Okay Corey, you totally surprised me with that trimming tool. How smooth and accurate. I can see how valuable it is, especially with trimming up even smaller units. THANK YOU for showing how....you're the best.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’ve been quilting for almost 30 years and still struggle with quarter square triangles. This is my new go to tutorial.
Thank you for being prepared ahead of time of having blocks ready to show, this save us from having to watch you sew. Thank you for the tip with your favorite ruler, I will try and find one. I really like your tutorials.
Great tutorial! I wish i had seen this about a week ago…just finished making 144 quarter square triangles for a quilt and sure wish I had used your method!
This is how I make this unit. I love the squaring tool you are showing. Looks like I need to let the quilt fairy know what I would like as a surprise on National Quilting Day. 🎉😊 Thanks Corey!
I received this ruler for Christmas while in the middle of another project. I put away until I had time to really look at it and figure it out and now after watching the video, I’m excited! The video is very informative and right to the point, thank you!❤
A quilting friend told me about the June Tailor HS/QS triangle ruler quite a few years ago. I too love it and use it to square up my blocks whenever possible. ❤
I watch a lot of quilting tutorials and have never seen that trimming tool or heard mention of it. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I love your videos. You can tell you love what you do. You are a great teacher!
Great video I will put this ruler in my wish list. For now what I use is a square ruler and I use glow tape on it to make a second diagonal line. I also spin the seams at the back to allow them to lay flatter ❤
Thank you for the tutorial. This block always gave me problems and I have avoided it on occasion. I am going to practice your method now, even without the tool. I have learned so much from you in such a short period of time.
It's not as much fun when the blocks don't quite turn out like we'd like them to! Getting our favorite techniques/tools nailed down makes such a difference.
Great tutorial… i use the first 2 tools that U demoed along with rotating mat; then square ruler. Never knew of that particular tool from June T. but i do have her 1/2” to 1” strip ruler along with some of her pressing tools… masterful creator😉👍
Ugh!! Why couldn’t I have seen this sooner?! Halfway done watching and my jaw dropped, LOL. I made an hourglass block using a different method today and when I tell you my points look janky! Def using this method next time, way faster and easier. I’m just gonna subscribe because if these are the gems you are dropping 🎉
Thank you for this tutorial…your teaching skills are excellent! These ‘how to’ videos help both new quilters… and old quilters like me! I can always, always learn some new little tip or trick!
Hi Corey, the 2-square method is also my favorite way and I like to nest the seams (press to one side for the first HSTs and then butt them up against each other for the second HST stitching). I never understand cutting a square into 4 triangles (on the bias) and THEN sewing them once they are unstable instead of sewing first (while they are stabilized by the square shape) and then cutting. I also find this much easier when I want 3 colors on my QST. I can figure out what to cut (1 of each color, 2 of background) without losing track of which triangle goes where to assemble it correctly. The only thing I do differently is at the end, I like to "twirl" the centers, like one might do with a pinwheel block. This makes it flatter in the center than it might be with nested seams bulking up in the middle. Twirling the centers (works on any 4-patch) is something I only learned about a few years ago when I first learned how to use the 2-square method for QSTs. Although I already know how to do it, this might also be a great tutorial video for you to make since your instructions are always so clear :) Thanks for endorsing my favorite QST method!
I had my seams twirled on my QST and completely forgot to show and mention it! It's such a nice way to press those seams. I did share a tutorial on twirling seams in my Moda Block Heads layout pressing video. That layout has so many QST's and it makes such a difference to have a great press.
This video was so good. As always, you gave us lots of good information and tips. I also hopped over to your Etsy store and picked out a couple of new patterns! Woohoo! Happy quilting Corey……………….
Thank you for this great tutorial on the “hourglass” I’m going right now to purchase that ruler! I love any tool that will help with making blocks more easily for newbie like me.
You're so welcome!...That ruler has really helped me with my trimming. It was one of the first specialty rulers I bought many years ago and it has gotten its use.
I need that tool. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I usually look for my square rulers and have used those for trimming and squaring up but I think the tool in this video is a must go out and buy. Thanks for such a helpful tutorial.
Thank you for showing that ruler! I need it in my life for sure! It looks like it would keep the block from moving around and that in itself is always helpful!🤩❤️
I have finally made friends with the 4 single triangles method. I'm happier with my precision in cutting & sewing when I make them one triangle at a time. (Especially when I am fussy cutting!)
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I trimmed HST’s this week. Had some done using another method, then did the rest with this ruler ( which I had bought at some point but must have forgotten how to use!). The increased accuracy in my units using HSTs trimmed with this ruler is very clear. A game changer for me, actually. Thanks again!
You are such a wonderful teacher. You explain everything in detail and so clearly! I am thinking I could use my stripology rulers the same way you use the June Taylor trimmer. Thank you Corey. Btw, am still missing the surprise appearances from Mr Tiggs! 😁
Oh this was a great , and smooth tutorial. I have watched others and they go so fast or way to slow. Thank you Corey. I am going to try this method just after I feed my Doberman's. Again, thank you.
That was the first ruler I bought as a newbie quilter - and I have never used it! 😅 I am going to use it now! Great tutorial and this is going to be my favorite specialty ruler from now on. I have used all the other squaring tools and this is hands down the easiest. Thank you.
I love the efficiency and quality of the square using your technique and the ruler. I have been making these squares by cutting all the fabric and then sewing together again. I get pretty good results, but it's more work and trimming with a ruler one side at a time is not the best. I really appreciate this video so much. Thank you!
