I remember hearing it when it first came out on WMMS in Cleveland and my mind was blown!! My dad was in his mid-40s, worked in a steel mill in NE Ohio and loved it too; very relatable.
I do enjoy watching Rush reaction videos, particularly to this version of Working Man. It leaves people speechless. They just can't believe what they are seeing and hearing. As a fan, it makes me feel so validated; "Yes. This is why I have enjoyed this band for four decades. And now somebody else understands why."
When Cleveland listeners first heard this song on their radios in 1974, if they missed the introduction they called into the station to ask when the new Zeppelin album was coming out.
3 different instruments doing 3 solos, yet all tied together and making it sound amazing. after 40 years they still crushed it. love this band. Alex was always amazing, funny and in the back ground keeping everyone laughing and their ego's in check. Geddy's vocals were always on point & his bass playing got even more fantastic over the years. The professor? enough said.
My son and I were lucky enough to be at this show. This is a band that in 2011 were in their late 50's early 60's and this was the encore song at the end of a 3 hour long concert. I've seen lots of bands half their age that don't display the energy they did. Was sad when they retired in 2015 but at least they did it while they were still at the top of their game.
I get being pulled-in by them. A former boyfriend of mine is who introduced me to Rush, and though that relationship fell apart spectacularly, I kept my love for this band. *LOL* They really are something else. One of the things that always struck me about their music is they don't seem to have "throw-away" songs. Like, I've listened to other musicians and sometimes on their albums you can kinda tell that a song is just there to fill out the space and they don't put as much thought and care into it as some of their others. But with these guys, maybe not every song is an epic journey like Xanadu or 2112, but they always put full effort into every one. And all of their lyrics mean something. They aren't just out there filling up space. (I also really grew to appreciate good bass work just by listening to their music. Geddy Lee is freaking amazing!) As for more suggestions, they have a LOT of good music, though you've definitely listened to some of it already. But here's a few more: "Limelight", "Marathon", "Time Stand Still" (this one has a drum part that gives me chills every time I hear it), "A Farewell to Kings" (title track of an album that is completely amazing, and which "Xanadu" is from), "Available Light" (my personal favorite of theirs), "Distant Early Warning"
A fun comparison is ti watch the live version of this song, performed live at the Laura Secord school to a stunned audience of teenyboppers, in the dawn of their career before NP joined the band.
This is special for Cleveland, which is where in the mid 1970s Rush was launched into a higher strata of radio play, the band has a special appreciation for Cleveland
Welcome to the Rush fan hood, we've been waiting for you! It's now your mission to spread the gospel. Everyone who loves music meets to know about this band.
Keep in mind they were near 60 years old when this was filmed!!! Yeah, the reggae opening was the kind of thing they do live to have some fun with their tunes!!!
Rush is one of the few bands that sounded immaculate and masterful in studio and even better live. These three guys could put out fuller and richer performances than most symphony orchestras. You will doubtless get around to listening to the studio version of Working Man. When you do, you will be surprised how different it is. But, you'll love it just as much. Welcome to Rush World Tommy, you'll never be quite the same and you'll never look back.
How can you not be a fan? I’ve been a fan since they played at my sisters high school in the early 70’s. But I constantly met, and continue to meet, people who have never heard of them. It’s astonishing.
Thank you for diving into the Rush rabbit-hole. In the wake of Neil's passing, it is a treat for those of us who've followed and supported them for many years to - literally - watch a new fan being created before our eyes. Not only do we get to relive our own experience thru yours but hope springs anew that a new audience is emerging and that their legacy of great music, musicianship and friendship really will continue on. So, thank you, Tommy. It means more to many of us than you know.
This performance leaves most people speechless for a few moments. I did say you'd do yourself an incredible disservice to yourself if you didn't finish off the week with this song. Also, YYZ in Rio, but you got a sense of why I made that comment.
Since some people have suggested listening to the studio version of Working Man it should be noted that Neil Peart was not Rush's original drummer. That honor was held by the late John Rutsey. Rutsey was diabetic and didn't manage his condition well, so Geddy and Alex gently pushed him out of the band before the started touring out of concerns for his health. That was when Neil auditioned and joined the band. So Neil is on all but the first of the band's albums.
