About the album:
Aerial Ballet was Nilsson's second album for RCA Victor, and was titled after the highwire circus act of his grandparents. It consists almost entirely of songs written by him, including "One", which later became a Number Five hit for Three Dog Night. The title of the album has been given by Joey Kramer as the inspiration for Aerosmith's name and wings motif.

This song could have been released today and it would be a hit. Timeless.
Not really, these years are more bizarre and kids which are the main source of views like other type of music, if this didnt get many more views from Venom and Baby Reindeer it wouldnt have got them out of nowhere.
I would love to think so, but it did not originally be a hit to begin with, so probably unlikely, especially with how bad current generations music taste is.
Fun facts: the notes at the start and throught the song are meant to be the beeps on the phone when you call someone and you can't get them, it tells you to try again and gives you similar notes.

Great, great song. Many people just know it because of "Lego Batman" and "Venom 2". Others knew the Aimee Mann version in the Oscar-winner film "Magnolia". But most of people, like me, knew the Three Dog Night version that became a rock classic. But this original recording by his creator, Harry Nilsson, is the best of them all. The telephone busy signal inspired Harry to compose the song, and the monotone keyboard part that opens the theme evocates it.
I knew it from the John Farnham version.
Magnólia isn't a Oscar-winner film
@@miguelpontes3203 You're right! Forgive my lapsus. The Oscar-winner was Tom Cruise for his role in that movie.

I recently watched the documentary, ‘who is Harry Nilsson (and why is everybody talking about him)’; I had not realized how incredibly influential and inter-connected he had become in his career. Incredible musician and inspiration. What a legacy!
When the Beatles made their first tour to USA, reporters asked who their favorite American musician was and John Lennon instantly said "Nilsson". Lennon later produced one of Harry Nisson's albums, but sadly, they were both wasted during the recording.
I watched that too! I always knew Nilsson from The Point album he made- a classic!! Then to find out he had all this other incredible music. What a shooting star he was.
The songwriter almost always does it best. This is a perfect example.
Harry also did Newman best. He would do this song best if someone else wrote it. Unmatched singer.
I generally dislike covers as I often find them unimaginative and pale imitations. That being said, I think Aimee Mann's version of One with Jon Brion is a great reinterpretation. Also used brilliantly in PT Anderson's Magnolia.
I like the Aimee Mann version best. Maybe it's because of the movie that I have a special emotional connection with. However an all time great song.
Harry Nilsson was such a prolific songwriter, so many songs in pop culture people have heard are written by him. The quality of his songwriting is insane.
While I might generally agree, there are some things to consider:
- You generally hear the songwriters version first, and that becomes the base version that imprints the first impression of the song in your mind.
- If you know who the writer is, you might tend to think that his/her version is the "correct" one.
So what we need is a blind test with, let's say 100 original versions + covers, and a few 100 people who don't know the songs (or at least don't know who the songwriters are that can listen and judge the different versions!). :)

I’ve never heard Harry’s version of his classic tune Three Dog Night had made famous until now! This has a great 1960’s feel to it-complete with flute, strings and even harpsichord!👌
@norman smithers I don’t know about that but I’m sure The Beatles wished they had written that classic tune! It’s got that unusual whimsical Fab 4 feel to it!😎
@norman smithers I 2nd that! PS-according to Music Choice Harry Nilsson and John Lennon were great friends in the 70’s! MC said they were drinking buddies in Los Angeles back then!!!
@norman smithers It sure does! If my facts are right that song is off the “Pussy Cats” album which was a delayed release because Harry Nilsson blew out his singing voice while recording it!😱😨

Without a doubt a GENIUS! Love his music as much as I did first time age 11 when I heard it riding my bike with my realistic radio and tiny ear bud. Good memories.
Even though I first became familiar with the tdn version, this one is my favorite. It feels more natural with the lyrics and the sad vibe this song has. This version is good for late night vibes and for the after-noon blues.
“Alright Batman, we’ll take it from here.” “Bye Batman!”
This is my third time hearing this song so far all three versions are🔥🥰❤️🤟🏾
Until just now I thought One was written for Three Dog so I had to listen.
This version is very polite compared to the TDN version.

