Steve Albert, one of the Mets announcers on this broadcast, younger brother to Marv and Al Albert and the uncle of announcer Kenny Albert. Definitely runs in the family.
Bob Murphy calling the game for WOR. At the start of this telecast, he gives an announcing clinic, showing how it's done...all by himself. Smooth delivery, outstanding preparation and vocal clarity. Mets fans were blessed to listen to this broadcasting legend from the early 60's through the 80s.
when the Mets won, he'd say "we'll be back with the happy recap, if they lost he omitted "happy". that was just about the only trace of homer-ism he ever exhibited. he was one of the best.
I think he taught at Fordham. In a 1977 Sports Illustrated, he mentioned like in basketball when a player makes a basket. Instead of saying good, you say “that’s 10pts for this player.”
May 1979: The Height of the Dark Ages for the NYM. I recall the Daily News that year ran a Mets vs Roger Maris box on the sports pages to keep tabs on the Mets total home runs as a team to see if they could hit more than 61 home runs combined. I also recall the Mets had a winning streak to end the season to avoid losing 100 games. They lost 99. Those were the days…
It's the period when the average aged ballplayer was my age! But my Giants were terrible in '79, after a flukey surprise year in '78. Have you seen the video of the Phils-Cubs 23-22 game? What a classic, at Wrigley just a couple weeks after this game -- multiple HR days by Schmidt and Kingman in their respective greatest years, plus countless other greats. The ball of the 60s and 70s is the best ever. The pace of play and the quality of players is so much more satisfying than today's.
This is interesting.. 1:51:54 switch-hitter Lee Mazzili steps up batting lefty. Pitcher Griffin throws one pitch and is replaced by lefty Gary Lavelle. Mazilli switches to the right side of the plate and hits a home run.
I can still hear Bob Murphy calling a play back in the early to middle 70s , " hit to the mound coast ... easy does it , Buddy Harrelson scoots over to Kranepool and the Pittsburgh Pirates are retired ... no walks no hits no one left on base and at the end of seven it's the N.Y. Mets 2 and the Pittsburgh Pirates 1 .... some memories seem to always stay with you 👍
2:19:11...Kelvin Chapman had a weird career. He made the Mets opening day roster in 1979, was sent back to the minors and never made it back, until 1984
I met Kelvin before, at the Sports Store he started in his home town of Ukiah during the 90's. My Mom graduated high school with him. Now, he lives back in Ukiah, and I think he is in the winery industry. He missed out on being with the '86 team, which won the World Series. His last big league year was in '85.
@@Demy1970 He had stints with Texas, Yanks, and Bucs before coming back to the Mets! He ended his career with the Jays. The trade to Texas resulted in Ron Darling and Walt Terrell coming to the Mets. The Mets would flip Terrell to the Tigers for Howard Johnson. I have to say, one of the better trades in franchise history.

I most fondly agree 👍
@@sportsrevisited9699 love the way he mentions the San Francisco Giants right fielder ... Jackie Clark 👍

1979....my FAVORITE Baseball season!........anyone else?
Sorry. 1972 is my favorite.

Not if you were a Mets fan. They were absolutely terrible.
@@donwert5039 I hated that year. My Tigers lost in the ALCS to the damn A's.
so your a Pirate fan i guess. '79 is when Munson died.

Thanks for posting - loved watching any game at Candlestick.

Thanks for sharing
I'm pretty sure I was at this game. So nice to see it and thanks for making the effort to post it.
I'm also pretty sure this was May 4 (Friday)
Jack you should check the boxscore provided in description ( it’s 5/5/79 )
Did Bob Murphy take it upon himself to say “Jackie Clark”?
That was his style , me personally I liked it 👍
"Jackie Clark."
He kind of looks like that Kelly Leak character from Bad News Bears whose name is Jackie Earle Haley.
Hit to the mound coast easy does it , Harrelson to Kranepool two away and Chris Spier is retired 😀 ... Loved Bob Murphy's announcing deliverys 👌
Did Murphy not know who Cookie Monster was?????

in 1979 you might have made the Met roster. those lean times.
I was at that opening day game in 1979. Very cold April day at Shea. Mets lost to the Expos in 13 or 14 innings.
Jesse Orosco was on the 79 Mets. He must of been the only Met from that team to make it to the 1986 WS champs.
He was. Ironically he came to the Mets in a trade for Jerry Koosman (who was on the '69 team)
lee mazzilli was on the 79 team and 86 team and played in the series. wally backman was on the 80 team.
Mazilli came back to the Mets in 86 after stints with pirates and blue jays I believe
@@Demy1970 I think he did not go to the Blue Jays until after 1986

4:08, Bob Murphy does not appear to recognize Cookie Monster.
9:55 R.I.P Bill Lucas
The year real grass replaced artificial turf at the ’Stick. And I’m not referring to the kind that was ever present in the bleachers.
That Mary Jane herbal remedy !
At 38:48, I liked the way Montanez caught the ball.
Here today and John Tamargo...
Thanks for your channel! Do you have any 1978 Giants or Pirates?
Just post season for “78
any '78-'79 Pirates.