Rush have an amazing catalog. There are many hidden gems such as *Cut to the Chase* (studio version), *Dreamline* (live version from Snakes and Arrows tour), *Earthshine* (studio remastered), *Broon's Bane-The Trees* (live version from Exit...Stage Left), *Far Cry* (studio version), *Malignant Narcissism* (studio version), *Ghost of a Chance* (studio version), etc.
Hello from Montreal, Canada. welcome to the Rush world! I was brain washed in 1980. I would get some of their concert videos, get their Lps etc. and enjoy! I would follow the various cover bands out there and support them. I think there is few in your neck of the woods. I like your enthusiasm. Take care
So glad to hear you have become a Rush fan. It somehow validates why I love this band because I respect your views. I was recently at a function with music playing in the background. A Rush song came on and a lady beside be said, “Oh, I hate these guys”. Well, I got so emotional trying to defend them and giving my story as to why I like them. She might as well have insulted a family member. I had to leave. I need help.
I was at the Dublin and Newcastle shows on the UK leg of Time Machine, Newcastle was a brilliant show with the guys on fire, Dublin the only time they ever played in Ireland.
''No need to thank me''. Yes there is. It's a pleasure to view a genuine, intelligent guy who is willing to listen to different sounds and let us follow him on this journey. You instinctively know when someone is good 'company'. Keep sharing!
I so agree with this comment! The best part is watching you fumble for something say after either watching a video or simply listening. I know where your coming from, and you have picked me up as a fan of yours, since you obviously have good taste in music. There's a reason they call Neil the professor!. Check out a song on Moving Pictures caled Vital Signs, and with an ounce of perception you'll get a pound of obscure! One of my favorites, just wish I could your reaction. Thanks for a great night of RUSH!
Watched the live stream and loved it! So much fun to see someone hear, watch, and appreciate the music I have loved for years! RUSH is the soundtrack of my life. Every era of RUSH is great so please don't let the "prog years only" portion of the fan base deter you from their music from the 80's, 90's, and beyond. RUSH was a tight band of world class musicians and when the retired in 2015 I was left with a void, that void has since been filled by a band I just learned about in the last year. That band is Band Maid and I would love to see you check them out sometime. Just don't let the cover of the book fool you! 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥🥁
Thank you for posting the videos from your livestream! I was so disappointed that I missed it & then it got blocked! So again...THANK YOU! Bcuz watching you throughly enjoy these brilliant performances by Rush was everything I thought it would be...and more!! You can just tell when someone is gonna get it...and you dear sir absolutely get it! I enjoy you, your channel & ofcourse, all of us enjoying this amazing trip & their phenomenal live performances! This was truly awesome! Thanks again Tommy! You truly fuckin rock my friend!🤩 Til the next 1☮ Stay safe! 💥💯🖤🎼🤘 RIP Neil Peart
Loved watching your Rush night. Sadly never toured Australia much to my sorrow. Ne Obliviscaris fan. (oldest bloke in the audience hiding just behind the mosh pit)
Great reaction i love this video. You have to react to Leave that thing alone (Time machine tour), Geddy's bass playing is off the charts and Alex's guitar playing is haunting. You also have to see Neil playing his drum solo from Frankfurt.
@NorthernEar - so their first album was pootling along not doing anything much and then a DJ called Donna Halper on rock radio station WMMS in Cleveland put on "Working Man" from it late at night, in part because it was long enough to allow for a toilet break! Cleveland being a blue collar city took the song to their hearts and Rush's career took off. Thenceforth the association between the band, the city and this song especially, became enduring.
You know that feeling--I'm sure you've had it--when your favorite sports team just goes berserk? When everything they do is right, and everything their opponent does is crap? And for whole glorious minutes you can't believe what you're seeing? This is how I felt about watching Rush during this final solo. It was like the boys just said, "Okay, you think we're awesome? Take THIS!"
You have just made my Saturday afternoon with all these reactions. Firstly, these songs are just the epitome of greatness, and secondly it’s just awesome watching someone learn why so many RUSH fans are lifers! Thank you so much!
