning to get some next year, thinking and talking about comics has gotten really inspired to create my own.
Just took a humanities class my last semester and learned about comics a bit and they really interested me. Really want to get into them but don’t know where to start. It just seems a bit intimidating, but videos like these make it a bit easier to digest so thank you!
This was a good overview, especially for the newbies, but at around 4mins40s you say that the whole series of Bendis' DD is contained in 2 x TPBs, however you meant to say Omni's - obvious what you meant but might confuse the those learning about the formats for the first time.

I order online no comic stores arnd here .. shipping is a pain but I still love doing it and intend to continue buying and reading comics going forward. First book I got is the king spawn 1 n pre order . Loved the content will check all the other content you have put out ..new subscriber

Awesome video! I bought comics every now and then. Mostly completed stories. But I really started with manga. After that, thanks to the New 52, I started getting comic regularly. And it took me a while to understand the therminology, know artists and writers. Then I went to forums to ask and that´s how I learned.

My favorite thing starting out was to wander around my comic book shop looking at covers until I found something cool that was either a #1 or a stand alone and read that. Helped me discover lots of writers and artists, learn what I liked.

Thanks a ton,I've been reading comics since I was 4(I'm 13 this year)and it was really just my dad's old Archie comics but in the past 5 years I've started actual comics.This helped me figure out what a run was,as I couldn't figure out what it really was so thanks,keep up the good work
This was an awesome video again and really helpful. Like some others, I got into comics from the films. First comics I got were the Back to the future IdW ones, then got a couple of Spider-Man ones. Apparently mine are tpb ones. Only have a small collection so far but no doubt it will grow.
Don’t forget to check your local library! Some libraries have great comic book and graphic novel selections and it’s a great way to sample many series for free.
I am thinking of applying for an job at a comic book store. I have already been reading all my life but never deep dived and got all the terms. Thank you
Me as a veteran collector of 14 boxes and a binder full of the 90s trading cards how I started out was at a young age moms use to buy me books from newsstands and take me to comic shops. I just grabbed any cover that looked cool rather marvel dc image etc and read some majority of my books I never read I just put in the boxes move on to grabbing more books. I still use this method today when I buy books especially back issues which I only collect.
As someone who’s been reading comics for a good while I wanna add on a good store I go too, if you live in the US try Half Price books, very good book store with affordable prices!

This was helpful. I've bought and read a few Comics already, but I never delved deeper into the terminology, etc. My favorite writers so far are Warren Ellis and Matt Fraction. Recently bought a collection from the Charles Soule DD run.
This is a huge help. I've been wanting to get into comics so much time, and didn't really have a good idea where to start. Here's hoping by this same time next year i have a great collection.
Thanks for being so welcoming to new people! Being exposed to the internet from a young age has left me with some… issues. I tend to feel bad for liking anything because I know there’s always gonna be someone that says I shouldn’t like it or that I’m not a real fan for not liking this other thing. It helps a lot when someone like you are so helpful and assure people that they can like whatever they like without judgement. My birthday is in four days and I’m really hoping to get some of the recommended starting volumes for some characters I like ^_^
I do not need videoes like this, but like to see them, to find out how many mistakes i did back then. Also it helps putting into words, when friends ask me where to start regarding with Marvel and DC. Nice video. :)
Great video Dogg! You clearly took the time to consider knowledge that I've taken for granted for so long might not actualy be that clear to a complete newcomer... i.e. what is a "run", what does TPB stand for... I can see this video being helpful to many people just starting out. Wish I'd have better understood at an earlier point the differences between formats and how things eventually get collected into better editions over time. Some things I bought straight away in TBP or standard sized HC where I would have happily waited for an OHC or omni if I'd have known more about how that happens.

I started comics around October 2022 and I can say Amazon is surprisingly good for comics but for older comics and omnibus just search up comic shops with 5 stars and find the closest to you for me when I started I found a comic shop but after going to other I found my perfect one so just keep looking for a shop and trust me you’ll find it quick
I just started collecting comic books today I found a comic book store down the street from my house. I chosen them by my favorite superheroes. Wolverine, Punisher, Carnage. Amazing comics..❤

So I just want to to read them *specifically* like for myself ...& without doing any deepdiving into comics ...so is that fine ?
I was a beginner about a year ago. Unfortunately, comic book stores really turned me off to it all. The employees at multiple shops in my area were all so rude, dismissive, and always unpleasant. I really couldn’t stand walking in to ask for anything, let alone if I could see a certain stack or box. There was literally only one guy who I enjoyed talking to about comics because he was super helpful and informative. Ultimately the rest of the people outweighed him and ruined my experience to where I stopped reading altogether. But I’m back at it now, although in digital form only for the time being. Anyways, I really do love your Where To Start videos. My god are they helpful 😂

@@MaddoggComicsI'm new to comics myself. I'm 36 but just started the hobby, I don't know if that's weird or not? I've always read novels , mainly Sci-Fi. At least one book a week for a long time now. But comics are something different. They really can be confusing for a beginner, and the price can be off putting as well sometimes! But still, you have to start somewhere and I'm learning as I go.
Love your video, … , I was just thinking on the Hawkeye comic. I’ve never read a Hawkeye comic before, but I like the character from the movies, and went they say the v series was going to be based on that comic, I pick up and read it and I like it a lot. But, like you say, it was because it was something I was interested. I DO like superhero comics, but my thing it’s more the Ninja Turtles. I believe the gate keeping in comics is one of the worst things, like, if you do not know a tiny detail of character you got bullied or similar. So, it’s good to see there is people with a positive approach in recommendations and help… you sir, got a new subscriber!

