My Chemical Romance - Famous Last Words (Guitar Cover)

  • I've been asked a lot, over the years, if I ever listened to modern music in my life, and of course the answer is yes. Although my tastes were defined early on by bands like Def Leppard and Queen, of melodic style rock, I did like the odd band that were popular in my teenage years. At the age of 15 in 2006, there were a lot of guitar bands around but not many that I liked. If you wanted riffs and more technical stuff you had to go a bit heavier and listen, to say, Killswitch Engage (who I did also like). But, if you wanted more 'pop melodic' songs, you had to listen to the 'punk' bands of the time that were popular, like Green Day, but then the guitars weren't as interesting, to me. So when My Chemical Romance came out with Black Parade, it seemed to satisfy my needs right at that moment. I remember my initial impressions were that I thought the bleach blond hair of Gerard Way was cool (something I wanted to do but never did, and now I can't haha) and that they seemed less 'emo' than what I had heard before from them. But it wasn't until hearing this song come on a music channel that I got really floored by them. I love this track so much, it made me buy the album and I used to listen to the ending on repeat. It's got a hell of a chorus hook, plenty of guitar parts and a nice challenging solo. There's a lot of the typical 'octave' style guitar work which was common back then but I don't mind.
So, maybe a little bit different to what I would usually do on here but I hope you can appreciate why I like this song, and maybe there's some out there who like it too.
I use a Jackson DK2 Dinky from 2004 (I removed the tone pot and moved the volume over) into a Boss Me50 (where I get my tone) into a Palmer Pdi-09 (which simulated a mic'd up cab) into a Focusrite Scarlett into my computer running Logic Pro X (where I add a little EQ and Reverb).
    F.A.Q
My headphones are purposely like that so they stay out of the way. The cable is very long.
I'll be uploading my notation notes to my Patreon here / bwm5150 and if you are looking for custom tutorial content, then message me there or at my email bwmguitarlessons@gmail.com . Let me help you get playing the music you love!

Grew up with Def Leppard, Maiden and Metallica but perhaps the only rock band I listened to in the 2000s was MCR. For me, Black Parade was probably the best album since Hysteria. This song is one of my favourites on the album and I've listened to a lot of covers but none ever seem to nail that solo. You have to be the first one I've heard who's done it. That was perfect.

It is beautiful, I love the volume pot has been removed from original location. I never liked the volume knobs, I always hit them while playing.

It's crazy to me that this video hasn't gotten more views. MCR immediately caught my ear in college, when this album dropped, because the guitar work was dynamic - the parts were interesting to play. And of course, the songs were huge and anthemic.

Haha, well most of my subscribers probably aren’t expecting stuff like this and people who like MCR probably don’t like what I usually post 😅

@@bwm5150 Fair enough! I've always been more about the guitar and the arrangement than the genre, so it's all good from my perspective. Your no-frills (but very solid) presentation, lack of filler, and focus on the music make these videos such a breath of fresh air for the times when I just want to watch someone do justice to a great song, with great guitar parts, and learn a bit more in the process.

I know what you mean. A song you like is good no matter the genre. This has always been a personal fav and hits the right buttons I like. You’re very kind. I don’t monetise my videos so I don’t have to worry about doing all the filler stuff 😅

You know this is so cool I've always wanted to say me and you both my friend have the same guitars we both have Jackson guitars accept mines is a different color mines strawberry red with glitter underneath the plastic coding when I brought that guitar I walk in the music store TRYED a couple or so when I picked up mines I knew that's the one I wanted " and cool thing about it was when I Jammed the tune " God's of War by Def Leppard it sounded so good just like their music like Phil Collins guitar then I walked out with it and came home & Jammed for hours on in so keep rocking my Friend and thank you for liking my cover of Hysteria 🎸 🎸

Not my kind of music, but you sound great as always.
By the time these guys came out, I had gone back to listening to mostly 80s music. I'd only just turned 19 in the year 2000, but I never gave music a chance. For me the last decade for great music was the 90s. But the 80s will always rule.🤟

Hey man, you have some really great covers here and I was wondering - what's your approach to learning to play a song? Do you go about it by ear, or look for guitar notes or tabs online, or watch other players' cover videos and live concert videos, or some other method or a combination of these?
Also, have you considered doing covers for INXS? :)