Welcome to the Rush Army dude!! Love to have you join the pack! They wrote this version just for fun for this tour! This song was their break-through song from the 1st album! And they broke in Cleveland 1st! That’s why their shows there are always so special there! Neil knew how to make this piece his own, tho!! Really enjoyed your journey!! Looking forward to more!!
They ALWAYS do Cleveland special. The best version, imo, is the one from the Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, August, 1974. It was recorded and broadcast on radio station WMMS in Cleveland in August and again in December. The station played a big part in RUSH"s early career. Its also the first recorded Neil Peart drum solo with RUSH. The ABC Recordings were released in 2011 I believe. You'll hear them give a shout out to Donna Halper just before they start playing WORKING MAN. She was the Music Director at WMMS and the woman credited with "Discovering" Rush in America. Rush, Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, Ohio, August 26, 1974 Pre-FM Broadcast Soundboard ua-cam.com/video/CLh4n7c2imo/v-deo.html 01- Stage Announcements 02 - Finding My Way 03 - Best I Can 04 - Need Some Love 05 - In the End 06 - Fancy Dancer 07 - In the Mood 08 - Bad Boy 09 - Here Again 10 - Working Man 11 - Drum Solo 12 - What You're Doing 13 - Garden Road
Being Neil had only been with the band since July, he's mostly covering Rutsey on these songs, although you can hear some changes. BUT the solo' is all Neil. (RIP)
I'm a new sub BECAUSE of Rush. Please do turn your channel into a "Rush Only" channel. There is another channel that is currently going through all their albums from the beginning. Please consider doing this too. Thanks for some great reactions. Your speechless ones are the bomb. Excellent mate.
A very enjoyable set of reactions. I’m looking forward to more Rush from you. The next rabbit hole you have to go down is Yes. Geddy supposedly decided he wanted to play bass after hearing Chris Squire, Yes’ bassist. That should give you some idea of what to expect.
Entertaining as usual, my friend. You can do Rush week every week for the next 6 months and you'll continue to have your brain scrambled. I envy you getting to hear all of these amazing songs for the first time.
I saw the Cleveland Moving Pictures tour and almost every tour since then. This was the last time I saw Rush and they filmed it. What an ending! It hard for me not to get emotional when I watch it.
Working Man was first recorded in 1974. For 40 years they played this song night in and night out. Most of that time, Working Man was their encore song. The original did not include the Reggie beat. As the years went on they would change things up too keep the music fresh.
Yes, but there are 2 interesting things not often mentioned: - In ATWAS they merged Working Man with Finding My Way (playing both songs entirely, but nowadays they play only a few bars of the latter) - This version in Cleveland was not completely improvised. There are unofficial videos of this tour where we can see similar but unpolished versions.
😷Rush is just one of those bands that if you get it, YOU REALLY GET IT-and if you don’t, then you REALLY DON’T. This Working Man live is 9 years AFTER that Rio YYZ spectacle, and they were 49-50yo in 2002 doing the Rio show.🤯🤘🖖✌️🥁🎸🎹🎤
I feel genuinely sad for you that you’ll never see them live other than in videos. I was really lucky to see them 4 times in Glasgow and the final time in 2015 in Toronto for their R40 ‘farewell’ tour. They are truly masters at what they do and Neil’s drumming inspired me to take up sticks some years ago. There are so many other great works of theirs you can experience. Natural Science, Limelight, The Pass, Dreamline, Between the Wheels ... the list goes on. Hope you review more Rush soon!
Hey there! Great job reacting to this amazing band!! Here´s a list of songs I reckon you might enjoy reacting to: 1.- A farewell to Kings. 2.- Kid Gloves. 3.- Between the wheels. 4.- Open secrets. 5.- Turn the page. 6.- Chain lightning. 7.- Available Light. 8.- Ghost of a Chance. 9.- Stick it out. 10.- Cut to the Chase. 11.- Between Sun and moon. 12.- Alien Shore. 13.- Double agent. 14.- The main monkey business. 15.- Caravan. 16.- Clockwork Angels. 17.- Headlong Flight. All the best!!!
ua-cam.com/video/ndjCXG_c9kk/v-deo.html Above is a VERY early live playing of Working Man with John Rutsey - recorded at some middle school in Canada. The solo is still there, but with a lot of extra jamming. Some day I hope to hear a reaction to this early version. That, and the sound check that Rush (Neil and Alex) did with Billy Sheehan.