Always good to review the formats and sizes...wait that's not how I meant it...anyway it's normally the reason people see huge price fluctuations for the same content. Only seeing 'Hardcover' can be super misleading when getting started in the hobby if you don't know your OHC, from your Standard from your Omni.
I needed this i dont collect comics i only read graphic novels probably got alittle over 100. I have been in and out of them over the years, but really dont know where to start. Your Daredevil video really helped me because that is someone i am really wanting to get into, and only had the yellow book.

Ik this is almost a year after this video, but I have to say how timeless this video feels. If there’s one thing I recommend for any newcomers as a newcomer myself: look at reboots. I’m becoming obsessed with Ultimate Marvel comics, which was sorta designed for newer modern readers. If you want to feel like you’re starting from the beginning, get an intro to characters without years’ worth of relationship drama and baggage, reboots are really good for that, ie Ultimate Marvel. Ultimate X-Men in particular was inspired by the first movie, so if you like the movies, that might be a decent place to start. Not all of it has been perfect, but I feel it gives me something to look forward to when I start really reading mainline Marvel comics. …or just read Ultimate Spider-Man bc it slaps pretty hard lol.
I've decided to start by wanting the The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1-4 (first since I'm un-DYING to watch TWD on Netflix because I missed 3 seasons that came out and I got to watch S1:E1 only because my parents said "no"; and back then there were only 8 or 7 seasons); the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles compendium volume 1-4; Batman Black and White Volume 1 and 2; and the Alien Vs Predator omnbius series.

Would it surprise you to know I collect trades and at 500 volumes not one of them is Marvel or DC. I don't really like superhero stories so 80% of my collection is image comics.

As this is 'A Beginner's Guide', IMO, you should have talked just a bit slower (not as slow as 75%, which is available in the settings) but a tinny bit slower than you usually do, with special attention to more important parts, so that people could comprehend and possibly remember the new ideas and information you are presenting here better. Otherwise, the content and the basic idea behind the video was excellent, so keep the good work and keep educating the new members of the community!
Man I have a box of comics and I started looking today and some of them are pretty cool. I have all of the old gi joes. But I have no idea what to do with them
Got into comics a year ago and keeping up with the current issues is a breeze for Marvel and DC with their respective comic apps. The issue is when characters I haven’t met yet but are established already show up. Then I do a quick bit of research but I plan on getting a history of the marvel universe book that was updated a few years ago to help with that. Ninja turtles is easy to keep up with. I do have one question though. What’s the difference when people use Vol and run? Like for Iron man 2020 is that whole series a run or Vol? Is Iron Man 2023 then a new run or Vol? Or are those just classed as series?
I may not have understood, but how do you know that youve bought a whole story arch or beginning to end of a sory for a character etc. Also how do you know what story for a character to start with? At the beginning 🤔

Hey man, this helped a comic newcomer heaps! Used to read some graphic novels as a kid now and again, but never had the opportunity to really get into comics. After some reddit-ing I realised that there was a fair bit more to understand than I initially expected. Particularly your breakdown of the acronyms was super helpful, the only ones I had managed to figure out from context were TPB and OHC. Anyway, just a friendly hello and message of appreciation from someone looking to get started!

Don’t forget to check your local library! Some libraries have great comic book and graphic novel selections and it’s a great way to sample many series for free.

Me as a veteran collector of 14 boxes and a binder full of the 90s trading cards how I started out was at a young age moms use to buy me books from newsstands and take me to comic shops. I just grabbed any cover that looked cool rather marvel dc image etc and read some majority of my books I never read I just put in the boxes move on to grabbing more books. I still use this method today when I buy books especially back issues which I only collect.
As someone who’s been reading comics for a good while I wanna add on a good store I go too, if you live in the US try Half Price books, very good book store with affordable prices!

I tend to feel bad for liking anything because I know there’s always gonna be someone that says I shouldn’t like it or that I’m not a real fan for not liking this other thing. It helps a lot when someone like you are so helpful and assure people that they can like whatever they like without judgement. My birthday is in four days and I’m really hoping to get some of the recommended starting volumes for some characters I like ^_^
I do not need videoes like this, but like to see them, to find out how many mistakes i did back then. Also it helps putting into words, when friends ask me where to start regarding with Marvel and DC. Nice video. :)
Great video Dogg! You clearly took the time to consider knowledge that I've taken for granted for so long might not actualy be that clear to a complete newcomer... i.e. what is a "run", what does TPB stand for... I can see this video being helpful to many people just starting out. Wish I'd have better understood at an earlier point the differences between formats and how things eventually get collected into better editions over time. Some things I bought straight away in TBP or standard sized HC where I would have happily waited for an OHC or omni if I'd have known more about how that happens.