Love your fabrics! My favorite rulers are the Studio 180; very helpful to have the 2 intersecting diagonal lines to line up the center point and the diagonal seams at the same time when doing blocks like these.
Thanks for sharing. I have done it both ways. I love perfect slotted trimmer for trimming half and quarter triangles. I will usually do the block as the designer of the quilt specify's. I have not been doing this long enouph to have a favorite. I like them both.
Hi Corey! The two squares method is my favorite way to make an hourglass block! My first quilt ca. 20 years ago was a baby quilt with alternating hourglass and nine-patch blocks. I was taught a version of the method you showed but used a regular quilting ruler to draw a center diagonal line and sewed a 1/4” away on both sides. Later I got a tool similar to the one you showed in the video. About 5-6 years ago, I got a plastic sheet tool that goes on my machine with lines that helps me keep the point of the square lined up to sew the diagonal lines. Also, I was taught to add 1-1/4” to get the size of the square…we only trimmed off the “ears.” However, I’ve noticed that most tutorials include making the block slightly larger and trimming it down. The June Tailor looked interesting! I’m going to look into it. Thanks for the tutorial!
You're welcome!...for half square triangles it's an inch bigger than the finished size and quarter square triangles 1.5" bigger than the finished size. You can go bigger than that if you want to, you would just end up trimming more off.
I don't remember where I came across it, but a while back. I saw a version of a quarter square triangle that involved taking 2 squares that are the size that the unfinished square needs to be, for example, 2.5 Inches sewing up 2 opposite sides, Cutting the square in half diagonally from corner to corner usually from the bottom right to the top left, opening them flipping them over and sewing them back together again.
I love that tool. I might have to try it! I trim HST with the block lock or the clearly perfect slotted trimmer. But I don’t have a hour glass trimming method. Recently I have been trying to buy every square ruler from 1 1/2 to 24 1/2. I’ll have to say it’s getting extremely expensive! I’m not sure what I was thinking!
I usually trim my HSTs with a regular, square ruler. But, I did recently really enjoy using a BlockLoc ruler for them...I've tried those many times over the years and haven't been sold on them. Everyone loves them, and I have one, so I tried it out every now and again...but just never really liked it. But this last time I tried it...just a couple months ago, I really liked it. I might be coming around! =)
I make my QST's the same way and use the Lori Holt Trim it Rulers to square up the blocks. I finally have all sizes from 14.5 down to 2.5. This works great for me and use them also for cutting. 😍 I had not seen the June Taylor Ruler and is very cool to be able to use one Ruler. Thanks for sharing.
I do like using them...the one thing I wish they had is a little bit more grip. There are little grippy dots I could add if I wanted to. But they are nice for marking those lines!
Thank you so much Corey, this was so helpful, I never knew what the cutting formula was for cutting these blocks. You always are great at explaining everything and we can walk away knowing what you have just taught us!!!❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Corey! I love your videos and your fabric lines! I currently am working on a quilt with your Buttercup and Slate fabric. I have a huge stash of Springbrook and Sunwashed waiting in the wings. I saw your Peachy Keen line and I love it as well! I better get busy catching up!!😂
Thank you for the nice tutorial. I use this method as well, my favorite squaring up tool is similar, it is the Creative Grids Stripology rulers. I can’t imagine quilt making without them.
I love these quick little videos that show how to make our cutting life more precise and will be looking into this ruler. On a side note how do you store your rulers? Thanks for all the tips and tricks you share with us! Have a great day❤
Thanks for the tutorial. My favorite trimming tool is the Tucker Trimmer from Studio 180 Designs. I’m not familiar with the one you use, but it looks like a perfect choice.
Thanks for this video! After trying several methods for making these blocks I am now using this technique and fin it so helpful. However I do not have the trimming tool which seems to make this last step easier and more accurate. May have to get one.
You're welcome Sharon! I always like the idea of trying to use what we have before deciding we need anything additional to aid in our piecing. If we can attain great results without a special tool, that's so nice!
I just ordered that same sweatshirt you have on from the person you suggested. I think I am going to love it. Yes, the doberman's are not so little but they are such a great comfort and protection. I am widowed , and needed the safety they afford me. I took them to be professionally trained in obedience and they are wonderful. Only problem is: they will not let me have a cat or another dog. tsk tsk. ( but they are big babies with me )
Thanks for the lesson in making the quarter square triangle! I've not done many but I can see how the 1/4" marking ruler could come in handy. Less bulk than using a ruler which is what I've done and I usually end up knocking something off my work surface in the process! I'll have to find one of those!
This is my favorite method and I often wonder why patterns cut all the pieces then sew back together. Many patterns never show this method. As a beginner I really am thankful the first quilt I made 2 years ago had this method.
I like how you are already prepared and we don’t have to watch a lot of sewing
It makes it faster to film on our end as well. =)
Your tutorials are so easy to understand and you take your time with the explanations. You are a great instructor! Thank you!
I appreciate you saying that...thank you!
Okay Corey, you totally surprised me with that trimming tool. How smooth and accurate. I can see how valuable it is, especially with trimming up even smaller units. THANK YOU for showing how....you're the best.
I love that ruler!...I use it whenever I can. =)
Thank you! Just wonderful! ❤
You are so welcome!
Once again, this is FANTASTIC! Thank you!
Thank you!...you're so welcome!
Just what I needed. Thanks for your easy to understand instruction. That is a talent in itself.
I'm glad you found it helpful!
I have never seen that tool, what an asset to have in your arsenal of tools! Thank you once again for an excellent tutorial!
You're so welcome Susan!...I use this ruler so often!
Thank you for this excellent tip!❤
You are so welcome!
It's easier and faster how you show in this video. Thank you.
You're welcome!
I just love love LOVE your videos. Swear we'd be kitchen table friends if I lived nearby.
We would have so much fun! =)
This would make my life easier. Thank you for this tip
You're welcome!
Thank you. Great instructions!