Just want to say you really made my weekend! Woke up and had 4 great Reactions to watch and by someone who really appreciates how great they are! I have really enjoyed your journey and look forward to hearing some more RUSH in the future!!
Working Man is from their 1st album, they had a different drummer than Neil on that one. Neil joined the band after the first drummer, John Rutsey was dropped due to health problems. You can really see the difference in the lyrics once Neil started writing them. However, the first album showed that both Alex & Geddy were amazingly talented. This performance of Working Man blew me away when I saw it live on the Time Machine tour (not this show, but the one in Hamilton, Ontario).
True that. This clip is absolute proof that they are the masters of the badass breakdown, also see Freewill (Exit Stage Left version) for further proof.
It would be great to hear more reviews on Alex’s guitar playing. Always felt he was one of the most, if not the most, underrated guitarists. Would like your comments on just diverse styles of play, his tone, and his ability to create emotional connections with his guitar all while being noticeably Alex and how that compares to other guitarists.
I would have hoped for "Natural Science", but I'm a whiner. Glad you dug this. Tunes you may want to check out on your own time, though on the channel would be super awesome: Hemispheres - a full half an album piece (as was 2112), Jacob's Ladder - a very expansive and satisfying piece, The Camera Eye - just a lovely piece of art. Also, definitely listen to Natural Science, even if it's on your own. :)
It wouldn’t matter what Shaw you were at they would be that good at every show that’s what makes them so great! Listen to The Garden Live it will be a great change of temple that I think you would really appreciate.
That last rifffff was from Cygnuys X-1. A must. One of the most significant songs in the history of the music. And the second part of Cygnus X-1 (Book 2) is called Hemispheres. You may have read this before in suggestions.
So many more to be blown away by! Cygnus X1/Hemispheres, The Trees, Natural Science, The Necromancer, The Fountain of Lamneth, Leave That Thing Alone, Roll the Bones, Witch Hunt, The Camera Eye, Vital Signs, The Garden... I could keep going until I name every one of their songs! Madrigal (a nod to J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece), By-Tor and the Snow Dog, Here Again, Time Stand Still, OMG THERE'S SO MANY!!! Don't mind the super fan.
Neal wrote a book it's called ghost rider. Heart breaker neal was an amazing writer too he either wrote most of there songs the drummer runs the show .RIP "professor "
Another great story metaphor song with one of Alex's best solos is The Trees. Also from Hemispheres album is Circumstances which has one of the most inventive transition guitar licks ever. Great song too.
What the hell was that? That was Working Man! The song that got them noticed in the U.S. and played on the radio. I still hear it played on Friday afternoons during the rush hour home. :)
I was at show two of three in the ampitheater at Ridgeway, Washington for this tour in 2011, and Alex pretty much hits every note the same, even all the craziet sounds at the peak of the solo probably weren't too far off from each other. I had bought a VIP ticket for the concert, and I was 3-meters from the stage, right in front of Alex. During one of the songs, he even pointed me out in the audience and had me raise both fists up in the air give a big rock & roll yell. I was recovering from a broken back and had my arms wrapped around my ribs to take pressure off my spine, so I stood out in a crowd of lively Rush fans. I probably looked pretty creepy just standing there motionless, hugging myself while staring at him. I was unashamedly starstruck. Plus, I know all the notes Geddy is playing, and I'm locked in with Neil by default, so I was caught up in finally seeing how Alex worked his gear, and got to see all his left hand techniques, etc.. I was mesmerized. :) I'm a bass player since 1983 because of Rush's music, and I've devoted a considerable amount of my life learning to play the majority of their songs up until their last 5 albums where Geddy started to play more Jaco-inspired lines on some of the songs, and that's just way beyond my ability to do anything but appreciate it. :)
Hi Tommy, check out “Rush, best intro ever! “ it’s a live performance with a collage of many older songs ending with The Spirit of Radio. You will not be disappointed! Cheers mate!
since you seem to be hellbent on overdosing on Rush. might I suggest Anthem, Bastille Day, Jacob's Ladder, Natural Science, CygnusX-1 Book one and Book 2, Fountain of Lamneth and The Necromancer; enjoy the Rush Rabbit hole !!!
