I remember as a young child seeing the clock start up, I can't tell you the excitement I felt to see something strange and out of the ordinary in what was essentially a high street shopping lane for old people (I thought at the time as a child!) Being forced to go shopping as a kid is just about the most boring thing in the world but I would rush to the square just before the hour to see it go off. I absolutely loved that art piece and it was one of the very few times I was exposed to weird and wonderful art. I remember going back and it was just gone, I hoped and hoped it would come back and it never did. Then years and years later as an adult I was driving to Newport, and there it was... on a roundabout in the middle of nowhere. Newport city center is nice, but it just feels like every other metropolitan area in the UK and art installations like this really can change the perception of the area.
Who needs a clock ? If I come out of a shop I look at my phone. We've taken all the mechanics out of it so o it just tells the time, I think it's the proper time... I HAVEN'T GOT MY MOBILE ON ME SO I CAN'T TELL.... What an utter wanker ! Who gave permission for it to be moved and dismantled ??????
I am not from Newport and I first saw the clock in 1994 with my grandparents who were visiting from Glasgow, it was a great little attraction, and was only pleased to pick up a construction job last year in Newport and now being a 43yr the first thing I wanted to see when I got off the train was this clock, can you imagine my disappointment to find out the thing wasn’t there any more? BRING BACK THE CLOCK NEWPORT
Great video...was thinking of making a movie about the old clock from Newport for my project so started with a UA-cam search and this was my first pick. Don't think I need to anymore this was perfect...Great Job
This is an amazing documentary! But what is a shame is at 14:14 he doesn’t seem to care about the clock at all and talks about looking at his phone which is disappointing. Great film though guys!
Following the release of the new Newport County AFC away shirt that features a design based on this clock, it brought the memories of being a young child staying over my Nan's on a Friday evening and then we'd go to town on the Saturday, and whilst we were there we'd always sit on the benches around the clock with a portion of Vacara's chips in hand waiting for the clock to open 🙂. Initially came onto UA-cam to find a video of it in action to send to a friend from Burslem (Port Vale fan), and then stumbled across this video. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this 🙂. Had no idea about the story regarding Laura, though. I can only imagine how fascinating it would've been to have got her to agree to the conversation.
Thanks Carl, appreciate you taking the time to watch it. Just checked out the new away kit - looks great! 👍🏻 Fascinating how the clock’s legacy lives on to this day
It was a beautiful clock and amazing attraction such a great shame that it’s now in the middle of a roundabout what a waste! I have a funny feeling that in the next 20 years it will be back in the city centre of Newport once again drawing in crowds. Yes it’s true anyone can look at their phone and check out the time but this clock was more than just a time piece it was a piece of entertainment in action! Xx
That clock could never draw people back to the city centre these days, like the good old days sitting in John frost with a bag of chips. Different type of people these days. Shame really

Thanks for watching! For sure, Nathan doesn’t care about the true essence of the clock, he just wants it out of the way 😔

4:45 Those glasses! And don’t blame the clock for disappearing - whenever I’ve been to Newport, I’ve been desperate to get away too.
How wonderful it would be if the clock is back and working in Newport city centre!
amazing video brother , you should make one on the old ABC CINEMA ,we had the biggest screen in Wales and Houdini would visit.
Thank you!!
Wow, really? We’re going to be working on a piece about Houdini later this year actually, so who knows..? 🎩 🪄
Loved this!

high-vis green jacket business man-dude has serious antagonist vibes and I dislike him intently lmao.
He’s not a very nice man 😂
I did too, when he appeared near the beginning
And a good story it was!

Fingers crossed, aye?? 🤞🏻Thanks for watching

No mystery there is a documentary on this and the artist speaks about his work and the reason why he built it what the story is behind the design
The dragon from the garden festival is at Greenmeadow Farm now
Oh really? I might have to check it out. Thanks!