Wow, Corey, I really like that ruler for cutting those quarter square triangles. Thank you for demonstrating this technique! 😊
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’ve been quilting for almost 30 years and still struggle with quarter square triangles. This is my new go to tutorial.
You are so welcome! It's always so nice to have a technique that works for us!
Hadn’t seen that tool and I will most definitely be ordering one.
I love it!
Thanks Cory
You're welcome!
You always amaze me. Thanks for having such an upbeat personality. ❤
I do enjoy chatting about quilts and fabrics and quilty things. =)
That ruler makes it look so fun. ❤
The ruler streamlines things quite a bit!
Thanks for another great video. Have a wonderful day 😊.
Thank you! You too!
This is my favorite method too! ❤
I really like this method. =)
Thank you for being prepared ahead of time of having blocks ready to show, this save us from having to watch you sew. Thank you for the tip with your favorite ruler, I will try and find one. I really like your tutorials.
You are so welcome!...thank you!
I always learn so much from your tutorials. Thank you for taking the time to share! 😊

This is a wonderful way to make the hourglass block. Thank you
You are so welcome!
Great tutorial! I wish i had seen this about a week ago…just finished making 144 quarter square triangles for a quilt and sure wish I had used your method!
That's a lot of QSTs! =)
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Using that ruler is slick! I use a square ruler and sometimes end up with a less than perfect block.
When I need to trim to a size not on this ruler and need to use a different one, I always find it a little bit harder to be as accurate.
This is how I make this unit. I love the squaring tool you are showing. Looks like I need to let the quilt fairy know what I would like as a surprise on National Quilting Day. 🎉😊 Thanks Corey!
I sure use this ruler a lot!...I think it was the first specialty ruler I purchased and I've used it so much!
I received this ruler for Christmas while in the middle of another project. I put away until I had time to really look at it and figure it out and now after watching the video, I’m excited! The video is very informative and right to the point, thank you!❤
You are so welcome!....I hope you love it as much as I do...it is one of my favorite rulers.
I love the June Tailor ruler. It squares the blocks perfectly. 12:43
Me too!...it really streamlines the trimming. =)
A quilting friend told me about the June Tailor HS/QS triangle ruler quite a few years ago. I too love it and use it to square up my blocks whenever possible. ❤
It's been a favorite of mine for many years as well. =)
This is how I make quarter square triangles also but always guessed one the measurements. Now I know how. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much Marti!...I do really enjoy chatting and sharing about all things quilty. =)
Great video I will put this ruler in my wish list. For now what I use is a square ruler and I use glow tape on it to make a second diagonal line. I also spin the seams at the back to allow them to lay flatter ❤
Thanks so much!...that's a great tip to make that second diagonal line on a standard ruler. =)
@@CorianderQuilts I put the slotted ruler in my husbands Amazon cart 😜
Thank you so so much I made a quilt block that looked terrible now I know how to make a new one that I will like ❤❤❤