Working man was from their 1st album "Rush" before Neil Peart joined the band they had their 1st drummer John Rutsey on it that version is non Reggae you may want to also check out that version.
Not bad for men pushing 60 here!
and after playing for 3 hours
This song is the finale of a 3.5 hour show no support act, not bad for a bunch of men in their late 50's
This is where it all began back in the 70’s when a Cleveland DJ discovered this song and played it on the radio....and the rest is history!!!
The great Donna Halper. We Rush fans thank her from the bottom of our little maple leaf hearts.
@@diannebdee And they never forgot her, inviting her to every award show, HOF and any special performance they gave. Classiest Group of all time
I remember hearing it when it first came out on WMMS in Cleveland and my mind was blown!! My dad was in his mid-40s, worked in a steel mill in NE Ohio and loved it too; very relatable.
I've often heard the expression "gobsmacked". I've never actually seen someone get "gobsmacked" until now. Welcome to RUSH.
😂😂
I do enjoy watching Rush reaction videos, particularly to this version of Working Man. It leaves people speechless. They just can't believe what they are seeing and hearing. When Cleveland listeners first heard this song on their radios in 1974, if they missed the introduction they called into the station to ask when the new Zeppelin album was coming out.
Baby Zeppelin
I usually watch this version of "Working Man" once a day... I never tire of it.
Luv it! 😊
That poor guitar! Alex did unspeakable things to it. 😳😄
At the end of a 3 hour concert, right after playing La Villa Strangiato, all at 58/59 years old. Not too bad lol
3 different instruments doing 3 solos, yet all tied together and making it sound amazing. after 40 years they still crushed it. love this band. You really need to see Neal's drum solo - pull up the one in Frankfort.

The “best intro ever” live is another great RUSH.
They're all great... you kidding me?
Is it with the South Park cartoon? (I am the motherfucking Geddy Lee and sing whatever I want")? Another great intro was for the Weapon.
This is special for Cleveland, which is where in the mid 1970s Rush was launched into a higher strata of radio play, the band has a special appreciation for Cleveland

Why did people suggest this version? Guys, he's never heard the song, and you suggest a version with a novelty beginning.
I was just thinking to myself that this version sure hits differently if you’ve heard the original studio version. And it hits much, much better.

Awesome way to end Rush week with maybe their best live performance ever!! Fantastic!!

Absolutely love this channel, I delight in seeing a musician stunned by other musicians
This song and 1970's Cleveland radio and concert audiences really launched this band in the USA.
Working Man was first recorded in 1974. For 40 years they played this song night in and night out. Most of that time, Working Man was their encore song. The original did not include the Reggie beat. As the years went on they would change things up too keep the music fresh.
Yes, but there are 2 interesting things not often mentioned:
- In ATWAS they merged Working Man with Finding My Way (playing both songs entirely, but nowadays they play only a few bars of the latter)
- This version in Cleveland was not completely improvised. There are unofficial videos of this tour where we can see similar but unpolished versions.
Natural science.. entres nous.. jacobs ladder.. trees..... Was at the same tour in Toronto
The Fountain Of Lamneth
😷Rush is just one of those bands that if you get it, YOU REALLY GET IT-and if you don’t, then you REALLY DON’T. This Working Man live is 9 years AFTER that Rio YYZ spectacle, and they were 49-50yo in 2002 doing the Rio show.🤯🤘🖖✌️🥁🎸🎹🎤
Welcome to your lesson in real in your face rock! Masters... loved your reaction, great review, more Rush please!
Look up 'Stunned' in Dictionary. Find ='See NorthernEar reaction to Rush/ Working Man LIVE in Cleveland'.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was at this show (and many other Rush concerts.) Great show!
Damn, those boys can play! Spinetingingly brilliant. Lifeson's guitar sounds emanate such different emotions but more than anything: soul.
If you are not sick of Rush yet then you need to react “Distant Early Warning” when you get a chance. IMO one of Rush’s underrated songs.
