Just beginning to explore and confused by research so far - is this hand cranked?

No. This one is in a treadle table and operates by the treadle mechanism.

    Hello
Could you tell me what type of needle you use with your Wilson 8 wheeler?
    greetings

I have a UK hand wind WW8 version in a case, the fly wheel is higher up and is geared to drive the shaft like the top picture on this link I found below
    ismacs.net/wheelerandwilson/wheeler-wilson-number-eight.html
There is a link to a scanned set of instructions that I am sure you must have ?
It includes all the various glass feet.
The instructions mention changing the lower bobbing [R screw], my WW8 is different it has a knurled screw under the cover plate (as per the first diagram in the link below marked "32" )
From what I can see is the bottom tension is more like trapping the bottom thread just under the needle plate while the takeup leaver acts on the upper tension.
    needlebar.org/main/manuals/ww/index.html
I will have to make a replacement front bobbin slide plate like your seems to have done.
I hope someone finds this helpful