Ha!...maybe now you are going to need to use it! =)
Thank you!!!

I’m so glad you posted this video! I think quarter square triangles can be tricky. 😊
I think they can be until you have a good method you like to use.
Thank you for this great tutorial on the “hourglass” I’m going right now to purchase that ruler! I love any tool that will help with making blocks more easily for newbie like me.

I use your method, but trim with the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmer. Thank you again.
It's so nice to have a ruler that you like using!
I have finally made friends with the 4 single triangles method. I'm happier with my precision in cutting & sewing when I make them one triangle at a time. (Especially when I am fussy cutting!)
I know there are others that also prefer cutting the 4 triangles instead of 2 squares. I say whatever works best for you is the way to go!
Love that June Tailor ruler. Have added to my wish list. Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks with us. Your videos always make my day!
I've used my so often!...it's a favorite ruler of mine. =)
I love this way too. Thank you for how to make them any size!

I love this technique for making these blocks.

My favorite tool is the tucker trimmer by studio 180 design. It’s awesome for trimming any block
It's so nice to have a ruler we love!
Thank you so much for this excellent presentation! I am making great use of the June Tailor trimming ruler along with your great tips!
Isn't it a great ruler!
Good morning Mrs. Corey hope your day goes great for you too. Love this way and that cutter at the end is awesome. Thanks for sharing
Good morning!...I wish you a wonderful day as well. =) Our day looks to be full of sunshine...cold sunshine, but sunshine no less!