Sick of Rush, Blasphemy!! 😂
Blasphemy is right
Hey there! Great job reacting to this amazing band!! Here´s a list of songs I reckon you might enjoy reacting to:
1.- A farewell to Kings.
2.- Kid Gloves.
3.- Between the wheels.
4.- Open secrets.
5.- Turn the page.
6.- Chain lightning.
7.- Available Light.
8.- Ghost of a Chance.
9.- Stick it out.
10.- Cut to the Chase.
11.- Between Sun and moon.
12.- Alien Shore.
13.- Double agent.
14.- The main monkey business.
15.- Caravan.
16.- Clockwork Angels.
17.- Headlong Flight.
All the best!!!
That's how the solo goes. Your mind will be blown so many more times.

Above is a VERY early live playing of Working Man with John Rutsey - recorded at some middle school in Canada. The solo is still there, but with a lot of extra jamming. Some day I hope to hear a reaction to this early version. That, and the sound check that Rush (Neil and Alex) did with Billy Sheehan.
Love these Rush reactions. Cheers and love from eastern Ontario Canada 🍁
I would recommend the Trees 🌳 next
Three hugely underappreciated songs:
1 - The Weapon
2- Leave That Thing Alone
3 - Marathon
Just want to say you really made my weekend! Woke up and had 4 great Reactions to watch and by someone who really appreciates how great they are! I have really enjoyed your journey and look forward to hearing some more RUSH in the future!!
Working Man is from their 1st album, they had a different drummer than Neil on that one. Neil joined the band after the first drummer, John Rutsey was dropped due to health problems. You can really see the difference in the lyrics once Neil started writing them. However, the first album showed that both Alex & Geddy were amazingly talented. This performance of Working Man blew me away when I saw it live on the Time Machine tour (not this show, but the one in Hamilton, Ontario).
not bad for a chap with arthritus in his hands
Absolutely nobody get down like The Boy’s ... and I mean that sh!%
True that. This clip is absolute proof that they are the masters of the badass breakdown, also see Freewill (Exit Stage Left version) for further proof.
@@RogueReplicant Tell It!!!
Never seen or heard a guitarist play like that...geeez!
i love the look on neils face when goes mental playing up far past the frets the usual granite grimace is replaced by.....a knowing ...SMIRK
Geddy said Working Man was his favourite song to play live as it gave them a chance to improvise
You need to hear “Leave that Thing Alone” live version. No return after that. Cheers
"What the hell was that!?" There isn't more sincere reaction than this from someone that understands music listening to Rush for the first time... =)
Alex Lifeson baby......one of the greatest underrated guitarists hands down....
Ok but you should really do Natural Science the next time you want a Rush reaction. It's my favorite of theirs. Awesome stuff my friend!
What the hell was that? That was Working Man! The song that got them noticed in the U.S. and played on the radio. I still hear it played on Friday afternoons during the rush hour home. :)
I was at this show! Awesome
New sub here. Always good to see people discover Rush
Extraordinary musicianship :)
"Show me what you got!"
7:30 in: "I think I forgot to breathe!"
Lol
I'm a bass player since 1983 because of Rush's music, and I've devoted a considerable amount of my life learning to play the majority of their songs up until their last 5 albums where Geddy started to play more Jaco-inspired lines on some of the songs, and that's just way beyond my ability to do anything but appreciate it. :)
Hi Tommy, check out “Rush, best intro ever! “ it’s a live performance with a collage of many older songs ending with The Spirit of Radio. You will not be disappointed! Cheers mate!
Rush is an experience not just musicians to listen to
since you seem to be hellbent on overdosing on Rush. might I suggest Anthem, Bastille Day, Jacob's Ladder, Natural Science, CygnusX-1 Book one and Book 2, Fountain of Lamneth and The Necromancer; enjoy the Rush Rabbit hole !!!
Neil's drum solo in Frankfurt!
To understand "what the hell was that?" you need to listen to how it sounded in the studio in '73.
Working man was from their 1st album "Rush" before Neil Peart joined the band they had their 1st drummer John Rutsey on it that version is non Reggae you may want to also check out that version.
That’s how men in their 60s rock!!!
