- Here's a live video from the Dream Theater 2022 (May) Tour. It contains the live click track. It's another staple Portnoy drum part off of the Awake album. Playing this is fun and I can see why people always seem to like this song and the drums in it. I try slightly different things each night on every song by accenting different vocal inflections, guitar "jdunks" and slight variations of the drum parts. This one is no exception. I like how the off-16th hat hits feel when the snare plays on the upbeats so it's a little different than how the first solo feels when the HiHat hand follows the accents as it does on the album's verses. Sometimes I play the album's verse hihat part with either my left or right hand. This helps me stay really focused. I also like to motor out double bass 16ths at the end. It's fun. The click is cool because the speaking sample, guitar delays, and other effects settle in the pocket each night. The guys feel very comfortable with that, so I'm happy to do it.

These behind the kit videos are like watching a tradesman work. Great to see how Mike professionally goes about every stroke and beat. This must be invaluable footage for aspiring drummers!
Watching world glass drummers like Mangini makes me want to immediately go sit at my kit and work on things. I'm just a basement basher, I'll never be at his level but these videos do inspire me to be better even if it's just for me.
Very good and powerful drummer, filled with so much good stuff, Mike has to be one of the most fluid drummers on the planet

But often really good drummers that are not only on you tube don't have awfully big following. Sad but true. This kind of talent should surpas majority of drumming video channels. I notice that with Terry Bozzio's channel.
Usually great drummers don't have much time to manage their own channels due to schedule plan, trainings, camps etc ... So they need a good manager to proceed it.
Great that Mike is self-employed manager & drummer at the same time tho.
Now I can see clearly the differences between your interpretation and the interpretation of Portnoy. Really is very enjoyable..!

2yrs later an still under 80k. The guy that recorded that song came back and now got over 100k in 24 of posting the video of the same song.

@@jichola I've listened to it a handful of times as well and thought the same thing. Like you said, the idea was good and we are talking about a band that is certainly capable of tackling a concept album. But I think it was too far of a departure from the qualities that make them sound like they do. It didn't have that special drive to it. I personally love Jordan's shred antics, or his "wankery" as I have heard it put, but even that was hardly present. I mean, Rush sort of had a similar concept on 2112, but they did it in what, 20 minutes?

As a drummer, I'm so used to being the one that counts in a song live that honestly the toughest part for me here would be starting the damn song to the click. I feel like I could never personally be 'ready' for the next song when its dictated by a force out of my control. But I guess that's just another factor that makes Mr Mangini an absolute professional and a total monster behind the kit. He has it completely conquered both physically AND mentally.

Amazing performance as always. Mike a question: why the change in the main drum riff (intro etc) ? I see you using 2 hands on the hi-hat instead of 1. The groove on the record is more similar to a linear groove. Is yours a stylistic or practical choice? tnx
