To be honest the final result is more a woodland than a grassland, but the birch shield bug doesn’t seem to care.

what do you use as substrate?

I typically just gather soil from outside near where I’ve sourced the plants. It’s easier than buying substrates and it contains loads of springtails, aphids, etc.
