- If you’re an Indian professional working in the US on an H-1B visa, there’s some worrying news coming your way. A new political battle in the US could endanger thousands of Indian workers and their families, making life even more uncertain. Two Republican senators, John Kennedy and Rick Scott, have introduced a proposal to cancel an important rule that benefits H-1B spouses, green card applicants, and other skilled immigrants. This rule, introduced by President Biden’s administration in December 2023, extended the automatic work permit renewal period from 180 days to 540 days. The goal was simple-to prevent job losses for immigrants stuck in visa backlogs. However, these senators are pushing hard to remove the extension, calling it “insane” and “dangerous”. They claim it allows "illegal immigrants" to work for over a year, even though the rule actually applies to legal, skilled professionals like Indian H-1B visa holders and their spouses.