i have been bored my whole life. Amazing I never went into drugs or depression or drinking and could appreciate and admire the world around me, beaches, lakes, cool breeze on a hot day, warm fire on a cold day, occasionally seeing people rejoicing when they learn or experience something new. Now at 63 able to retire with no financial worries and live modestly.. what to do next? I worked as an engineer since 1982. Have lived and worked in 17 states. Completely enjoyed Thailand on 14 trips. Came to greatly appreciate the basic tenants of buddhism, of which I always had known a little bit. What to do, what to do
Man you sound like a blessed man I wish I could reinvent my life now to be similar Hey I could always use a trade skill there's a word for that ( teachers/ sponsers/etc) forgot the word but it's something like a life coach who helps a apprentice in a trade & w/ life in general.
@Daphne Crawford You're 10 yrs old???
Gooddd song
Congratulations, I guess. Not becoming addicted to drugs is always good. But then so is experimenting and taking some risks in life. It really depends on who you are and what you want out of this short existence we humans have here on this planet.
There is no "one size fits all" answer to what to do with one's life. Or what to do with the rest of the life you do have.
Boredom can be good. Although, usually that's after an over excited youth spent taking risks and getting in and out of jams.
I would also differentiate between risks worth taking and dangerous, life ending- pointless risks. There's a big difference between smoking pot and shooting heroin. The difference is in your personality.
i like how this really serious and sad song is best known for it's use in two really comedic superhero movies that also spawned some legendary memes (LEGO Batman and Venom: LTBC)
Song really sounds cool and chill.
Came here all the way from Venom : Carnage trailer.
This completely outclasses the Three Dog Night cover, though that version does have its charm.

F.B.I oh ok my bad
I know this song from depression
Yup and the summer breakup you can’t forget
I know this song from watching a solo performer on Streamate.
What about "I Said Goodbye to Me" from the same album.
When I was depressed I actually made a playlist of sorrowful songs that I listened on repeat while doing nothing else, and included this song. I don't know why I did this. for some reason it felt so much easier to feel like shit and hate myself than to go get groceries or eat. Thinking back on it makes me cringe because I still vividly remember how terrible it was. it almost felt like operating at a level lower than human. I think this song captures the experience of being completely isolated and alone, while also potentially wanting absolutely nothing to do with another human being. Another song I liked at the time was Space Oddity by David Bowie, I think for similar reasons.
My heart is with anyone feeling this way right now. It's probably hard to believe in the moment, but it's important to know that emotions are not set realities. The way you feel is distorted and filtered. Please try to force yourself to do something healthy for yourself.
And depression knows this song from me
Nilsson was such a wonderful songwriter
That last part feels so real I got goosebumps.
Love this song

Astounding.
Three Dog Night's version of this was a huge hit.
And Harry's biggest hit is a Badfinger tune.

I find it hard to believe this came out in the mid-to-late 1960s. This sounds more like something you would hear in the 2010s.
Ah, such was the genius of Harry Nilsson.
He's probs would have been more famous not for the whole never performing live.
Because Harry was a genius and had a gift for writing, playing piano as well as a timeless quality.
Defined the 1970's.

"lets call it even"
I find it fascinating and kinda cool that Harry Nilsson wrote this song listening to the busy signal beeps when he tried to call a friend and it failed! I grew up first on the version popularized by Three Dog Night so it's nice to listen to the original and learn how it came about!
Everyone is soon worried about "where they heard it" so I guess "I brought me here." Thank you Harry, for this song and rest in peace.
Baby Reindeer took me here, this song is also familiar from Magnolia as performed by Aimee Mann and I guess Three Dog Night released the original version.

I love that the lyric of "two can be as bad as one" can apply to both Venom and Eddie *and* Venom and Carnage.
Nilsson was a song writing phenomenon back in the late 60s'. I was a child and used to watch his musical cartoon 'The Point' once every year. Couldn't wait for it to come around again the next year for almost a decade, I think. Music still holds up today with it's catchy tunes and philosophical musings.
Became good friends with the Beatles, especially john and Ringo. Partied hard. Partied too hard. Ringo got sober, Nilsson didn't make it. RIP.
Not true - Harry did go thru rehab and stop the nonsense.
