One of my all-time favorites, even if enemies suffer from a severe bullet-sponge syndrome. In many ways it is similar to Wolf 3D, and the human enemies even look like Space Nazis :D I really love the way they've managed to create a feel of location with this limited engine. Episode 3 has lots of natural caves, being underground; Episode 2 has narrow corridors and is mostly metallic, being a space station; Episode 5 has lots of small and cramped rooms, being a moon colony, etc. The episodes have an identity, more or less. I also like that cheesy late-80's/early-90's sci-fi aesthetic. Reminds me of all the cool sci-fi movies I grew up with.
The reason why the bullet sponge enemies are a bigger problem in this game than it is in Wolf-3D is because the enemies don't stagger when you hit them so you have to be a lot more careful when attacking. It doesn't break the game but you have to approach enemies way more cautiously than in that game. Also I agree that they did an amazing job creating a believable environment with such a limited engine.
one of my favourite shooters :D its really hard its really big and the boss is a massive a-hole. plus i love how you can re-visit areas. like u can run floor 2 fast. but come back later to grab ammo and health u left ''stashed'' for later.
Bought this via GOG and tried it for the first time today. I found the DOSBox version borderline unplayable due to the controls but thankfully there's a source port that allows for proper strafing. It's amazing how much more easier, slicker and fun this game gets when you remove the clunk of having to hold down a strafe button, not to mention being able to strafe and turn at the same time. If only there were a weapon cycle feature so I didn't have to keep reaching for the keyboard to switch weapons.
Not trying to sound elitist, but that's how the game was meant to be played. Holding the strafe button and all. Just like Wolf 3D. As usual, "practice makes perfect" ;)
Well, actually, some of the enemies you fight in this game ARE aliens (most notably the green blobs that emerge from green pods), so the title is correct, Pixel ;)
There is actually a way to tell which vending machines sell food and which - drinks. The machine you see at 12:11 sells food. ALWAYS. The other type of machine, the one that has a yellow-ish curved line on the front panel, always sells drinks. There are no exceptions to this rule.
Cool video! I have to raise an eyebrow at the difficulty comments tho. I'm not a gitgud gamer at all and so I left this on the default level 2 difficulty until the last episode where i turned it up to the third. Not only are there hardly any enemies on the 2nd difficulty, you should only be legit dying when facing tough birds like the plasma aliens or maybe you just got backstabbed once or twice and have to reload and go again knowing they're there. I would have to contend that it's fairly misleading to characterize this game as a meat grinder as it's only a little bland because of how low enemy counts actually are and how you can usually just hang back and pick most things because of how long the sightlines are. It's only real flaw is being a near carbon copy of Wolfenstein without much inspiration besides that.
I don't recall it seeming particularly difficult when I played it as a kid, and I was never really good at fps games or anything (no offense to ADG). I always considered it one of my favorite fps games because I liked the futuristic theme ^_^
i was playing this game a lot when i was a kid and it used to scares me as well, those huge monsters that show all of sudden were the worst. but i didn't know the name, which made me not able to guess this episode, too bad.

So many different enemies. Loved that

I definitely think it's an underrated one. I like it more than Wolf-3D in some ways. One of the creators works for id today.

Blake Stone is like... yo dawg I heard you like secrets.

Besides, the game takes place on a different planet than the one Blake lives on, so everyone technically is a space alien to Blake.

I have defeated the first shareware mission before but that's it.
That pistol looks like some japanese plastic gadget sticked right on top of a dog dropping..
This game is awesome.

Loved this game, pretty much an alien version of Wolfenstein 3D.
Do player stats and items carry over between episodes here? Edit: Looks like they don't

Hey Civvie, I found out what a Blakestone is.
I can't wait for him to do Blake Stone lol.
To quote Civvie 11, "What the fuck is a Blake Stone?" XD Still, good review.
