Wiring a switchboard

  • I've wired up this switchboard more or less how I would go about it in real-world situations. I try to fill in the time with useful information, so I hope you find yourself a gem.
    I know I haven't covered everything, but I guess that what the 3 year electrical apprenticeship would be for 🤪
    I always found when I was an apprentice that there was a real lack of videos and online resources to help me. I think that most electricians are visual learners, I know I definitely am. So it's hard when we are expected to do 75% of our training in books. Because if this I've set out to start making a library of training and explanations to help my fellow electrical workers in areas they might be having trouble.
    Remember, this setup was performed in a controlled environment
    by a qualified electrician for learning purposes only. Electricity is dangerous and can kill you. If you are not
    qualified, please do not try this at home, just enjoy the learning experience.

    Although retired I still like to keep up to date with current rules and regulations just for my own benefit and work at home and your videos assit in that function. I particularly like the fact when you terminate your cables you double them back on themselves which greatly reduced the chance of the cable breaking under the screw, particularly single stand wire such as 1 or 1.5 mm. I always taught my apprentices to terminate wires (where possible) in this fashion.

    Hello from Ireland, very similar way we do things here, with some interesting differences aswell, for instance, we don’t put links between the earth and Neutral bar, it’s done by the network operator in the meter cabinet! Also those slimeline mcbs are class, we have Notting like that! Cool seen how things are done in NZ!

      @leekavanagh6898 awesome, yea the slimline mcbs come in soo handy we do order them in especially for ourselves

      It's a mock up, don't do it on a real switchboard, you should know that without me saying 😂

    Best switch board video ever. Where does it say in rules that a wire in switchboard is rated 5 times its current. I would like to know. Thanks very much.

      It’s not exactly 5 times. Check as/nzs 3008 table 7, spaced for current carrying capacity in switchboards.

    Would you be able to make a video on how to wire emergency exit light. Thankyou.

    Regardless of NZ regulations, would one be best using an appropriately rated MCBO for every circuit? Thanks for your Vids bro, great job!

    • @_nztradie
      @_nztradie  8 днів тому +1

      @shahn560 it's definitely easier and can make it quicker for install and also less potential problems with crossed over neutrals ect both have there place but rcbos would be on top I'd say

    The double pole seems like a good idea, but I think it’s too easy to bypass the meter?

      @whatacoolguy4094 yes, but if you want too it's really not hard no matter how you would do it

    Curious about the 5x rating of CCC in the switchboard. Do you have a reference for that? Thanks

    What is the point of having a non-RCD protected circuit when it can be protected by a RCD?

    • @_nztradie
      @_nztradie  16 днів тому

      @IAmThe_RA you can have accidental tripping of an rcd from some bigger appliances, although in the next regulations coming soon you will have to rcd everything so 6 of one half a dozen of the other really 👌

    • @IAmThe_RA
      @IAmThe_RA 16 днів тому

      @_nztradie In the UK they usually only have two RCDs and yet every circuit is RCD protected. Not to mention that RCBOs have been around for some time now.

    • @_nztradie
      @_nztradie  15 днів тому

      @IAmThe_RA yea that used to be nz too but now you are only allowed 3 mcbs pre rcd

    What's the practical way to tighten screws to a particular torque (2.5Nm / 3.0Nm / 3.5Nm) ? Do sparkies all actually carry / use a torque screwdriver?

    • @_nztradie
      @_nztradie  3 місяці тому

      @peterb2339 well we all do but I can't speak for others, you would need one to be able to get to the right torque