I started comics around October 2022 and I can say Amazon is surprisingly good for comics but for older comics and omnibus just search up comic shops with 5 stars and find the closest to you for me when I started I found a comic shop but after going to other I found my perfect one so just keep looking for a shop and trust me you’ll find it quick

If you want to make reading series less difficult for you, and even less expensive. Buy Omnibuses/Compendiums, they’re the best bang for you buck IMO.

So I don´t really want to get into comics , .but there are some individual completed graphic novels that I *really want to* read like : *watchmen , the swamp thing saga , the long holloween , top10 forty niners , the court of owls ,the dark knight returns , v for vendetta* ...maybe invincible ...etc . So I just want to to read them *specifically* like for myself ...& without doing any deepdiving into comics ...so is that fine ?

I was a beginner about a year ago. Unfortunately, comic book stores really turned me off to it all. The employees at multiple shops in my area were all so rude, dismissive, and always unpleasant. I really couldn’t stand walking in to ask for anything, let alone if I could see a certain stack or box. There was literally only one guy who I enjoyed talking to about comics because he was super helpful and informative. Ultimately the rest of the people outweighed him and ruined my experience to where I stopped reading altogether. But I’m back at it now, although in digital form only for the time being.

@@MaddoggComicsI'm new to comics myself. I'm 36 but just started the hobby, I don't know if that's weird or not? I've always read novels , mainly Sci-Fi. At least one book a week for a long time now. But comics are something different. They really can be confusing for a beginner, and the price can be off putting as well sometimes! But still, you have to start somewhere and I'm learning as I go.

Love your video, … , I was just thinking on the Hawkeye comic. I’ve never read a Hawkeye comic before, but I like the character from the movies, and went they say the v series was going to be based on that comic, I pick up and read it and I like it a lot. But, like you say, it was because it was something I was interested. I DO like superhero comics, but my thing it’s more the Ninja Turtles.
I believe the gate keeping in comics is one of the worst things, like, if you do not know a tiny detail of character you got bullied or similar. So, it’s good to see there is people with a positive approach in recommendations and help… you sir, got a new subscriber!

Always good to review the formats and sizes...wait that's not how I meant it...anyway it's normally the reason people see huge price fluctuations for the same content. Only seeing 'Hardcover' can be super misleading when getting started in the hobby if you don't know your OHC, from your Standard from your Omni.
I needed this i dont collect comics i only read graphic novels probably got alittle over 100. I have been in and out of them over the years, but really dont know where to start. Your Daredevil video really helped me because that is someone i am really wanting to get into, and only had the yellow book.

Ik this is almost a year after this video, but I have to say how timeless this video feels.
If there’s one thing I recommend for any newcomers as a newcomer myself: look at reboots.
I’m becoming obsessed with Ultimate Marvel comics, which was sorta designed for newer modern readers. If you want to feel like you’re starting from the beginning, get an intro to characters without years’ worth of relationship drama and baggage, reboots are really good for that, ie Ultimate Marvel. Ultimate X-Men in particular was inspired by the first movie, so if you like the movies, that might be a decent place to start. Not all of it has been perfect, but I feel it gives me something to look forward to when I start really reading mainline Marvel comics.
…or just read Ultimate Spider-Man bc it slaps pretty hard lol.
I've decided to start by wanting the The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1-4 (first since I'm un-DYING to watch TWD on Netflix because I missed 3 seasons that came out and I got to watch S1:E1 only because my parents said "no"; and back then there were only 8 or 7 seasons); the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles compendium volume 1-4; Batman Black and White Volume 1 and 2; and the Alien Vs Predator omnbius series.

As this is 'A Beginner's Guide', IMO, you should have talked just a bit slower (not as slow as 75%, which is available in the settings) but a tinny bit slower than you usually do, with special attention to more important parts, so that people could comprehend and possibly remember the new ideas and information you are presenting here better. Otherwise, the content and the basic idea behind the video was excellent, so keep the good work and keep educating the new members of the community!

Got into comics a year ago and keeping up with the current issues is a breeze for Marvel and DC with their respective comic apps. The issue is when characters I haven’t met yet but are established already show up. Then I do a quick bit of research but I plan on getting a history of the marvel universe book that was updated a few years ago to help with that. Ninja turtles is easy to keep up with. I do have one question though. What’s the difference when people use Vol and run? Like for Iron man 2020 is that whole series a run or Vol? Is Iron Man 2023 then a new run or Vol? Or are those just classed as series?
I may not have understood, but how do you know that youve bought a whole story arch or beginning to end of a sory for a character etc. Also how do you know what story for a character to start with? At the beginning 🤔

Hey man, this helped a comic newcomer heaps! Used to read some graphic novels as a kid now and again, but never had the opportunity to really get into comics. After some reddit-ing I realised that there was a fair bit more to understand than I initially expected. Particularly your breakdown of the acronyms was super helpful, the only ones I had managed to figure out from context were TPB and OHC.
