    Javier God bless you, brother. Your videos have given me so much comfort through many theological questions, I'm an Anglican, and your guests have been a great discovery for me. Keep on the great work!

    Gerhardt's writings on this subject as well as Chemnitz kept me from going to Rome about 20 years ago, and I thank God everyday for that. God bless your channel. Javier, you ought to email Issues Etc and offer to be interviewed for their Reformation Week Wittenberg Trail stories. I believe they can do it over the phone. Just a suggestion. It would be an opportunity for you channel to be promoted to a large audience and could help many people suffering from ecclesial anxiety.

    Johann Georg Hamann remains my favorite Lutheran theologian (and has more to offer protestants than almost any other Lutheran whoever lived) but Gerhard is still amazing and someone all protestants should look to

    Edit: Great Interview! I also fall into the read/watch theology stuff instead of going back to the source lol!

    They are charging me with innovation, and base their charge on my confession of three hypostases, and blame me for asserting one Goodness, one Power, one Godhead. In this they are not wide of the truth, for I do so assert. Their complaint is that their custom does not accept this, and that Scripture does not agree. What is my reply? I do not consider it fair that the custom which obtains among them should be regarded as a law and rule of orthodoxy. If custom is to be taken in proof of what is right, then it is certainly competent for me to put forward on my side the custom which obtains here. If they reject this, we are clearly not bound to follow them. Therefore let God-inspired Scripture decide between us; and on whichever side be found doctrines in harmony with the Word of God, in favor of that side will be cast the vote of truth.[1] Basil the Great, The Letters, Letter 189 (To Eustathius the Physician).

    You need to have Ben Witherington III on. He’s a Methodist New Testament scholar who just wrote a book called Sola Scriptura last year.

    44:30 If we consider a fifth cause, the "instrumental cause," as in the example of a stone statue, the hammer that is used to chip or chisel the stone into a statue, could this be the inspired authors (including apostles & prophets) through whom the revelation is given? Or is this simply the "secondary efficient cause" that was mentioned in 45:30?

    The apostles confirmed the scriptures that jesus was the Messiah as written in their scrolls. The 4 gospels confirmed the prophecies of the prophet's and Moses writings. A complete scroll of Isaiah was found and Isaiah is quoted more in gospel's than any other prophet.

    Protestants forget the church existed 400 years without a bible. All these supposed deviations are just straw men

    • @thewiseandthefoolish
      @thewiseandthefoolish Місяць тому +14

      The church possessed the scriptures as soon as they were received. They were always authoritative those 400 years you’re talking about. What wasn’t clear is what writings weren’t sacred or had apostolic authority. Some were in the fuzzy edges, but it doesn’t mean we don’t have apostolic witness and authority when Protestants appeal to the Bible as the only infallible rule. (It’s possible to have a fallible list of infallible writings.)
      We don’t deny that the church has a role in receiving and interpreting scripture. The church can still be authoritative and not be infallible. In fact, Jesus still held the Pharisees to account to scripture even though they didn’t have an infallible magisterium with an infallible canon list at that time.
      And what supposed deviations are you referring to that you’re calling a straw man?

    If scripture alone is sufficient then why discuss what Luther had to say in its defense? If scripture alone is true scripture itself would be enough to clearly see the truth of that dogma. The video title seems a bit self defeating because it is appealing to an authority figure (Luther) who is not a Biblical writer. If scripture alone is sufficient for salvation why do we refer to any Protestant founders as if they are authoritative? This seems self defeating, what am I missing?

    • @ryandelaune139
      @ryandelaune139 Місяць тому +10

      Buddy, you clearly didn’t pay attention. Luther isn’t even the topic or the writer of the defense in this one 😂 sola Scriptura is also a claim, and a claim must be defended. Just like any Christian will defend the claim that Christ is God. Just because it’s true doesn’t mean people won’t claim it isnt

    Especially the supposed Catholic arguments, as well as what infallibility means.