I am definitely ordering the June Tailor ruler. Thank you for a great, informative video.
I love mine!..it's one of my most used rulers!
I love that ruler, it’s one I use often!
Me too Christi!...it's such a well-used ruler over here. =)
I make mine the same except I don't have that fancy ruler for squaring them up. But now that I know about it...shopping time!
You can certainly square them up without it, but it is easier with! =)
Wow this is a great tip and neat way to trim love the pre cutting you do to save time thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Oh this was a great , and smooth tutorial. I have watched others and they go so fast or way to slow. Thank you Corey. I am going to try this method just after I feed my Doberman's. Again, thank you.

I love the efficiency and quality of the square using your technique and the ruler. I have been making these squares by cutting all the fabric and then sewing together again. I get pretty good results, but it's more work and trimming with a ruler one side at a time is not the best. I really appreciate this video so much. Thank you!
You're so welcome!...if you have a technique you use that gets you good results, that's what is important!
Love your fabrics! My favorite rulers are the Studio 180; very helpful to have the 2 intersecting diagonal lines to line up the center point and the diagonal seams at the same time when doing blocks like these.
I agree!...having the two diagonals marked makes trimming so nice!
I love your technique on the quarter square triangles ❤️
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing. I have done it both ways. I love perfect slotted trimmer for trimming half and quarter triangles. I will usually do the block as the designer of the quilt specify's. I have not been doing this long enouph to have a favorite. I like them both.
It's great to have a number of different ways to approach a unit. Sometimes one method works better than another for whatever reason.
There are so many different ways to make these units. I think I've used/done everything you mentioned in your comment at one point or another!
This is also my favorite way to piece quarter square triangles! Idk why, but sewing individual triangles together seems very daunting.
I agree Amanda!...I've seen others use the individual triangles and they love piecing them that way. But, I really like this 2 square method.
Thank you! I love making them this way but am never sure how much larger I need to cut my squares. Great info!
Now, if I understand the way you are describing, that is a method I haven't seen before!
I just bought that ruler and love, love it!!
It's a favorite of mine!
Love you Corey!
Thanks so much Gail!...have a wonderful day. =) We're off to a sunny (but cold!) start to our day here. =)
Whatever method you use that works great for you is the way to go! =)
I saw you use the Omnigrid marking ruler in an earlier video & I just found a set of 3 over the weekend! Looking forward to trying them out.
I do like using them...the one thing I wish they had is a little bit more grip. There are little grippy dots I could add if I wanted to. But they are nice for marking those lines!
Thanks for that insight. I have some grippy dots that I can use
Great tip! I’m cutting fabric for your Barn Star 5 today, so perfect timing!
Have fun stitching it up!

I love these quick little videos that show how to make our cutting life more precise and will be looking into this ruler. On a side note how do you store your rulers? Thanks for all the tips and tricks you share with us! Have a great day❤
I have one of those slotted ruler holders for some of my smaller rulers. The larger ones, I have standing on end under my cutting table.
Thanks for the tutorial. My favorite trimming tool is the Tucker Trimmer from Studio 180 Designs. I’m not familiar with the one you use, but it looks like a perfect choice.
It's so nice when you have a ruler that you love using!
Only problem is: they will not let me have a cat or another dog. tsk tsk. ( but they are big babies with me )
It's always a Beautiful Day (for quilting or whatever the day might hold!). I can understand why you would really like having them around!
Thanks for the lesson in making the quarter square triangle! I've not done many but I can see how the 1/4" marking ruler could come in handy. Less bulk than using a ruler which is what I've done and I usually end up knocking something off my work surface in the process! I'll have to find one of those!
That little skinny ruler comes in handy!
This is my favorite method and I often wonder why patterns cut all the pieces then sew back together. Many patterns never show this method. As a beginner I really am thankful the first quilt I made 2 years ago had this method.
I've talked to quilters that prefer cutting all of the pieces and sewing them in triangle shape!
